ENO Posted September 2, 2013 Posted September 2, 2013 The original VF-84 was known as the Wolf Gang. They flew F4U-1D Corsairs off the USS Bunker Hill. You can't go with the original Jolly Rogers either as that was VF-17 who made themselves famous in the Solomans campaign. Of course the Tomcat and the Corsair are two of my all time favorite aircraft. Well, I believe it was the original of my lifetime but yes historically I suspect you are on the ball. As for the rest of your post... meh. "ENO" Type in anger and you will make the greatest post you will ever regret. "Sweetest's" Military Aviation Art
Vampyre Posted September 2, 2013 Posted September 2, 2013 Well, I believe it was the original of my lifetime but yes historically I suspect you are on the ball. As for the rest of your post... meh. Yeah, history... especially WWII aviation history is kind of my thing. The Final Countdown mission, while interesting, would not get a lot of playtime by me. The reason is that the technology gap is so large that the Japanese scouts would not even get close to the Nimitz to direct the Val's and Kate's to it. The close knit Japanese formations will not even know what was killing them if they did manage to find the Carrier. I'm also sure the Japanese fleet would die very quickly under the onslaught of the A-6E and A-7E's with antiship missiles and GBU's without the strikers even entering the AAA envelope. Though, If you make it, I would fly it... from the USN side only. Truly superior pilots are those that use their superior judgment to avoid those situations where they might have to use their superior skills. If you ever find yourself in a fair fight, your tactics suck! "If at first you don't succeed, Carrier Landings are not for you!"
ENO Posted September 2, 2013 Posted September 2, 2013 Well yeah- I get that part... balance would be an issue and most of the legwork done by AI- with some slots filled with human pilots across a spectrum. Keep in mind I'm talking about broad scope DCS, so air and land combat... So while the Pearl Harbor style scenario plays out in one area, a Stalingrad style scenario could be playing out in another... Old russian equipment versus newer German equipment or versa vice... or choose whatever country you want- the idea is to prove or disprove the fact that technology wins over numbers. You have enough resources to support one side or the other... choose only one and slaughter the opposition but then either lose or play catchup in the other. Choose both and be more evenly matched... Hey don't get me wrong- I'm WAY ahead of myself here but if they don't break the time periods up where you can choose a specific era that automatically makes certain equipment available... then I'd have fun building the scenario. Hopefully by then I'll have figured out not only how to script with some proficiency but hopefully will have learned how to use my walking cane. "ENO" Type in anger and you will make the greatest post you will ever regret. "Sweetest's" Military Aviation Art
Darkmater Posted September 2, 2013 Posted September 2, 2013 +1 keep to the original vision of DCS world, all eras under one world. Sims dedicated to an single ear are sooo old hat.
leafer Posted September 3, 2013 Posted September 3, 2013 (edited) Thanks, Luthier. Hopefully one of these days ED will give us a satellite view to organize units in ME. Breath holding commenced. And anyone knows why September 1st was/is an important date to announce this? Edited September 3, 2013 by leafer ED have been taking my money since 1995. :P

cichlidfan Posted September 3, 2013 Posted September 3, 2013 And anyone knows why September 1st was/is an important date to announce this? This was pointed out as a viable possibility: "On September 1, 1939, at 0448 local time, Germany began its invasion of Poland, starting World War II; the Schleswig-Holstein suddenly opened broadside salvo fire on the Polish garrison held by 182 soldiers and 27 civilian reservists." (Operation Westerplatte) ...or luthier1 just wanted the extra challenge of doing it in the middle of moving. ASUS ROG Maximus VIII Hero, i7-6700K, Noctua NH-D14 Cooler, Crucial 32GB DDR4 2133, Samsung 950 Pro NVMe 256GB, Samsung EVO 250GB & 500GB SSD, 2TB Caviar Black, Zotac GTX 1080 AMP! leafer Posted September 3, 2013 Posted September 3, 2013 That will do it. September 1st is also the day Luthier invaded a mansion in anticipation of great wealth. :D ED have been taking my money since 1995. :P
cichlidfan Posted September 3, 2013 Posted September 3, 2013 "The engine (EDGE) is fully functional. On 5th of September we will release screenshots of the Normandy terrain showing houses, trenches, bunkers, landmarks, cliffs, sea, trees and many other things ..." i do actually consider that as the most exciting news in DCS world of the past 5 years... Nice to know. I knew I should have googlated his posts on the Russian side. IIRC, at one point Matt did say they were shooting for this year for Nevada. cichlidfan Posted September 3, 2013 Posted September 3, 2013 i wonder if well get a dedicated subforum soon? Flagrum Posted September 3, 2013 Posted September 3, 2013 i had the same question, and according to what luthier1 answered to me here (russian speaking dcs forum section): "The engine (EDGE) is fully functional. On 5th of September we will release screenshots of the Normandy terrain showing houses, trenches, bunkers, landmarks, cliffs, sea, trees and many other things ..." i do actually consider that as the most exciting news in DCS world of the past 5 years... i can wait for the rest, but please just get me out of the black sea area asap! :pilotfly: Awesome news! White Owl Posted September 3, 2013 Posted September 3, 2013 i wonder if well get a dedicated subforum soon? I suspect it will almost be a necessity after the 5th. :D At over 900 posts in a single thread, with most all of the useful information buried and scattered across several pages, it looks to me like it's a necessity right now.
Flagrum Posted September 3, 2013 Posted September 3, 2013 Or it could read its in testing right now and not finalized.... but then its just guessing again. Well, yes, but that implies that EDGE is capable of doing it.

Chivas Posted September 3, 2013 Posted September 3, 2013 I'm sure that the DCS WW2, COD, and BOS will all eventually have very good FM's. The best possible, probably not, every decent flight sim I've ever flown has insinuated they were the best, but there are far to many variables, for anyone to know they have it right. Nevermind were flying a chair, planted squarely on the ground.
Cobra847 Posted September 3, 2013 Posted September 3, 2013 (edited) that snippet of information would be a very welcome surprise and would have a big impact on gameplay. It's obvious from EDGE screenshots posted they're using some type of SpeedTree (or Speedtree itself) for tree rendering.
