Can we get the dust swirl on landing like in the Mi-8?

Recommended Posts

I love the dust effect when landing on ground not covered by concrete. The effect is available from start with the Mi-8, but not with the Huey! It even shows in Multiplayer for any other Hueys , but the player's

Hope this can be added before the final release.

Just the other day I was thinkin the same thing! Would really add a lot of effect to it for sure! An maybe nothing to hard to add in.

I would agree it adds to the feeling of flight and maybe a slight ripple effect in grass would do as well instead of a huge cloud of dust.

The biggest worry with the dust effect is the hit on frame rates. Nobody needs the frame rates to take a big hit right as they are in the most sensitive portion of flight feet above the ground.

Maybe instead of clouds of dust just have small pieces of "debris" that fly into the air randomly, representing blades of grass, trash, weeds, etc etc. The effect would give some feeling of the downwash yet not impede vision nor hit FPS to great effect?

Since the effect is used since blackshark 1 , currently IS implemented in DCS for the Blackshark 2 AND the Mi-8 it shouldn't miraculously hit framerates in the Huey... you did check framehits with the KA-50 and Mi-8 before posting, didn't you? For me there is no noticeable drop in framerate. How is it with the Blackshark or Mi-8 on your rig?

Drop for me.

To be honest I don't care what your FPS hit is, I don't use your rig, that is my point.

Use it if there is no drop for anyone or use it and give the option to turn it off for those of us who put more value on proper flying and less on eye candy.

The point is: it is implemented in the graphics engine since 2008 (BlackShark1) ...they simply forgot to switch it on for the Huey! It is active in Mi-8 and it is not affecting framerates. The effect itself is far more than "eyecandy" dust thrown up in a landing is a common challenge when landing helicopters. They can be as worse as a brownout. If it can be an option, fine with me. If not I would like the Huey to be on par with the Mi-8 or BlackShark. It is weird to have a 6 year old effect missing just by accident...

P.S.: Just to better understand your concerns, did you test the framehit on your rig with the Blackshark or Mi-8, what is the framehit on your PC? Or are you just wild guessing?

Didn't realise this exists!!.

I've seen it on others online but like has been said it's on the Mi-8 (I don't currently fly this module, so reason why I was not aware of it's existence) should be on the Huey too.

One thing I have noticed on the Huey....you can induce a wet start by opening the throttle shut off then going to full throttle and then press the start button!! Take a look in the external view.....neat graphics!! Not sure if you do this online that others can see it though in the same way that you can't see your own dust cloud but others can.

Would the 'dust swirl' also be visible hovering low over water?

As a 'water swirl' that is then...

Yes, but only on the water surface. It does not create a "cloud". Still looking cool!

I personally feel the dust kick up effect can look better...more 3d. Right now...many times it looks like a 2d effect that only happens on the ground..the dust isn't kicked up high enough.

I think the effect is a bit exaggerated in DCS. If you look at heli video when they take off or land on for ex. grass they rarely pick up dust. IMHO this should only be visible if you are near a very dusty area on dry weather. Otherwise it should be a very faint effect.

Agreed, but it still should be implemented for the Huey.

Mi-8 has this feature already, so how hard could it be to do it for the Huey?

If we do get this, and the troop carrying capability that's hinted at as WIP at the end of the cargo lift part of the manual, the Huey is really going to be a special module

Exactly. And so much for the framerate argument... the dust from the huey in front of you has the same effect on framerates, so why not on your own machine? A wild guess, but I'm willing to bet, the actual effect is part of DCS World and just needs to be hooked.
