Things I learned after watching Red Tails (2012): 1. Germans are not smart, you're leading the enemy back to your base and don't think about radioing ahead to warn them. 2. The enemy is more polite then your own countrymen, they refer to the Red tails as 'Africans' and your own use the n-word. 3. Escaping from a German POW camp looks really easy. 4. A good way to pickup Italian women is to do a flyover of her house and then show up at her doorstep. 5. When you design an airfield in a combat zone, make sure you place the buildings and tents within 20 feet of the runway sides and put the largest concentration at the end of the runway. 6. When you yank back on the stick and kick the rudder hard at 400+ km/h your plane will stop and pirouette in mid-air and your guns will align up perfectly on the enemy on your six. 7. Me-262s always attacked in packs of 20 or so. 8. When you are escorting bombers to the enemy's capital it is no big deal to chatter incessantly on the radios and even talk about where you are going and where you are. 9. Me-262's sound like Tie Fighters from Star Wars. 10. Making a head-on pass at an Me-262's cannons is a smart tactical move. 11. German warships sailed alone in broad daylight right near an American air base. 12. Despite being 180+ km/h faster, German jets are cupcakes when facing the Red Tails. 13. Me-262's cannons are only strong enough to plink aircraft hulls and put small holes into the canopy. 14. .50 cal machine guns on B17s sounded like that of a twin turbo laser. 15. When your best friend dies during aerial combat and you see his plane crash to the ground, you woodenly say "Damn!" like you just dropped your slice of pizza. 16. Fighters are now required to fly in between the bombers to protect them. 17. Momma doesn't care if the foreigner you let in your home soils your couch with your daughter in a premarital romp that would create a shotgun wedding back home. 18. German 30mm rounds made 8mm bullet holes. 19. German prison guards are horrible shots. 20. American bomber pilots all wear leather jackets with a big picture of a B17 on the back like a high school letterman's jacket. 21. The Germans only used 109s, skipped 190s, and went straight to a whole lone squadron of Me-262s. 22. Italian women say, "I love you" first in the relationship. Any Italian ladies here by the way?2 points

They were biodegradable. Made of paper. One use. Non strategic material. Lighter than metal. "The British also made their own contribution to the range problem in the form of a new drop tank that accommodated 409 liters (108 US gallons) and which was made of plastic-impregnated paper. This sounds a little crazy, particularly since the fuel would rot the tank if left in it for more than eight hours. Nonetheless, the paper drop tanks were perfectly effective, and were lighter and cheaper than metal drop tanks. Dropping them over German territory also did not provide the enemy with aluminum they could scavenge for their own war effort. Production rates of the paper drop tanks eventually reached 24,000 a month." Just read about them today! http://www.crazyhorseap.be/Mustangs/History/P-51BC/P-51BC_03.htm1 point

This isn't the thread or the place to discuss another sim but I can't just let this one go by. (And may it please the court that I have made many similar impassioned defenses of DCS over at riseofflight.com.) Rise of Flight the most accurate simulator ever to model light aircraft. Nothing offered before--not FSX, not X-Plane and certainly not IL2--have come nearly as close in providing the player a true sense of flight. It is guilty of more than a few faults but "arcadiness" is definitely not one of them.1 point

The AI is fine as it is in my book (except their lack of ammo weight, of course). Air combat is an art, and the P-51 requires a good understanding of energy management to fly effectively. I have no problems with making easier AI available, as long as we leave the present difficulty intact for the more experienced pilots. It's nice to finally have something that doesn't sit there and flop around aimlessly all night. That being said, they could even use improvement when ED has the time. Pursuit curves, wing unloading, etc. Make sure you mess with starting speeds, TimmyD. Relative energy at the merge is a big deal, and easily determines the outcome of the entire fight.1 point

