I thought I would release the beta version of my airfield diagrams for DCSW as the charts are at the point where I need to print a copy and then work my way through the airfields to get the rest of the detail right. The radio frequencies, elevations, directions and measurements should be accurate with the mission editor the F10 view and the A10C's internal MAGVAR. I'll do the release as a separate thread to the design discussion to avoid the release getting lost in that thread. I'm working through tower placement and taxiway labelling in addition to points of interest however a lot of the Russian airfields dont have the taxiways labelled which complicates the matter, I'm thinking it may be worth waiting until the DCS release prior to revisiting this. I've also added references to the ADF's from the BS manual and if the interest is there I will release a Russian air force version with Metric measurements once the maps are finished. If anyone picks a bug or has some reference notes for the airfields let me know. UPDATE: Updated airfield name plus some error corrections For those of you printing this, I recommend printing in color to A5 directly, as the map lines blend better in color then gray-scale, however you can print 2 per page on A4/letter Airfield Diagrams.pdf2 points

Ahh the piety of purists :-) I know I'm not actually going to persuade anyone here - we're all sitting comfortably in our various camps, but to me I guess it all depends on what you want to be real - if you want it to look real, then labels destroy that. If you want to find target with something approaching the ease / difficulty that would occur in real life, then some kind of minimal label just makes up for the deficiencies of the hardware we're all stuck with. On the day that you get a monitor that gives you 160 degree FOV but still lets you find a plane on the runway at 3km as quickly as you woud with the naked eye, then labels will be cheating. Till then, they add to the reality of the operation, at the same time as they detract from the immersiveness of the image on the screen.2 points

A full ILS approach can be a complex. It starts at the initial approach fix (IAF) and follows a procedure to fly to the final approach fix (FAF) and down to the missed approach point (MAP.) The in-game ATC will give you a vector (direction, distance) when you call inbound. This vector is to a point that is along the extended runway center line several miles out and an altitude of "pattern altitude" which I think is in the 2,000-3,000' AGL range. Sometime before you reach this point you will want to have the approach's ILS frequency tuned on the ILS panel, the ILS system powered on, and the ILS button illuminated on the NMSP. It is helpful to have the HSI CRS knob set to the magnetic heading of the landing runway but not critical. You can get the runway heading from the F10 map with the distance tool and then subtract 6 degrees from that for local variation. Stow the ADI steering bars as they are misaligned and unnecessary for the approach. As you reach the point given by ATC, turn toward the airfield keeping pattern altitude. You should cross the ILS localizer signal and the CDI needle on the HSI centers to show this. Fly the needle centered toward the airport until the glide scope needle on the left side of the ADI stops having a red flag and drops to the middle of the window. When the G/S needle reaches the middle of the window, pitch down about 3 degrees (TVV) and continue toward the airport. If the CDI is displaced right then fly to the right to center it. If the G/S is above center then maintain altitude until it drops back to center. Keep this picture until you have visual contact with the runway. Proceed to land with visual reference. You arrive at 2500' as you've done the distance at the heading that ATC told you. Around that time you should be intercepting the TACAN radial as seen by the needle swinging to center. As it does turn toward the station directly. A good approach will have to cross at a 30-45 degree angle for an easy but positive intercept. DCS ATC isn't always so kind so a more severe turn may be required. At any time you can bug ATC with an "I'm Lost" request and they will give you a heading to the point they want you to fly. As you arrive at the point ATC should clear you for the visual approach. Turn in the airfield anyway when you intercept the TACAN radial. Switch over to the ILS system by turning off the TACAN button and turning on the ILS button on the NMSP and verify you're getting a signal.2 points

For some reason, I can't get enough of them so this is for those of us with in-cockpit complex. These aren't rules but I'd prefer to keep it military, any era, and preferably without music. I also prefer the camera pointing forward where HUD and panel can be seen but any angle will do. Let's start a library full of your best finds. My favorites so far: The end is a bit of an anti-climax. BDODPtvUUJQ eyGWzK4Gqgc k9vVzFKSHHQ&feature YseNtrdzNOM&feature Here's how to embed a youtube video in the forums... Hello there. So, I've been reading the manual, doing the training exercises, viewing the videos, etc. What I have found is that all of these are, in a word, unhelpful. We need a beginners guide to the sim, period. For example, everything regarding launching maverick missiles references this magical "TMS forward". That is great...after 5 hours of searching I've found that this is a special piece of hardware not listed under the games hardware requirements. I don't want to put the money into another joystick. I have several I use for X-plane 9. In addition, there is zero reference to TMS forward in the controls setup for DCS A-10C. My question is, how in the friggin' world do you launch a damned maverick missile WITHOUT the special A-10 hardware? Please don't point me to another youtube video or PDF, I've viewed them all, seriously.1 point

