GregP Posted December 18, 2013 Author Posted December 18, 2013 Why dump the touch screen though? I'd be holding onto it till I had the GPU power to get helios up and running again. Primarily because my cockpit simply doesn't have room for it anymore. At 27", it's enormous. Just for kicks I did get Helios running on it, and it works fine with the 4K, but takes up too much space. Instead I'm using a tablet with a much smaller Helios profile. Also, selling the touchscreen will hopefully let me recoup some of the cost of the 4K.
Flim Posted December 18, 2013 Posted December 18, 2013 (edited) Looks great, much envy here. I'm gonna have to wait a while but I think the 4K route is more suitable for flight sims than the Rift. Why dump the touch screen though? I'd be holding onto it till I had the GPU power to get helios up and running again. Lol, wait a year and see how many folks will be rifting compared to buying 4k tv's. I'm thinking the rift will be the winner. Edited December 18, 2013 by Flim
otto Posted December 18, 2013 Posted December 18, 2013 looks great. and you do not need more than 30hz to play imho.
GregP Posted December 18, 2013 Author Posted December 18, 2013 Lol, wait a year and see how many folks will be rifting compared to buying 4k tv's. I'm thinking the rift will be the winner. If the Rift actually matches its hype, I'll be one of the first people in line to buy one. It's pretty amazing thinking that monitors as we know them may be obsolete, for gaming at least, within a year or two due to the Rift. But until then, I'm enjoying the giant expanse and detail of 4K.
Scarecrow Posted December 18, 2013 Posted December 18, 2013 Lol, wait a year and see how many folks will be rifting compared to buying 4k tv's. I'm thinking the rift will be the winner. I'm not knocking the Rift, it will be the main gaming display of the next 100 years but the amount of controls used for a Flight sim makes me think that I'd still need to see my peripherals and keyboard. But yeah the Rift is the future no argument there :)
Boberro Posted December 18, 2013 Posted December 18, 2013 I see big FOV - why in DCS games moving head makes picture distorted on the edges? In BMS there is less effect even with quite big FOV. In DCS you have to decrease angles to get no distortions at all, which makes it looking weird. Reminder: Fighter pilots make movies. Bomber pilots make... KaspeR32 Posted January 8, 2014 Posted January 8, 2014 Hey Greg, Vizio just announced their 4K TV's - 50" starting at $999. Maybe they'll even have DP or HDMI 2.0. I was just curious. What do you think would be the minimum would be, in terms of graphic cards, to run 4k at a reasonable frame rate? I have a 7850 right now, I sometimes lag even at 1080p. I noticed you said you were using TWO 7970's. I don't have that kind of budget but do you think a GTX 770 4GB would be sufficient? Thanks Intel i5-2500k @ 4.4GHz w/ H70 liquid cooler, ASRock PRO3-M Z68 Mobo, 32G 1600Mhz Mushkin RAM, EVGA GTX970 4GB , OCZ Agility 3 128g SSD, SanDisk 240g SSD, Win7 64-bit --Twitch: http://www.twitch.tv/livingfood --
GregP Posted January 9, 2014 Author Posted January 9, 2014 CNET is claiming that the Vizio line has HDMI 2.0, although I don't see confirmation of that on Vizio's site. Seems likely though. As for FPS at 4K, depends on the games you're talking about. If DCS, since the engine doesn't currently support Crossfire or SLI, you're limited to utilizing one card. So my dual 7970s are doing nothing for me in DCS. I can say though that with a single 7970, I can generally stay in the 20-45 range at 4K, even with graphics details fairly maxed. The high resolution specifically impacts VRAM usage; the 7970's 3GB is not enough, so I imagine it's probably holding me back, FPS-wise. This is one reason why I'm eager to upgrade to an R9 290 4GB as soon as the quieter, cooler models are available. But as soon as you move away from DCS, the answer changes. VRAM is still critical, but having dual cards becomes almost a necessity, unless you're using something like a 780Ti. As for the 770 4GB, a quick googling tells me that the 770 is roughly equivalent to the R9 280X, which is roughly equivalent to a 7970. So yeah, I would guess that a 4GB 770 is probably good enough to maintain reasonable FPS in DCS at 4K.
KaspeR32 Posted January 9, 2014 Posted January 9, 2014 Thanks for your answer. I usually like to stick with ATI but the prices of the R9 280x cards went up over $100 since they came out. I was reading somewhere that it could be because of the bit coin mining the ATI cards are good with. Anyway all that's left to wait for is the Oculus Rift. Either way I want a card that can handle 4k. =) Thanks again for the response, you seem like a knowledgable guy and I appreciate it. 159th_Falcon Posted January 9, 2014 Posted January 9, 2014 Now that is awesome. Wondering though, Seiki just announced to be making an HDMI calbe that upscales to 4k resolution. Allowing you to run the sim at lower resolution, and thus higher FPS. (or locked at 30 but more stable) Might also solve the vRAM issue holding you back. Guess it still won't run 60Hz though cause the port on the TV is stil the same. http://www.brightsideofnews.com/news/2014/1/6/seiki-launches-%28r%29evolutionary-4k-upscaling-hdmi-cable.aspx [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC] The keeper of all mathematical knowledge and the oracle of flight modeling.:)

docfu Posted February 10, 2014 Posted February 10, 2014 A message to the original poster, thanks for all of the information you provided. While I don't have the resources to go to a 4K tv yet(they are ridiculously expensive in Japan) and also upgrading my video card is just not possible at this time, I did upgrade to a 55" LG @ 1920x1080 resolution. While I am using a spare 20" for the MFD's, the 55" totally changed the game for me. Jets are now at their "correct sizes" when zoomed properly. It no longer feels like I'm looking at a computer screen even though my previous display was a 37" Aquos @ 1280x768. With the LG being 110% larger than the Aquos, even my wife said the difference is crystal clear.
SkateZilla Posted February 14, 2014 Posted February 14, 2014 GregP, still havent found a program to allow me to monitor GPU's In DCS. cichlidfan Posted February 14, 2014 Posted February 14, 2014 (edited) I don't know what GregP is using but doesn't MSI Afterburner do something along those lines? It has been quite a while since I have had it installed but... EDIT: Apparently, it is something different since it seems to be locked to the upper left, or was in 2010 when the manual I have was written. Yeah I have MSI AB, Sapphire TriXXX, and RadeonPRO, none of them work with DCS for some reason ATM. doveman Posted February 14, 2014 Posted February 14, 2014 Yeah I have MSI AB, Sapphire TriXXX, and RadeonPRO, none of them work with DCS for some reason ATM. You need to get the latest MSI AB beta 3.0.0 beta 18 (which comes with Rivatuner Statistics Server (RTSS) v6.0.0 which is the bit that actually shows the OSD), as it was only recently made 64-bit compatible. I use it fine with DCS World now. http://www.guru3d.com/files_details/msi_afterburner_beta_download.html RadeonPro has always been 64-bit compatible though, so you should be able to use it's OSD tab to show some GPU stats. I find that RadeonPro and MSI AB/RTSS tend to conflict with each other though, so either set your DCSW RP profile to "Disable API Monitoring" and "Disable Auto-Detection" or set your DCSW profile in RTSS to "Application Detection Level: None" and the global "Show On-Screen Display: Off".