Maybe you activated debugging mode, thats what caused slowdowns for me....1 point

dust partical effects DCS World tank movements aircraft jetwash helo rotorwash and artillery rocket fire dust effects.. imo this needs seasonal color settings , summer richer brown dust partical effects , winter will be snow dusting, wet conditions less dusting effects but more water vapour, aircrafts take off and helos in wet concretes water moisture effects from thrust. option to disable and enable these effects in GUI , or options.LUA file.1 point

Thought it'd be fun to try and fly like Hoover, the "Tennesee Waltz" and one wheel touchdown stuff starts at about 6:20. I botched the vertical roll after the 16 point roll, and kind of flopped over the top, but it was somewhat controlled  eBp5lpl7LBE?hd=1 I got the idea from these videos TRt6UnNzR6I QzeBLXlZhXQ as a side note, his autobiography "Forever Flying" is an excellent read.1 point

It seems to be working fine to me. Keep in mind its different type of compass. the compass its self is located in the wing. the right wing i beleave and then it is connected electricaly to the guage. so its only going to read correctly when flying straight and level. On the other hand. you will also notice you have a gyro compass in the aircraft. in straight and level flight you adjust the gyro compass to the magnetic compass. the Gyro compass will give you the correct headding while in a turn. But you will need to set the gyro compass often to the magnetic compass. depending how quick the gyro compass gets out of wack Jesse1 point

One must understand how IL-2 works. This is not a "how it feels" game. More of a "numbers say this" game. The original IL-2 (first release not FB) was quite well made, everything seemed to work according to what you might have expected and a 190 would pretty much always own those damned Lavochkins. Stuff got messed up with Forgotten Battles and Pacific Fighters (the latter one being not actually Oleg's projects, but Luthier's - the guy responsible for CloD). Now the main problem is, that the initial game took only some basic numbers (weight, wingspan, engine power, etc) and calculated the FM somehow - I'm not really sure about how it was, just repeating what some people refered to as common knowledge. After jets and more complicated planes got in the game, each FM was specific for the aircraft. Initially some planes would defy the laws of physics (190, full rudder, yanking stick back did not result in a flip). Anyway, most of the stuff got fixed by now, but people are still complaining. I think it's the game engine's limitations that come into play (drag is a bit of an abstract concept in IL-2, prop pitch also is not exactly what it is, only the recent patch did proper stuff to overheating). I could go on and on, played this for years, mostly offline, but I am more or less familiar with the FM battles on forums. I think with such an amount of planes and people ranting, it's now impossible to make the FMs how they should be. Last changes to the 190 made it a no drag plane and it turns out, the drag for the FWs is mostly from the prop. The Corsair also got slowed down to match what the charts said and all was fine till people discover it was too slow to take off at times. Anyway, there is a ton of stuff that can be said, but the reason Oleg did not listen is probably because many people contacted him saying they are pilots and this and that is wrong and it wasn't possible to make everyone happy. Now Team Daidalos do the patches and it's a great job they are doing (like the AI, finally!), they seem to listen, though I wouldn't expect IL-2 will ever feel a bit like the real thing. One thing has to be said - it was the first WWII sim, that actually showed how hard and complicated flying the planes of that time was, not to mention fighting. Suddenly, it wasn't about making Ace, it was about getting back home in one piece. The game is old and dated now, but still fun to play and easy to get into (the easiest, "serious" sim I'd say). It's simply one of the best sims ever made and will always be. Just one more thing on the FMs, the whole wrong feel, wrong performance thing in game is very subjective as well as it is subjective in real life. You'll find a dozen WWII survivors who will say that P-40, P-51, P-whatever was the best plane because they found it a good machine to fly by their subjective standards. But it also may be so, that 100 guys laying dead in the dirt would curse the plane because it got them killed. Same goes for every other side of the conflict, Russians praise their Lavochkins (somehow the did not mind 20 levers to operate the engine and a +50C temp in the cockpit) and as I'm Polish, I should feel obligated to say: take a hike, the best planes of WWII were the P11c and the Los bomber. :) Once you look past your expectations on a given plane, and start to play the game and try to fly well with what you have, it's tons of fun. Cheers all!1 point
