Time for a few more of mine. Mostly from my last tour in Afghanistan 2007/2008. Hope you like them. Harrier GR.9 on G-CAS standby at Kandahar Airbase, Afghanistan RAF C-130J about to cross the threshold at Kandahar RAF C-130H & J on the RAF Herc pan at Kandahar. US Predator on final at Kandahar. What I think is the best pic I took during the whole tour. An RAF Chinook, carrying a British Army Lynx, Escorted by a British Army WAH-64 with the Kandahar Flight line in the background and airfield in the foreground. It's a bit blurry due to the low light but I think that add to atmosphere. And to finish off, an example of the view out of my bedroom window :D I'll try and upload some more Typhoon pics tomorrow.2 points

Keeps getting better and better! However, there is some information my brain isn't able to process. These Q&As make me think that it's possible that there could be a situation where BS is compatible with both A-10 and FC2.0 but A-10 and FC2.0 aren't compatible with each other. If such situation is possible, how can that be? Common sense says that this isn't possible but in case A-10 won't be compatible with FC2.0, it means that FC2.0 and BS players will be able to fly with each other only for a short period of time until A-10 is released and will "destroy" this compatibility. I figure there would be two possible scenarios. Either ED will have to patch both BS and FC2.0 every time a new patch or future module will be released to retain this compatibility or the compatibility of FC2.0 and DCS series will be dropped as soon as new DCS modules will be released. Could someone with less tired brains explain this to me as mine can't process this "conflict". :huh:1 point

Note on the Refrigerator My Dearest Wife, You will surely understand that I have certain needs that you, being 54 years old, can no longer satisfy. I am very happy with you and I value you as a good wife. Therefore, after reading this letter, I hope that you will not wrongly interpret the fact that I will be spending the evening with my 18 year old secretary at the Comfort Inn Hotel. Please don't be upset----I shall be home before midnight. When the man came home late that night, he found the following letter on the dining room table : My Dear Husband, I received your letter and thank you for your honesty about my being 54 years old. I would like to take this opportunity to remind you that you are also 54 years old. As you know, I am a math teacher at our local College. I would like to inform you that while you read this, I will be at the Hotel Fiesta with Michael, one of my students, who is also the assistant tennis coach. He is young, virile, and like your secretary, is 18 years old. As a successful businessman who has an excellent knowledge of math, you will understand that we are in the same situation, although with one small difference - .......... ............... .................... 18 goes in to 54 a lot more times than 54 goes in to 18! Therefore, I will not be home until sometime tomorrow........1 point

Yup, and there is a reason here: I assume you are volunteering your time and expertise to convert TFCSE into a multithreaded process, and that you will finance the Q/A effort required? They know how big of a job 64-bit conversion is, and they know how big of a job multithreading conversion is. For this reason, they have selected the option that gives the best bang for the buck. Converting a single-thread engine to be multithreaded is not something you do over a weekend - especially not when you are a small independent developer that serves a niche market. So as has been noted many times - ED know very well that multithreading would be awesome. They also know how much it would cost them to do it. They don't necessarily know how many added sales it would give (though they have probably done some research, I dunno since I'm not in the loop on that). I know I might come across as a bit terse there but backseat coders are akin to backseat drivers. ;) Note that DCS stands for "Digital Combat Simulator". :) I agree, but the important point is the question of never dropping below 20 for who? My system gives flawless performance in all missions I've run online and offline unless it encounters a bug - but I can easily design a mission that will make it crawl. Is that a problem in the simulator or me as a mission designer? (I've actually