The VFAT Staff and over 100 virtual aerobatic pilots would like to invite you to the Virtual Festival of Aerobatic Teams 2010. The Virtual Festival of Aerobatic Teams or VFAT is a big international airshow like RIAT or MAKS and spectators will be able to watch the demonstrations flown LIVE through our VFAT TV. The pilots mostly simulate the displays of real aerobatic teams like the Patrouille Suisse, Thunderbirds, Blue Angels, Russian Knights and Blue Impulse, however, many teams also create their own spectacular displays instead of simulating real life counterparts. Witness the result of another year of hard work by the pilots, simply for the enjoyment to the general public! ---------------------------------------- VFAT 2010 Dates: December 03/04/05 Watch LIVE here: http://www.virtual-airshows.com/english/vfattv/vfat-tv-europe ---------------------------------------- The VFAT 2010 Performers: Team Participants The Virtual Snowbirds Virtual Aerobatic Team "Berkuts" The Jet-E-Sons The Virtual Blue Impulse Virtual Turkish Stars 3GO Cube Aerobatic Team Virtual Patriots Jet Team Virtual Blue Angels Patrulla Helibelula Advanced Precision Aerobatic SQuadron Fighting Woodpeckers Virtual Ukrainian Falcons OWWE Osa RAF "Virtual Russian Knights" RAF "Virtual Swifts" Blue Comets Virtual USAF Heritage Flight Solo Participants Virtual European Air Operations Virtual Viper East Demonstration Team Virtual Viper West Demonstration Team HDF 59th "Szentgyörgyi Dezső" Virtual Air Base Virtual F-14 Tomcat Demonstration Team Virtual F/A-18C Hornet West TACDEMO (With Legacy flight) Hungarian Gripen Solo Display Team Virtual Belgian F-16 Solo Display Virtual F-16 Solo Displayteam Solo Freestyle by Faucon Virtual Strike Eagle Demo VAT "Berkuts" Solo by Sawamura Black Shark Demo by Cygan OWWE Osa Ka50 Solo by Shadow We hope to welcome you in our VFAT TV Chat during the event! I had a long inner debate on where to post this - here, or Hardware. In the end, I obviously felt it did relate, only... not. :) I had a look at the rules, and while there was a very clear one about advertising products, I couldn't find any mention of restrictions on offers to buy cast-off stuff from others... so... So, what do I want? :music_whistling: I've sort of noticed how this has been a tumultuous period, as far as hardware goes. New joysticks left, right and center (OK, so the X52 isn't exactly new, but neither's my X45), AMD and Intel slugging it out, AMD (well, ATI, anyway) and Nvidia slugging it out - and some of you guys seem to actually keep your systems recent. Now, I'm looking to eventually make an upgrade (and barring... potentially embarrassing mishaps, it actually looks like I'll go ahead with it this time) from an AM2-era desktop. AMD/Intel/Nvidia isn't important - I mean, I'm quite happy with my AMD/ATI-mileage this far, but I have nothing religious against trying Intel this time around. My GeForce 9600GT has also behaved very well. But do you have any hardware lying around you wouldn't mind selling me? Keep in mind I live in Scandinavia - shipping from USA or other funny remote places could be more trouble than it's worth. Present specs: ASUS M2N-E AMD Athlon X2 6400 BE (I admit I'm not sure about the name - only from X2 onwards; it was a few years ago) 3 Gb DDR2-800 (or was it 667?) GeForce 9600GT (Sparkle, passive cooling, likely 512 Mb) ... Some blue PSU from when PCIe was fairly new, maybe 450W. :smartass: (Bonus: I have a Saitek X45 that's showing both age and eccentricity. Got an X52 or something in that general neck of woods to replace it with?) My target system is AM3-/Intel 1156-era, at least 4 Gb DDR3, 1 Gb VRAM on a single GPU, quad-core CPU (ideally either Phenom II 955/965 or Core i5-760 or there-abouts). Regarding the RAM, I would appreciate some input on what I'd have to gain from using 1600 MHz-rated sticks compared to 1333. If I go Intel, I would probably try overclocking. I have a hardware store near me that can probably point me in a few good directions, but recommendations on cooling would be appreciated. (NOT going to push 4 GHz...) I'll be sure to consult guides before I start tinkering. For the GPU, I've been eyeing pretty much anything from the HD5750 and up. I used to think I didn't need a particularly beefy GPU (present monitor limited to 1280x1024), but now The Witcher 2 is fast approaching release...1 point

I thought this might help provide a different way of looking at various HOTAS commands that was possibly easier to look at and learn than the table in the manual. I was creative about the vocabulary in some places. The goal is more of a reminder sheet for someone who has read the manual but hasn't committed everything to memory than as a primary source of info. Criticism welcome.1 point

