I get so irritated...

I just found a video about the Vive on YT. It was a "review/first look" by a couple of guys with a large, mostly young is my guess, following and they had queued for a couple of hours to have a go with the Vive.

I thought "great - a recent review from the UK".

Within a couple of minutes they came out with this blinder:

"The Vive is something you can engage your whole body with, whereas the Rift and GearVR are just head-tracking devices."

Not entirely wrong though, until Touch is released.

Got a link? I'd like to check it out.

They also were comparing the Vive to the DK2. :noexpression:

Yeah, that's annoying. Happens heaps too. People compare the CV1 to the DK2 too. Drives me nuts.

Unfortunately, it seems most of their audience liked this "review". This is the problem at the moment.

I used to go around such videos and post things like "VR is going to be great, whichever headset you buy" - mostly in response to the heavily one-sided videos, but I've given up doing that. Wasting my time, I think.

Why do you care so much, anyway? Why did this upset you?

I dislike disinformation :)

OK - I want to see all VR devices doing really well and I dislike all this separating into 'camps' crap. It's VR, it's supposedly the Next Big Thing - we should be pulling together and enjoying it, not slating one or the other - or trying to influence others in anything but an impartial review or opinion.

Because it wasn't neutral and the usual bandwagon started in the comments (I know YT comment = pinch of salt) - though to be fair to them, they did tell me they will do a similar one for the Rift when they get one.

They don't upset me - they just irritate me.

PS - and I've seen too many good or promising things fail because of such things.

Hey guys

I've just received my Rift Consumer HMD, but I can't for the life of me get it to work with DCS. I've started the game in Other VR mode, enabled the "Detect Oculus Rift" button in options, but I just get a black screen on both the Rift and the secondary monitor.

Any ideas? Am running the latest Oculus Rift software that works with the Consumer version.

Once it's fixed, any chance you get let us know what the resolution and clarity is like with the CV1, are the instruments clear and fully readable and can you spot targets now while using it.

I have the DK2, but sadly while it's great to mess about with, it's no good for fighting with or instrument flying yet. Holding off on the CV1, until I can hear about the visual improvements from a fellow simmer.

Hey Cowboy, check in the DCS Settings, and make sure you have the model size on large instead of default. It will put a black spot where the target is. I've also adjusted the labels for everything, so that the labels are still there, but just a black dot, so I can see them in my DK2. Works pretty well I think.

Did you check the box to allow third party software in the oculus store page settings?

I do the same. While the purists out there will look down their collective noses at the idea, I think it strikes a fair balance.

I got my CV1 today!

I've never used DK1 or 2, just cardboard, opendive, and gear VR. Compared to gear VR the CV1 has a much reduced SDE, and the edge to edge focus is better. There is also very little chromatic aberration vs. gear VR.

However, I find the contrast ratio sometimes appears to be poor; with washed out blacks and grays. Also there are very bright/obvious flares between light and dark areas, but I don't notice them much except for areas like loading screens.

Despite that, in some games like lucky's tail, the saturation, clarity, and brightness are excellent and I have no complaints about the image quality. The advantage of using a PC to pump the pixels vs a mobile device are quite clear when you see some of the effects. :D

Overall, I'm afraid it's not leaps and bounds ahead of the gear VR like I secretly hoped, but it's definitely not terrible by any stretch. Really, all I'm thinking about is how DCS will be with it, since that was my main motivator.

From what I've seen so far, I think that reading the gauges, HUD, or spotting will all be borderline. However, I think the immersion factor will more than make up for it (at least to me), and VFR flying will be no problem. Of course, I can't say for sure until I get to try it. :joystick:

Gauges, HUD and MFDs are already borderline-readable with the DK2 if you know the aircraft, so the CV1 should be doing just fine in that regard

The biggest issue people had so far was performance. It remains to be seen how much the VR patch and ATW are going to improve this

If it wasn't juddery as hell I'd already be combat effective in my DK2 (with labels / impostors)

The single-display setup of the DK2 is also wasting some of the display, so the actual visible resolution / pp-degree is lower

Correct, the 2 Screen system has the Lens, and shrouds to each screen w/ dust seal,

the 1 screen system used screen horizontally w/ gap in the middle.

I had some guy on steam a few weeks back telling me how the Rift was not true VR, I had to explain that he was wrong  really hate it when people just flat out lie about a product!

KLR, great to hear your first impressions (while we wait for our own consumer HMDs and DCS)

Interesting to read your comparison to the GearVR. If it is comparable to the GearVR in center of the eye resolution then I think it will be great in DCS. The immersion you will love. Wait till you see another aircraft in close formation in DCS. It is so much easier to judge distance in VR and it is a bit of a rush to fly close to another jet when it feels like is really there.

Elo001, I think ATW and engine tweaks in DCS might get us close enough. Definitely crossing fingers. I just got Elite Dangerous working with DK2 and OC 1.3 driver. I don't know if ATW is is being used for the DK2 but Frontier have made VR improvements that are noticeable in the DK2.

Krupi, I didn't buy the CV1 but I think you have made a really great choice. I actually think the Rift will be the best HMD for DCS but I decided to get a Vive for my own reasons. I'll still enjoy the Vive in DCS and I won't get upset if people tell me their CV1 has more clarity (I think the CV1 will likely see the dials better in DCS and I'm fine with that).

I think it is OK to differentiate between the different HMDs, I think they will be qualitatively different and I personally won't have any problems talking about those differences. Someone insulting your choice of HMD shouldn't matter. Just be confident in your choices.

UKRifter on YT has been saying that the juddering etc on high-detail scenes is gone with 1.3.

He has a high spec rig, mind. By that, I mean one that is well above the stated requirement.

I don't know what is the point of buying CV1 if you got DK2?

The increase of performanse is not that big at all. Basically you go from 400PPI to 460PPI screen solution for 600$, in EU for 750€.

Upgrade kit with new screen 2560x1440 530PPI cost 250$ and ofer much more gain 1280x1440 resolution per eye. I think this could be better option for DK2 owners than buying new CV1.

This is interesting, not sure how accurate it really is.

I have a 26 and still nothing from Oculus though.

Hmm I'd be concerned since you were one of the earliest and they didn't make their deadline to ship to you in March. I'm 30 and was wondering if they would make April for me. I'm not sweating it though since ED isn't even ready yet like we had thought.
