BBQ Posted April 11, 2013 Posted April 11, 2013 Just now checking in after a much too long hiatus from my all-time favorite flight sim. Very exciting time -- it looks like a lot of different aircraft are in development! I wondered if there was any talk of any of the development groups working on an Apache AH-64 variant? I'd love to try and guide a hellfire down this chimney! :joystick:
seikdel Posted April 11, 2013 Posted April 11, 2013 So true! With sufficient altitude and a proclivity for exceeding the flight envelope, with particular regard to maximum pitch-down, you could manage this with a Vikhr =P Or you could load up a couple of bombs, put yourself in a very precise hover, and then let her rip...
GGTharos Posted April 11, 2013 Posted April 11, 2013 A hellfire can't do what you want to do with it. [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC] Reminder: SAM = Speed Bump :D I used to play flight sims like you, but then I took a slammer to the knee - Yoda
-Mop- Posted April 11, 2013 Posted April 11, 2013 A hellfire can't do what you want to do with it. Of course it could... its called "LoBl" (or is it LoAl)... the missile heads towards the target and shortly before hitting it, it rises in order to hit it from the top...
Griffin Posted April 11, 2013 Posted April 11, 2013 A Hellfire climbs first and then flies towards the target.
GGTharos Posted April 11, 2013 Posted April 11, 2013 Yep. Nor are you going to stick a laser spot inside that chimney with any sort of useful geometry that would have the missile going down the chimney. With a bit of luck, you could hit the inside near the top. [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC] Reminder: SAM = Speed Bump :D I used to play flight sims like you, but then I took a slammer to the knee - Yoda
Griffin Posted April 11, 2013 Posted April 11, 2013 Yeah I was just correcting that point till you could say how it actually hits.

Lock on Before Launch (LOBL) and Lock on After Launch (LOAL) just mean when the seeker head locates the LASER energy, either prior to leaving the rail or as it approaches the terminal phase of flight. What you're talking about is High/Direct/Low trajectories for the missile, which is an additional variable for the missile. Forgive the fact that these are alpha model profiles, the concept is the same. Furia Posted April 11, 2013 Posted April 11, 2013 Yeah, because I though the actual Hellfire range was classified [sIGPIC]http://menorca.infotelecom.es/~raulurbina/ESA/banner_furia.png[/sIGPIC]

Britchot Posted April 11, 2013 Posted April 11, 2013 Could you tell which manual are those images from? The images were pulled from FAS.org and the basic response was gleaned from what I know of Hellfire missile profiles. The response is validated within that page as well. AlphaOneSix Posted April 11, 2013 Posted April 11, 2013 Don't forget that those profiles are "squished". That is, they are not to scale horizontally, so the profiles look much steeper than in reality. Increase the width of the images by roughly 400% for a more true representation of the profile. I don't think the range of the Hellfire is classified anymore, as it's mentioned in several publications that are approved for public release. I will say that the 8km limit is based on the firing platform being only about 50m above the target's elevation...so higher launch elevations can increase range.
HiJack Posted April 11, 2013 Posted April 11, 2013 Isn’t it just to bomb the building and aim close to the chimney platform and it will all come down?

Gunnergolly Posted April 11, 2013 Posted April 11, 2013 Slightly off topic but since we're on the subject of the Hellfire missile I just wanted to ask a question about the missile's capability. I used the mission generator to create a SU-25T missions and I was shot down by a Hellfire missile fired from an Apache. I replayed the same mission again, making sure to make myself a difficult target and the Apache/Hellfire combination had no problem shooting me down I'm I really this unlucky ???..... or is there something wrong here with the DCS Hellfire ???... Griffin Posted April 11, 2013 Posted April 11, 2013 Now you can see why there is no smoke coming out...it is just a concrete rain collector. :D It's not a rain collector, it's a psychological decoy. Instead of bombing the high value factory, every cocky pilot thinks "Could I put a bomb down that chimney? Could I? YES I CAN!" Then the bomb goes down into that decoy masked as a chimney, instead it's a concrete bunker which absorbs the energy and directs the blast up to the sky. It's the perfect decoy for the less developed countries who are against the most trained and cocky Top Gun generation elite pilots with new high precision targeting gizmos. 1
seikdel Posted April 11, 2013 Posted April 11, 2013 You could hover over it and throw your starbucks cup in there... Yes you could, and when I'm rich and famous and I commute to work every day in my surplus Russian Ka-50, that is exactly how I'm going to ditch my empty coffee cup every single morning. Imagine it: hover over the starbucks parking lot at 100m, rappel down using the yet-to-be-modeled sling hook wearing the should-be-modeled cape and goggles, get in line, purchase coffee, then rappel back up. This is how I will commute >=D Should've added the screenshot as well. Brean:: What's the thing people remember about the Gulf War? A bomb falling down a chimney. The truth: I was in the building where we filmed that with a 10-inch model made out of Legos. Stanley Motss:: Is that true? Brean:: Who the hell's to say?

No, the AI gunners just have supernatural targeting abilities with flawless laser designators that lock targets better than any SAM radar, and the idiocy to go after jets.
Soupdragon Posted April 12, 2013 Posted April 12, 2013 You could hover over it and throw your starbucks cup in there... There's a huge chimney in Kakanj (Bosnia) where we used to practice throwing our packed lunches into the top, usually on days when the chimney top was poking out of the top of the clouds.
