+1 for using 64bit only (so struggling with 32bit compatibility will have an end)

Hopefully you will do the next big step with EDGE. (DX10, DX11 etc.)

I am afraid you are incorrect.

Windows 8 System Builder OEM DVD 32-Bit

EDIT: I have 3 copies of Win 8-64 and none of them appear to have any ability to install a 32 bit version.

Retail versions do indeed come with installation discs for both versions, has been the same since Vista. OEM however doesn't have the the media, but the licence key is valid for both 32 and 64 but versions. Those who buy OEM software are unlikely to buy 32 bit versions these days anyway.

The only real problem lies with off the shelf systems manufacturers who still install a 32 but OS on their products, as the people who buy such systems are unlikely to even know about 32 vs 64 bit, let alone how to install 64 bit.

Very exciting news :) Let the rampant speculation begin! For my part, having read (very carefully) the wording and structure of the news email, my two penneth is as follows:

Seems like ED want 1.2.4 out soon , and to coincide with the 64bit switchover and the UH-1 "in the next few months". Therefore I recon (hope) that this will all be announced and presented sometime around Q2/Q3-13 - maybe even at Legends (pretty much slap bang in the middle of Q2/3)? OFC I won't complain if its earlier ;)

Next (and God how I hope I am right here), it seems that they may be looking to complete one (or both) of the F/A18c/F15c before the close of this year. My reason for this assumption is the description of wanting "FC3 and continued updates and improvements to DCSW" (let's assume this to tie in with/refer to 1.2.4), followed by F/A18 and F15. This is followed by (not preceded by) "looking further out", the 3rd party modules . Hopefully that implies a release date around Q3/Q4-13 or Q1-14 - maybe with the 3rd parties hot on their heels.

Finally, it seems that ED want Nevada out before the end of this year. Perhaps they may release one (or both) of F/A18/F15 with Nevada as a nice Xmas pressie for us all!

It would make good business sense for ED to be the first to release a high fidelity fast mover. Being first in allows people to grab ED's product and slake their thirst for the high fidelity fast mover that we have been craving for so long. Broadly speaking, people will buy it no matter what it is unless a third party provides a specific release date near to the ED products release. I wouldn't underestimate this 'gold rush' mentality. I for one will buy the first high fidelity multirole that comes out no matter what the aircraft is or who makes it. I may be more inclined to 'shop only for my specific favourites' (Hawk/Typhoon-VEAO*cough*) after I own my first fast air multirole module. I have fallen victim to this 'need for speed' once already with FC3 - a product (no offence to ED) that I would normally not have got if a high fidelity fast moving multirole was already available - own up, I am sure I am not the only one in this position ;)

Of course, the implication would be that the aircraft of choice would be a multirole/swing-role as perhaps not everyone is as interested in a single role fighter (or bomber), where as a multirole/swing-role (F/A-18*cough*) would be all things to all men - unless you want to go Russian, in which case it seems you would have to wait anyway.

Thanks for the update ED - very informative and very exiting - I can't wait!

I was not thinking of the Win 8 Upgrade (which does have both disks), which is the only non-OEM version I have seen for sale (with media included).

You can get the non-upgrade retail version as well, which does have both discs in. But you tend only to find it at specialist computer retailers and online stores.

Everyone seems to sell/buy OEM versions these days, even when they 'technically' shouldn't.

Indeed, although I somewhat doubt it, I quietly hope I'm surprised. Hopefully we'll see EDGE/Nevada before that as well.

People dont realize the EULA Says you cant resell or transfer ownership.. blahdy blahdy blahdy...

People dont Realize they can upgrade from 32-bit to 64-bit legally with the same License Key:

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows7/32-bit-and-64-bit-windows-frequently-asked-questions

If you want to move from a 32-bit version of Windows to a 64-bit version of Windows 7 or vice versa, you'll need to back up your files and choose the Custom option during Windows 7 installation. Then, you'll need to restore your files and reinstall your programs. For more information about performing a custom installation, see Installing and reinstalling Windows 7*.

I Personally would just make a new Install, and transfer Programs and Documents over Manually as the "Backup/Restore" option doesnt always work right.

as for Availability of ISOs, Microsoft Publicly hosts them for people to download who own a Valid License Key,

The English Windows 7 SP1 ISO is 3.1 GB.

They arent that hard to find on MS's site or Windows7Forums (w7Forums), I also think it's the 2nd Link when you google it

Well, EDGE still seems to be far away. Hoping for a release at the end of year doesn't sound too confident. I'm hoping for the best, though.

Well the 32-bit really depends on the hardware to be honest.

However I guess it's time for some people to upgrade to get the best out of the sim.

Going from 32bit to 64bit is not a hardware-issue.

Of course, if you have hardware that does not fully support 64bit processing, you don't profit from 64bit as much, but it won't hold you down either.

I have Win7 64 bit on a 2001 Notebook and it works fine.

@ Topic:

I'm pretty happy with that roadmap - and right now, it's just that. Some steps closer than others, but still a good perspective.

As long as DCS has been created, the release of all the DCS aircraft has been about March, April and May timeframe, or maybe that's just the time I bought them, I'd be surprised to see any DCS (only) aircraft before Q2 2014

I hope i'm wrong! :)

I for one will buy the first high fidelity multirole that comes out no matter what the aircraft is or who makes it.

PS something everyone has overlooked, if EDGE Brings DCS to DX11 Standards, Then XP is OFF the supported list.

SO, all the people that are like "But 64-Bit XP is Crap", it wont matter if the Engine Goes DX11, Just sayin

Can't believe the day has come when ED would let a partner do the 27. :(

Capitaleasim makes strange bedfellows ...

p.s. Ed I while I think DCS is a superb product I do also believe you guys are losing the plot with developments like the P-51 and the Focke Wulf 190. There are many other period sims which do a great job modelling these aircraft. I think once u have a niche you should rather focus your energies on developing that.

True, but when you think about the DCS World the WWII era craft along with the current engine and what is yet to come should offer some new possibilities for better immersion. I for one am looking forward the the Korean and Vietnam era aircraft. It's a broader market for ED and with the creativity of the staff introducing some new features that other developers were not bold enough to approach they could be the new king. I sure hope so!!:)

I couldn't agree more. The important part is the fidelity of the airplane modeled.

The great thing about DCS is the opportunity to learn different aircraft and their systems and then take them into realistic combat scenarios. Modern aircraft are super easy to fly, the real challenge comes in knowing how to employ them in combat.

Older airplanes like the P51 are actually more difficult to fly. A go around or rejected landing in an a10 is a non event. Advance the throttle all the way in a p51 at Vref and I imagine that torque, p-factor, and spiraling slip stream will so grossly overwhelm the rudder that One wouldn't have much to say about it afterwards.. I remember my friend who had 800 hours in P51s saying that you could only use something like 38" of MP, does that sound right?. I think it's great that they added the P51. I bought it, but I'm too busy learning the a10 systems at this point to be distracted by it. That said, I can imagine it will be much more fun to fly and that will be my reward once I am done learning the A10, if that ever happens.

Certainly, there is much more that needs to be done to complete the retro experience, but who wouldn't want P51 and f86 time in their logbooks?
