    • Rarely, since I am much better at flying, target aquisition and engagement

Starting out, so I am using it constantly. Currently I need to use it to lock on targets with TGP and Maverick (maverick TV is unusable for me without active pause).

I can't wait to get a HOTAS WH, but for now I have to use combination Joystick/KB, making it a little tricky to target, maintain level flight and prepare the attack all in real time.

So I'd like to know how often and when people are using it.

Hi,

I can't wait to get a HOTAS WH, but ...

Once you got your HOTAS WH, you will happily be able to set your tick next to 'Never ! What am I a PS3 user?'

I fly without a HOTAS WH. Just my old simple saitek st290. And I've never used the active pause. Set your standards high and in less than a week things become easy with practice.

Active pause is a really nice feature. Very useful for training and practice.

I did use it during acclimatization with the complex wweapons procedures. I can only recommend to quickly switch to real time, especially with the maverick. You'll pick up bad habits real quick.

In MP this gets a big problem.

The trick is to adjust the MAV slew rate when NOT using.TGP. WITH the TGP use auto pilot modes and stand off distance. Prepare your attack!

It takes time and training, but once the steps are second nature, it is a quick and easy workflow...

Well thanks for the input so far. I must say I am quite surprised to see I am the only one still using active pause. That says two things to me, firstly, the game will get "easier" and eventually I won't need it anymore.

Secondly, I still have a LOT to learn and it will take a while yet.

I am going to be looking for some MP action tonight, and hopefully wean myself off the super cheat of Active pausing.

And today I am very reluctant to using active pause ... after I lost my wings once while in active pause. No, no SAM accident. Air speed. I paused while in a dive, lol. The airplane is frozen, but the world keeps spinning around ... i.e. air speed kept going up and up and up :o)

I think it's a very useful feature when learning. You're running in on target and you've got loads to do to get everything ready to drop ordnance.

Once you get the hang of that though (especially if you have a warthog HOTAS ;)) then you don't need it anymore, which is a good feeling in itself....

Used it to ease the learning, back in the beta days.

Now, I've even forgot it exists, so I don't use it for the other modules.

Never used it even when i had my trusty X-45. Id rather call off the attack and circle round again for another pass than use it.

Now i have the WH things are getting better and i dont need to go around as often.

The only time I've used it is at the very beginning of an instant action, so I can set up weapons, etc. which would normally have been done by the time I'd have gotten to that point in a regular mission. I find that instant action tends to put me practically right on top of the first objective, with no time to prepare properly.

Well, after doing some more training missions (to see if I missed anything). Well it looks like changing the slew to 2 option on Mavs make it MUCH easier to slew (with using ground stab when needed).

Add some Joystick curve and deadzone adjustments for Logitech 3d Pro, and tonight, haven't used it yet (other than to listen to some training).

I can actually keep the plane stable and slew to target in much shorter time.

I believe tonight I will quit using it.

i feel that active pause is like training wheels on a bicycle. it is useful for training and getting to know the systems without so much pressure. however, after you have learned this you gotta quit using it. otherwise, you will start to depend on it.

the transition might seem tough but it actually isn't. you will notice that after just a couple of flight you will get used to it. you will also develop new skills. learn to plan your attacks better, develop better situational awareness and learn to recognize danger zones.

the one mistake most a10c learners make is fixating on their mfcd's. this might be a side effect of active pause. once you start playing without it you will start to looking outside your cockpit canopy mmuch more and only scanning your instruments.

Don't slew your Mavericks using their built-in optics unless you absolutely have to, because the Maverick optics are kind of terrible.

1. Set up your shot with the targeting pod.

2. Set the target as your sensor point of interest (TMS up long).

3. Switch your Maverick to sensor of interest.

4. Slave your Maverick to the SPI (china hat forward long).

5. Zoom in your maverick if necessary (china hat forward short).

6. Lock your target (TMS up short).

Suddenly your limiting factor is the sensor range of the Maverick, not the weak magnification or finicky ground stabilization.

I think the only time I used it was in the training missions because they were scripted that way. I don't even know the key combo for active pause.

The A-10 is not exactly a fast plane so normally I have enough time for everything.

But I see how it might be a really cool feature for people who don't have a HOTAS. And of course for training since you don't have an instructor pilot to take over while you are searching for your switches :)

EDIT: @mav topic: Ground stabilize sucks. I always target via targeting pod, I would never take off for a real mission without the TGP. Of course I did it a few flights without TGP just for laughs, to feel somewhat similar to an A-10A, and with a bit of training you can be effective, but the TGP is soooo much better for both finding your targets in the first place and for keeping them in sight and for guiding your weapons.