done that once for fun. The amount of perforation I was given by that rediculous amount of Vulcans was interesting...) Also, you should note that the 3GHz processor listed in the recommendation will, in most cases, give you the performance you are asking for. And that's a processor that isn't even on the market anymore. For comparison, here's some relevant bits of the system requirements for HAWX: Minimum System Requirements OS: Windows XP SP 3/Vista SP 1 Processor: Pentium 4 @ 2 GHz/AMD Athlon 2000+ Memory:1 GB on Windows XP/ 2 GB on Windows Vista Video Memory: 128 MB – Shader Model 2.0* Recommended System Requirements Windows XP SP 3/Vista SP 1 Intel Core 2 DUO 6320/AMD Athlon X2 4000+ 1 GB on Windows XP/ 2 GB on Windows Vista Video Memory: 256 MB – Shader Model 3.0* Sound Card: DirectX Compatible Note how that game, which doesn't even bother trying to be a simulator, has no significantly smaller requirements of the processor than DCS. Now consider that DCS performs accurate simulations of airflow across all helicopter surfaces, the electronics, hydraulics, the avionics, laser physics, realistic ballistics and so on and so forth. ED has squeezed all those things into almost the same requirement profile as Ubisoft, with all it's money, did on an arcade shooter. AND they did it on a singlethread. If that says anything, it is that what ED did there was very very impressive. ;)1 point

In vista and win 7, DirectX benefits from being multithreaded , due to its redesign in DX 10. By setting DCS to use more than one core, DX takes advatage of multiple cores. The dual-core boost is from DX10 not DCS. Nate1 point

Ooops, sorry guys i forgot to resize them myself I have been testing my system for the last couple of days trying to find the best config for multi monitor support. My base system is currently running vista64 (soon to be 7), AMD Quad with 8G of RAM. I use it mainly for work but as i love Flight Sims and there just haven't really been any for a while especially Heli. When i happened on Black Shark i decided to see what was possible and not. I have tested the following as far as video hardware : I originally had dual 4850's and an on board 3300, i tried to read through the 22 page thread on multi monitor but couldn't figure it. I finally reached the conclusion (albeit wrong) that the only way to do what i wanted to do was to go out and buy 57xx or 58xx series ATI cards. I had a really hard time finding them first of, so when i did i figured i would pick one 5770 and a 5870 as i was not sure how the frame rate would hold up. I didnt have much luck getting it to work either. I seemed still limited to two monitors (i could not find an active DP to DVI adapter anywhere) However i did find the Wiki in my serches (i dont remeber the authors name but THANK YOU) I got everything working and began testing. I played with many configs both in monitor layout and video card setup. I found the FR was not any better running in eyefinity over spread across two independant displays by the way. Because of the cost of the DP to DVI adapter i would not invest in it as the setup you are looking at is not using eyefinity and sets every monitor as individual display. The FR is low of course because of the resolutions im running 5760x3300. However pumping this form a single card using eyefinity I would think would produce the same FR as gowing over multiple single mointors from what i have experienced. Any who, the skinny from my tests and im happy to run any more tests you would like, im new to the Sim so there may be better ways to test the performance. Of course i would also like any tips for bumping the FR up as with the large res and six screens im down around the 10 to 12 mark :( to give you an idea of the results: Single monitor on the 5870, 1920x1080, 3cameras, FR 40, Dual monitor single group (eyefinity) 5870, 3840x1080, 3cameras, FR 24 Dual monitors no groups 5870, 3840x1080, 3cameras, FR 24 Three monitors singles 2 mon 5870 + 1 mon 5770, 5760x1080 3cameras, FR 15+ six monitors singles 2 mon 5870 + 2 mon 5770 + 2 mon 3300, 5760x3300 3cameras, FR 8 - 12 depends on cockpit zoom I also tried 2 x eyefinity plus two singles and had similar frame rates. Thats easy. FPS benchies (infact some sites do NOTHING but bench FPS's, its hard to find one with SIM's) http://www.anandtech.com/cpuchipsets/showdoc.aspx?i=3641&p=7 