First, given the English language first appeared on England and is also the primary language of 35 countries and territories around the world, its not terribly obvious that you are from U.S. just because you speak it. Second, look at my written english and take a guess of where I'm coming from. If you think its from any english-speaking country, you will be very mistaken.1 point

I am familiar with particle systems in max and i could try to make a mod for the explosions, but i have absolutely no clue how to input the particles to the engine from 3ds max, not sure if that is even possible. and i dont know much about optimizing stuff like that, but i'd be willing to give it a try. Also, why is it that so many people seem to get angry from topics that concern graphics and say something like "this is a flight sim, if you want eye candy, go play this and that" Simulators simulate real world, right? i dont see anything wrong if people want realism in graphics too.1 point

Hey guys, I hope everyone had a good holiday weekend (for those of us who celebrate). I actually managed to not stuff myself and was able to get a lot of work done. :) I turned out all the left and right console "prototype" panels. I call these prototype becuase I know I'll need to make some modifications to the design as I start adding the switches and other hardware. Once some more aluminum sheet arrives, I'll start cutting out the switch plates. The only panels not shown in the pic are the panels that are included with the TM Warthog and the CDU. Next comes painting and engraving, which I still need to perfect the process for, but I'm close.1 point

TACview could do this in Blackshark, I dont know if it is compatable with Warthog yet. But I am sure once A10 WH has gone gold then Tacview will be updated. Cheers Tom1 point

Let's clarify a few things. I have pilot training, so I'm not a newbie at flying in real life, nor sims. I was also with an A-10 unit for 5 years, the 172nd out of Battle Creek, MI. I know more about the A-10 than your average person, but a pilot of that rig I am not. My main issue is that, while this may be a "study sim", nearly 700 pages is a bit excessive. Hell I didn't do that much reading for my masters degree. A clear, concise, newbie manual for this particular sim is in order, regardless of the rather elitist opinions out there. Moving on, I know what TMS is. I know what HOTAS is. Simply saying, "TMS forward" doesn't help much considering the verbiage doesn't match the sim's keyboard mapping prefs. They call it "TMS up". That is not the same as forward. The analogy about the car doesn't work here, sorry. Everyone knows how to drive a car. Not everyone knows how to fly a combat aircraft. Don't take this as ranting, kylania, take it as constructive criticism (it is always hard to decipher someone's tone on the Internet). I do, however very much appreciate the reply and will take a look at the links you provided.1 point

Read and digest what Kylania and Frederf have said, then watch the 3 part video series. You'll be fine. Less ranting, more understanding. First thing to understand, DCS: A-10C is a study sim. It's not a game, therefore a "beginner's guide" is going to be a much higher level than "Push this, push that" it will assume that you understand that "TMS Forward" means "Push the TMS HOTAS switch forward". It also assumes you know what TMS (Target Management System) and HOTAS (Hands on Throttle and Stick) mean. It's up to you to remember which keyboard commands are mapped to which HOTAS function. It's kind of like someone saying "Press the brake pedal to slow the car" and you asking "But how the hell am I supposed to know which foot to use!? What's a brake pedal!? Do I need a special car?" First thing you need to do is study the HOTAS key mappings so that when someone says TMS Foward you know they mean "LCtrl+Up". You should probably map this to whatever joystick you're using if you can. Second thing is to reference posts like purpjj1's really nice one from eariler today. He broke down the Mav YouTube video from Tygerr in step by step text format, I think that's exactly what you're looking for: http://forums.eagle.ru/showthread.php?t=62525 Mavs are pretty easy once you get the basic steps down. Find the target with the TGP, mark it as SPI, slave your Mav to SPI, slew the Mav to get a lock, rifle! Check out that post I linked, review your keymappings (especially the HOTAS stuff) and try again. You'll get it, just takes some time. :) Edit: You might also like this: http://forums.eagle.ru/showthread.php?t=625481 point

IMO, 256/128 is probably a better setting... with 56k you are bound to have very inaccurate and "bouncy" sort of lagg as not enough data is sent through, especially in large mission environments... I guess its all about finding a balance... in FC1 128/128 was clearly proven to be the best, i think in DCS a slight increase to 256/128 is warranted due to the more complex Ka-50 flight modeling, etc At least it seems logical to me...1 point

There is no DCS without a compatibility. As far as I know I always considered the DCS Idea like a base engine you can buy compatible modules that can interact in a online enviroment... if this concept goes into to the bin now the idea and DCS is dead and I can go back to ArmA II where they managed this but with a low and generic simulation level. No online compatibility - no DCS - no more need to buy it. And it wold be still a shame to leave the first two AFM aircraft in the series behind.1 point
