Hi guys

Its been a very long time since I touched DCS but I'm back.

I'm running a AMD 5770 at 1920 x 1080 and while framerates are ok I get the feeling the card is not up to the high res especially when there are rockets being used.

I got two choices

GTX660 at $250 AUD

R9 270X at $275

I have used nvidia before and I only play DCS so should I go with the 660 because DCS runs better with nVidia or opt for the R9 which has more juice(if it works in DCS)?????

Many Thanks in advance

Nvidia, for the current "state of the state". From the many FPS threads, NV has the performance advantage. I'm running an AMD HD 7870.

Who knows with EDGE. But nonetheless, if I was living in the now, and wanted to have a card, Today, that gave me the best performance in DCSW, it would be Nvidia....

Ok for those interested I plunked in a GTX660

I ran a lil benchmark to see the improvement vs 5770

1980X1020

i5 3570k (3.4GHz) AMD 5770

Avg 31.898 Min 11 Max 62

@ (4.2GHz)

Avg 32.658 Min 8 Max 61

i5 3570K (3.4GHz) nVidia GTX 660

Avg 57.128 Min 20 Max 64

GTX660 (High settings TAB) HDR normal cockpit shadows etc all on

Avg 50.153 Min 19 Max 63

Should have got a 770 but maybe SLi anotther 660 later on :)

thanks for posting your results. good to see you picked up a quite a few FPS's with the NV.

I'm currently running an HD7870, and have it set to all of the AMD/ATI settings listed in the many graphics threads.

In single player, training missions, I can see around the mid 40's to low 50's. Peaking at 61 FPS, (using a 60hz LCD), and dropping into the low 20's when flying over a target with lots of smoke.

in the Huey, free flight at the airport, I'll see mid 20s to 30's while hovering around. Once I break away from the Airport, it'll start to climb from the mid 30's to the low 40's.

also use this:

- use the timer resolution tool, prior to running the DCS sim (http://www.lucashale.com/timer-resolution/)

- also run Process Lasso & set to gamer settings prior to running the sim as well. (this tool does seem to help with any sort of micro stutter I might have had). http://www.bitsum.com/processlasso/

- and use the Uni Xonar drivers to try and drop further any DPC latency

Can't wait to see what the EDGE will bring. I've played DX11 games with this current GPU, and it rocks....

my rig is an O/C i5 661 to 3.63ghz, 8GB RAM, using only an HDD, no SSD

Thanks heaps for the info and advice much appreciated

I wish you had mentioned those programs before...

I could have tried out the 5770 with those programs.

Might not have neeeded to upgrade lol

I'm extremely pleased with the results. This card is amazingly quiet and gives me playability I have never experienced before in DCS.

:)

Only thing left is getting a SSD drive :)

Hey guys,

I've been looking for a new GPU for quite a long time. I don't like N-Vidia very much.

How about the R9 270X 4GB OC?

I want to run DCS modules in as high settings as possible (especially AA & Textures) in a single monitor @ 1920x1080 60Hz.

Any idea or rumor about what we should expect from EDGE?

PSU: Corsair CX750M Builder Series 750 Watt

Mobo: MSI 870A-G54 (MS-7599)

CPU: AMD Phenom II x6 1055T (2.8 GHz) overclocked to 3.2GHz

Cooler: Scythe Orochi

GPU: Radeon HD5670:thumbdown:

RAM: 2 x Kingston KVR1333d3n9/4G (8GB)

System Drive: Kingston SKC 300S37A 120G

OS: Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit

today green team has the advantage in DCS, advantage to a point that the best red has to offer is barely adequate. Those who test edge are under NDA and will not share anything regarding performance levels. In light of recent news to me it looks like the new gtx970 is the safe ticket, 2.0 might improve things for red side. basing your decision on roomors is bad idea.

So it comes down to :

Need new card right NOW? - green is the answer (which doesn't meet your amd criteria)

Can wait to see if red becomes viable? - then don't get anything now

I think it depends on what you want out of your card. If you are running 1 or 2 screens then a Nvidia 2Gb card is the way to go. If you are looking for something to drive 3 or 4 screens with all the eye candy then a high end 4Gb AMD card is what you want.

Oops, just realized this is a year old thread.

I think a GTX 980 would be at least as good as a high end 4GB AMD card. ;)

I was checking out the reviews the other day and it seem like an awesome card. The $600 price tag is pretty steep for a card that just nudges out the 290x. I didn't see if it could run 4 monitors though, can it?

I won't swear to it but with 3 DP, 1 DVI, and 1 HDMI I was guessing yes.

Just checked the website

NVIDIA Surround™ with up to Four Monitors

Now, you can play your favorite games across four monitors. At 5760 x 1080, the expanded field of view fully engages peripheral vision and provides for the most immersive experience in racing and flight simulators.

Wonder if it can do it in 3D. That would be way cool.

I just did the same thing (checked the site), though, tbh I would be hesitant to run four displays with only 4GB of VRAM.

It works well on my 290 and I have the visuals cranked up, WAY up. I should do a video. I was thinking 6 to 8 GBs for surround3D.

That would work considering the 4th would be Helios or the front instrument panel.

Does Nvidia do passive 3D now? 3 55" 3D TVs would be sweet.

Only that's not true. The 290X is actually closer to (and above) the 970 in the bechmarks/reviews I've seen.

Yes, I know. I'm saying that the 980 doesn't "nudge out" the 290X---it beats it comfortably, to the degree where the card you should be comparing the 290X to is the 970 rather than the 980.

This is true and the reason for my 970 pre-order. NVidia wins this round with a decisively crunching nut-kick at a price that I never thought I'd see NVidia sell for over here in the UK.

After reading up on the performance, I think I'm going to order the 970 also, with the possibility of adding another down the line.

970 is very, very good for the price, compared to what you could get for the same money a week ago.