Another example: http://www.hardwarecanucks.com/forum/hardware-canucks-reviews/22151-intel-lynnfield-core-i5-750-core-i7-870-processor-review-17.html In the same article, throw in a heavy math CPU app and then: http://www.hardwarecanucks.com/forum/hardware-canucks-reviews/22151-intel-lynnfield-core-i5-750-core-i7-870-processor-review-12.html Look how different they suddenly are. And AMD stays at the bottom of the pack. Everybody knows LOMAC loves raw computing power, FPS's are all about graphics management, thats all theres to it. Thats why AMD stays close to Intel in FPS's benchies in the first 2 links. At the thrid they reveal their true CPU power (or lack of it) and differences accentuate between them. And BTW you cant play without a videocard (at the very least with onboard one) and Im sure if you tried some of the missions online would would see your PC be properly challenged. Its sad I owned 2 AMD systems back then when they were competitive (AMD T-bird and the first AMD 64's) but now they are playing entry level hardware battles with Intel only. Having said that dont feel sorry to have purchased your system. :D ;) You also pay a premium for intel machines.1 point

Flaming Cliffs 2.0 Upgrade FAQ Q: What new features does the Flaming Cliffs 2.0 upgrade add? A: The following features are added: - Runs under DirectX 9C - Improved Mission Editor with trigger system - New terrain area to include much of Georgia. This will be same map as used in DCS: Blacks Shark. As such the Crimea has been replaced with the addition of Georgia. - More detailed terrain to include more ground objects, larger forests, and higher resolution elevation data - Improved clouds - High resolution airfield textures - Improved multiplayer system with embedded game browser - More robust online cheating prevention - New and improved menu system - Numerous new, highly detailed ground units including infantry - More accurate flight data that controls flight performance of player-controlled aircraft. This is true for both Russian and U.S. aircraft. - Improved flight models for all artificial intelligence (AI) controlled aircraft - New, more realistic G-tolerance modeling - Limited 6 DOF cockpits that move up, down and sideways according to maneuvering - Heads Up Dispay (HUD) now modeled as collimated and focused to infinity for all player-controlled aircraft. - New and highly-detailed Su-25 model - Advanced ballistics are implemented for all flyable aircraft, including ricochets of AP rounds - F-15C locked target IFF indication - More realistic ranges, seeker guidance and fuzes for air-to-air missiles - More realistic electronic countermeasure operation and performance - New and improved sound engine - New radio message voice-overs - Random AI look-down clutter notch variable according to skill level - Adjusted chaff rejection - Can start inside aircraft shelters now - New turbulence model for all player-controlled aircraft that automatically generates turbulence effects at three wind band altitudes accounting for wind speed and direction - New wind ground surface effects for player-controlled aircraft with the "Advanced Flight Model" (Su-25 and Su-25T) that reduces wind speeds near the ground surface Q: Will my Flaming Cliffs 1.12 missions work with Flaming Cliffs 2.0? A: Due to a change in the world location and mission editor, they will not. However, when installing the upgrade you have the option to create both Flaming Cliffs 1.12 and Flaming Cliffs 2.0 parallel installs. Flaming Cliffs 1.12 and the upgraded Flaming Cliffs 2.0 will not be online compatible. Q: Will Flaming Cliffs 2.0 and DCS: Black Shark be online compatible? A: Yes! You will now be able to fly head-to-head and cooperatively with players flying the Ka-50. Q: Is a player flyable Ka-50 included in Flaming Cliffs 2.0? A: No. To fly the Ka-50 you must own DCS: Black Shark. However, AI-controlled Ka-50 helicopters are included in Flaming Cliffs 2.0. Q: What mission content will be included in Flaming Cliffs 2.0? A: Each aircraft will have several new single missions and four new campaigns will be included, two for the Su-25 and one for the A-10A and F-15C. Q: Will new documents be provided? A: Yes. A new Flaming Cliffs manual will be provided as well as a new Install Guide. Q: Will 3rd party modifications created for Flaming Cliffs 1.12 work in Flaming Cliffs 2.0? A: