Like SkateZilla said it places DCS under big spotlights. Any game getting on Steam suddenly has a whole lot more attention and sales. That's money in ED's pocket and that's more players, faster updates, modules for everyone to enjoy.

Does it really?

So there's this huge untapped pool of hardcore sim fans who've never heard of DCS just ready to purchase DCS modules on Steam. I'd take some convincing that that's the case. I'm a Steam fan btw.

A few months ago DCS A10 and BS weren't being updated anymore via Steam, Steam seemed to be a dirty word as as far as ED were concerned. So what's changed?

No But DCSW on the Free-To-Play section will bring in Flight Sim/Game People regardless.

Steam, you can add a non steam game , which in turn is tracked by steam and that means how many hours DCS users are in the game. So they probably see a rise in user trafic.

I probably wouldn't have been playing DCS World if I didn't find A-10C back in 2011 on Steam. I didn't consider myself a hardcore sim fan (actually I just got my X52 and IL2 for Christmas; saw DCS: A-10C under recommended list) and I was skeptical on the purchase at the time but for half off I took a chance on it. Since then I've purchased every module (a couple twice for friends/family). So steam does work.

It does unless you think people are born flight simmers with a full knowledge of that fact, and everyone that could possibly be interested has already bought every available module that's been produced & that they have an interest in...

If it's on Steam, people that are not flight simmers will see it & maybe try DCS.world

Then they'll be casual flight simmers who maybe get another module, then they'll be hooked - buy all the available modules, sell the car to buy a TM WH, divorce the GF so they can play at all hours of the day & they'll have a reputation power of 1000 :)

Steam is the gateway drug to flight sim addiction :)

Cheers.

I would hope the Steam versions come with CD keys that can be used in non-Steam modules such as how A-10C bought off of Steam works fine in DCS World.

Likewise, it would be nice if every key bought from ED's store could activate on Steam. This offers a few advantages:

1) Easier to gift modules over Steam.

2) Those that don't want to use Steam can easily get gifted or send a gift to someone.

3) Gives us two download sources and the option to see which we like the most.

Well I can't speak for other Steam users and clearly one swallow does not a summer make, but whilst I remembered Lock On in the dim and distant past, I had honestly forgotten about the whole DCS thing (being an occasional IL-2 player) until I saw A10C on Steam a couple of weeks ago.

I've dusted off my X52, grabbed a TrackIR and am really enjoying getting into the meat of the Hog. And yes, I'm playing on 'full real' settings.

Don't underestimate the buying power of 'less than hardcore' simmers, you don't need to live and breathe long acronyms to enjoy DCS. Hell, even getting Flaming Cliffs (even if you have to bundle it with Lock On to satisfy UBI) onto Steam would be a start.

Cheers,

DCS on Steam is really great news, but I'm hoping for one little thing: New interactive training. With all respect, I'm afraid that those low quality videos recorded a few years ago won't make a good impression. Manual is quite extensive, but videos are great tool for novice players to easily familiarize with aircraft and weapon employment. This will get even more importnant when those products will be introduced to mainstream audience.

Should, Since DCSW Modules and DCS A-10C 1.1.1.1 all still use the same DRM.

Agree with you here, things which i also do think about it that casual players dont usually go that deep into the the workings of the sim environment and many i think will be really happy to see what DCS has become that is IF they have the hardware (like me...hehe...DCS runs just beautiful FPS and eyecandy wise) to get a nice experience. Which reminds me...ED...make sure you add a good system requirement and recommended specs for the game. Thinking that putting a "barely keeping the nose above water" spec for the sim will give more potential buyers could turn into a massive complain about FPS etc. and negative rep cause of that. Also if the sim is stable is critical and i think it should be ready for Steam for sure. As you mention about the training videos. There could be made new ones of course by ED, but there could also be referred to others or done arrangements with other good sources for this. Which btw. the ARMA team do. They have hired guys outside of BI to do this There are a few good tutorial guys on DCS out there for sure already.

Some of my defintive favourites for DCS which will learn you what you can't easily learn by the book and are really well thought are:
