Grand thanks. I knew alright that it'd be full DCS quality in the end but was curious to see how far along they are in development currently. Seems like things are ticking along nicely.

Hey any of you P-51 Top Gun Pilots go up against The Dora yet?How is The AI Dora to fight against?

I made a few AI vs AI dogfights with the following results:

USvDE|P-51D|Fw-190|

1 v 1|__1__|__0___|

4 v 4|__4__|__0___|

2 v 4|__4__|__1___|

2 v 4|__4__|__1___|

1 v 4|__4__|__0___|

1 v 4|__3__|__1___|

Dora was pretty much getting shut out. Of course it is a WIP, so this might change in the future.

First fight against the 190, I have to say, the AI is much much better compared to the P-51, no more G-immune pilots.

are there really multiple skins for the dora available already?i had a quick glance in the mission editor, and the 190 seems to only have one single skin.

You may have to select Germany to see more skins

Yes David I think you are right there are no multiple skins for 190D showing in the ME GUI on my system either as well there is no folder in Bazar/Liveries for 190D as well,it may be a small bug.Still, got my first 190D kill this afternoon(after several goes that is).

I also like the 190 AI so far. We flew against it a little bit last night. Definitely a different feel from the 51 AI. Pretty cool to see them do a few barrel rolls as you give chase. At first glance it seems much closer to behaving like a human opponent. Itching to fly again and test this theory.

I must say I was expecting more regarding Fw 190 model accuracy. I hope at least the most obvious shape errors will be corrected. Especially considering that in the future the Fw 190 will be a flyable plane, I suppose ED's intention is to try keep a high standard. It really saddens me that the person who built the 3D model, obviously didn't knew which are the most accurate scale drawings available for the plane (I mean drawings really, really close to perfect). I'm sure a lot of the errors would have been avoided.

First I have a humble suggestion to ED, to change the name in the sim from FW-190D9 to Fw 190 D-9. That's how the plane's name was written in any WWII German documents.

The first thing that I would improve on the 3D model is the radiator's forward cowling. Its shape is very obviously inaccurate.

The skins are in mods/aircraft/FW-190D9/Textures/FW-190.zip There are two - One with the default gray underside and one with red.

In fact, there are even backup tail textures called fw-190_01_s.bmp.dds and fw-190_01_red_s.bmp.dds that have the real tail markings (guess what the '_s' stands for! Just remove it and overwrite).

I was actually looking for the textures to to put them in manually because it makes me really uncomfortable when unpleasant realities are tiptoed around or shied away from (also because Accuracy), but they probably figured lots of people were going to do it so just saved us the trouble while still being legally copacetic by making it opt-in.

The problem for game developers is that the swastika (or Hakenkreuz) is forbidden to be displayed in Germany and Austria (and some other countries).

According to the german penal code it is only allowed to display swastika in case of:

"civic information, the defense of unconstitutional efforts, the art or science, research or teaching, reporting on events of current affairs or history or similar purposes".

Computer games don't fit in any of these cases.

We have had unpleasant experiences with this symbol here in Germany.

No wonder, then, that the judiciary is somewhat restrictive here in this matter.

I was just going to comment on that. ED has to be sensitive to the laws and regulations of each country. I would prefer the actual markings as well and it's interesting that they are hidden away in there.

I'm sure someone has looked into the interpretation of research/educational uses and how that relates to simulators. But that did make me wonder.

Yeah, I always thought that had to be pretty exhausting for importers of content in Germany, given how much WWII-themed stuff is out there. I wonder how model airplane kits are treated... And the meetings for localizing "Metal Slug" must have been interesting...

Sort of like how in Japan you're not (or at least weren't) allowed to have the protagonists of your work use nuclear weapons... So of course writers just call them something else, like "reaction weapons."

Given that those tail textures will never be encountered in it as released no matter what you do, but are still there for anyone to find, I figured they were Europe-friendly enough to point out without getting anyone in trouble, like it would be the legal equivalent of you modding it yourself (which technically you are) for your own exclusively private use or something (i.e. not "displayed").

Military model kits of that era are not allowed to display swastika.

The symbol is simply missing in the kit or it is overprinted in black or cut out from the decal sheet.

It's the first thing people will add and release as community skins. A few days after the beta release anybody who wants to fly around with the full historical markings will be able to do so. This really is a non-issue.

Well, adding those symbols to existing textures and releasing it as mod for download shouldn't be forbidden.

Does not change anything.

It does not fit the restrictions of the german penal code.

The symbol is classified as unconstitutional and you would distribute it in this way.

But:

Section 4 of the mentioned § 86 of german civil code says also:

If the guilt is low, the court may waive the punishment under this provision.

Which means that nobody is really getting into trouble if one is sitting at home and is flying virtually a plane with a swastika painted on it's tail.

But it's definitely not allowed to distribute the swastika via a game or sim software.

Or in a model kit.

Finally, Germany is a (fairly) free country...

The judiciary is only slightly sensitive when it comes to anti-constitutional symbols.

And I thought I had crappy summer jobs.

(thanks for all the specific info on this, it's actually rather interesting)