Yes, in most cases. However, some minor modifications made need to be made for 3rd party-created aircraft. Q: What operating systems will be supported? A: Windows XP, Windows Vista and Windows 7. Q: What copy protection will be used? A: StarForce online activation (only) will be used. Based on the success of DCS: Black Shark protection, we feel this provides the best compromise of user-friendliness and protection of property. Unlike the reported hardware problems reported with an earlier version of StarForce applied to the original Flaming Cliffs, no such issues have been reported with the current online activation method that does not install any drivers to the user’s computer. Q: When will Flaming Cliffs 2.0 be available? A: We plan to make the upgrade available for download from the Eagle Dynamics website in early 2010. http://lockon.co.uk/ Q: How much will this upgrade cost? A: $29.99 USD Q: Will Flaming Cliffs 2.0 use the same "engine" as Black Shark? A: It would be more accurate to say that both Flaming Cliffs 2.0 and Black Shark use the same generation of The Fighter Collection Simulation Engine (TFCSE). This was done not only to improve the Flaming Cliffs series in many key areas, but to also allow multi-player compatibility between the two brand series. Given this, they share many things in common, including: • Map and airbases • Multiplayer and network code (sorry, no dedicated server yet) • Log Book • Encyclopedia • AI units and AI actions • Track file system • Options • Mission Editor • Campaign Editor • Modding openness • World lighting and shadowing • TripleHead2Go support • Force feedback implementation • Monitor resolution support Q: What are the system specifications for Flaming Cliffs 2.0? A: The same as for Black Shark. For most users, the game will run faster than Flaming Cliffs 1.12 due to TFCSE optimizations. Minimum system requirements: Windows XP, Vista or 7; CPU P4 2 GHz; RAM 2 GB; video card 256 MB RAM, compatible with DirectX 9; 5 GB HDD space; sound card; keyboard and mouse. Recommended system requirements: Windows XP, Vista or 7, CPU Intel Core 2 Duo or AMD X2; RAM 3 GB; video card with 512 MB RAM (ATI Radeon HD4850+ or nVidia GF8800+), compatible with DirectX 9; 5 GB of HDD space; sound card; keyboard and mouse; and joystick. Q: If I install the Flaming Cliffs 2.0 upgrade to an existing copy of Flaming Cliffs, will I still need the original Flaming Cliffs CD to launch it and still go through activation? A: No, only the Flaming Cliffs 2.0 protection system would be used. Q: Will the upcoming DCS: A-10C Warthog be online compatible with Flaming Cliffs 2.0? A: We do not know yet as DCS: A-10C Warthog is still in development. Q: Can I port Flaming Cliffs missions into Flaming Cliffs 2.0? A: No, due to significant changes in the map and Mission Editor. Q: Will a combined package of Lock On and Flaming Cliffs 2.0 be released? A: This is possible and something that is under investigation with Ubisoft (owners of intellectual property rights of Lock On). Q: Will it be possible to build missions in both Black Shark and Flaming Cliffs FC 2.0 and use them interchangeably? A: For the most part yes, but some mission modification would probably be needed due to a different set of flyable aircraft. Q: Will all Flaming Cliffs 2.0 flyable aircraft now have the Advance Flight Model (AFM) system? A: The Su-25 and Su-25T most certainly will and will have some performance tweaks. The other aircraft will have the Standard Flight Model (SFM) but will see more realistic performance in regards to such items as climb rates, acceleration, and top speeds. Q: What if I do not have a copy of Flaming Cliffs to upgrade to Flaming Cliffs 2.0? A: Likely in the Spring of 2010 we will release Flaming Cliffs 2.0 of DVD. This version will be a complete Flaming Cliffs 2.0 install but will still require Lock On to be first installed. You can purchase Lock On at: http://www.kengray.co.uk/lockonbuy.htm Q: What about including 3rd party models, textures, etc.? A: While 3rd party developers are certainly free to add these to Flaming Cliffs 2.0 after release, they will not be integrated due to past issues attempting to use 3rd party content and legal issues. Q: Will the released terrain tools be compatible with Flaming Cliffs 2.0? A: Yes. Q: Will Black Shark and Flaming Cliffs 2.0 be run from the same executable? A: No, they are two separate programs. They only link together in regards to online compatibility. Q: Has the performance of air-to-air missiles been improved? A: Yes in regards to range, speed, fuze ranges, and counter-counter measure effectiveness. This includes both Russian, American, French, etc. missiles across the board. This is true for Active Radar Homing (ARH), Semi Active Radar Homing (SARH) and Infrared (IR) guided missiles for all sides. Additionally, to be more realistic, the R-27T/TE must be seeker locked before launch and have very limited "mad-dog" capability... just as the real systems. In a related manner, ECM burn-through ranges have been moved significantly out (based on aircraft type) and a 15 second ECM warm-up time has been added to address ECM blinking online. Q: What are the payment options for Flaming Cliffs 2.0? A: Most major credit cards will be accepted through: http://lockon.co.uk/index.php?end_pos=1322&scr=shop&lang=en&cat_sid=0 Q: Will the Flaming Cliffs 2.0 aircraft receive the same level of detail regarding navigation systems, lights, and radios as the Ka-50 in DCS: Black Shark? A: No, that level of detail is reserved for the DCS series. Except for when indicted in this FAQ, Flaming Cliffs 2.0 aircraft will be as they are in Flaming Cliffs. Q: Why are the Flaming Cliffs 2.0 limited 6 DOF and not full 6 DOF? A: Unlike the Ka-50 cockpit in DCS: Black Shark, the Flaming Cliffs 2.0 cockpits are not full 3D in every aspect that allows unlimited 6 DOF movement around the cockpit. Yaw, pitch, and Z-axis are as they were in Flaming Cliffs, but X, Y, and roll are limited. Q: Will the training tracks be updated? A: Yes. Q: Where will the boxed version of Flaming Cliffs 2.0 be available? A: Outside of TFC website (http://www.kengray.co.uk/lockonbuy.htm), that has yet to be determined. Q: If there are future Black Shark patches, will Flaming Cliffs 2.0 still be online compatible? A: We will make every effort to retain this compatibility. Q: What will be the activation limits for Flaming Cliffs 2.0? A: 8 activations and 10 deactivations. Note that just reinstalling the game does NOT use an activation! An activation or deactivation is only used when there is a significant hardware or OS change. Even if the user has exhausted all of their activations and deactivations, more are provided with proof of purchase. If in the unfortunate circumstance Eagle Dynamics were to go out of business, our intent would be to release a final patch to remove copy protection. Q: What would be the Flaming Cliffs 2 upgrade paths? A: FC2 can be installed over any installation of Lock On, with or without Flaming Cliffs. FC2 is a separate install and does not overwrite your previous game(s). So, your options are either Lock On + Flaming Cliffs unofficial add-on (you would not have to activate) + Flaming Cliffs 2.0 upgrade or simply Lock On + Flaming Cliffs 2.0. In some cases, it may be a good idea to fully uninstall your previous game (back up whatever you need first), reboot the PC and perform a clean installation of Lock On prior to installing FC2. Q: Is it true that bird ingestion has been added? A: Yes, but it can be set on or off with .LUA setting. Q: Will multi-player aerial refueling be supported in Flaming Cliffs 2.0? A: Yes, but with some limitations. 1) Player being the host of a multi-player mission and won't have any problem refueling from the tanker. Also, the player will be able to see the positioning lights (KC-10A), baskets (IL-78 ) and will be able to hear radio communication with the tanker. 2) Player connecting to a server will be able to air refuel with a few differences. -KC-10A limitation: No radio communication, no positioning lights -IL-78M limitation: No radio communication 3) Important note for air refueling with the F-15C, A-10A and "weather" options. Missions creator, if you're planning to add a tanker (KC-10A) to your multi-player missions, you will need to take in consideration the wind settings (Ground, 2000m, 8000m) under the "weather" tab options. Adding wind will prevent the client aircraft from connecting normally to the tanker as the autopilot will overcompensate for the wind and will make the air refueling impossible. You need to have wind set at 0 m/s at the altitude you're placing the tanker unit. 4) External tanks won't be refueled, only the internal tanks will be.1 point
