I've just reread your first port .. "When I start DCS and it's loading both lenses look like they are jumping between two images. It really hurts the eyes. " As far as I'm aware, we ALL experience that during load with the G2, regardless of hardware so that's a current "feature" and not your issue. I just close my eyes till it stops.

Vonbane, it is precisely the motion smoothing that is responsible for preventing the blurring/ghosting. It can only do it's magic if you can get FPS up to at least 50-60 so it has some overhead to work with. As I understand it, with the G2 set to it's native 90 Hertz frame rate, it should ideally run at 90 FPS. If it can't do that (and it really can't unless you have a top spec highly tuned rig and even then it will struggle to maintain that..unless you're Speed-of-Heat ) then you're going to get increasing blurring the lower the FPS drops, and that manifests as double-imaging/ghosting as it drops to the rates you're getting. Steam introduced motion-smoothing as a system to combat that. It drops your frame rate to a fixed 45 and then uses the unused frames to somehow smooth out the experience and the ghosting dissapears. No idea how it does that but I'm sure there are luminaries on this forum who'll correct me and explain better. Another option if you're struggling is to change the refresh rate for the G2 to 60 hertz in the WMR settings. Then you're only looking to achieve 60 FPS or with motion smoothing it will fix at 30 FPS. I haven't tried it myself and some users have reported that the slower rate causes a bit of nausea while others are fine with it.

Until recently I was running a G2 with an I7-6700K @4.5 on an ASUS Z170-P and a RTX2080 Super. After applying every optimisation suggested on these forums, and with SS at 70%, DCS settings very low , I was at best, able to get 45 FPS Motion smoothing locked, only some of the time, on very light missions. I did however, still experience exactly the heavy shimmering/sparkling you describe, both inside and outside of the cockpit. It wasn't possible to turn on any anti-aliasing to attempt to negate that effect without severely dropping FPS to an unplayable extent. The blurring you're describing I assume is double imaging/ghosting and will always be seen in objects/terrain as you pass it when you're unable to maintain 45 FPS with motion smoothing. It was certainly flyable and very enjoyable if I kept to simple missions and accepted the shimmering, but sadly I suspect that if you want to unleash the G2 on DCS as it was intended, your only recourse is to upgrade your hardware. If you read around this forum you'll see that there are scenarios in DCS that will challenge even the highest spec rigs with the G2. I was lucky enough to be able to scrape together the funds to upgrade and the results are breathtaking.

Thanks guys, I'll stick with stock settings on the 5900X for now then. Have to say, the VR experience with the G2 on this rig is just awesome. Really can't imagine flying 2D for any reason other than perhaps ocasional module learning. I've actually only just installed the Hornet and Supercarrier in this free to play period (ED know what they're doing offering regular free to play periods as I no doubt will be parting with more spondulics in a couple of days!). Haven't tried a carrier landing yet..mostly because crashing in VR scares the bejesus out of me!

S-O-H, wondered if I could ask you to confirm something for me ? As mentioned above, with my new rig and your settings I'm getting rock solid 45 FPS with motion smoothing forced on. One place however, where I'm being dragged down, is on the supercarrier deck in the hornet specifically in the "Mission Qualification - Supercarrier Cold Start" mission. I'm dragged down to high 30's low 40's and it's showing CPU dancing in the red on FPSVR with plenty of overhead still on the GPU. Not a complaint as with 100% SS it doesn't detract from the visuals at all and it's gone as soon as I take off. Interestingly it doesn't happen at all if I start on the catapult in "Mission Qualification - Supercarrier Launch" which looks otherwise identical in terms of AI activity. Just wondering if you're seeing the same with your i7-9700K. Might give me an indication of whether I should look into overclocking the 5900X a tad. Thanks

There is an excellent Youtube video by Overkill (Pacman on this forum) which explains how to calibrate the Warthog throttles such that the afterburners cut in exactly as you push past the detent in a particular aircraft Takes a bit of effort and involves using the user curve sliders but well worth the effort. I've calibrated all my jets with this method. Video below, Skip forward to the 15 minute mark and watch from there

Newcastle City Hall, March 79', Overkill tour. Camped out overnight in a sleeping bag in the ticket queue outside the venue to get seats down the front. My ears are still ringing

Just noticed, Nobiwan released version 2.0 yesterday (On that other combat sim's forum thread and his Gitlab). Looks like modifiers now allowed and bunch on new features added. Will try it later

speed-of-heat × Big thank you for taking the time to post this thread mate! I've just finished setting up my new rig (based on a 5900X paired with an ASUS Strix 3090) and I've initially used your settings and optimisations almost to the letter. You've saved me a lot of time and the result is just awesome (particularly as my old rig is a 7 year old 6700K and 2080). I initially tried your 80% resolution with app specific motion smoothing enabled, and although I was getting 90 FPS at altitude, it was dropping to 45 fairly regularly and to be honest, I couldn't notice any difference between 90 and 45 anyway. I could however, notice a difference in visual quality between 80 and 100% reesolution so I've opted for 100% with motion smoothing forced on and I'm getting rock solid 45 FPS everywhere (even at 20 feet barreling down Las Vegas Strip!) . I haven't installed your Kegetys variation yet but will give it a go at some point as it definately made a big difference in my old rig. Also haven't bothered downloading Ryzen Master yet as the CPU hasn't been out of the green on FpsVR once. The only optimision I've applied that you heven't listed is : Create Registry entry "PreallocateVirtualMonitors" DWORD (32-bit) value in "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Holographic" and set it to 0 This prevents Windows from creating up to 3 virtual monitors when you connect your headset, which has been reported to improve FPS. Did hit a couple of snags: WMR wouldn't connect to the G2 using any of the X570 motherboard USB 3 ports (documented issue that AMD and HP are reportedly working on). However, worked perfectly when I plugged an unpowered USB 3 hub into one of those ports, and the G2 into that. Go figure. This afternoon I started getting tracking issues. First I lost the lateral DOF, then random tracking stutters happening more and more. Restarted DCS and then SteamVR and DCS. Didn't help. I eventually took off the headset to find it was 17:30 and I was sitting in total darkness !! Eeeeediot ! Thanks again mate.

New Rig - Ryzen 9 5900x + PALIT RTX 3090 ?
ShaunX replied to ShaunX's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
...appear to have resolved this myself. I have an external USB 3 hub, which is switchable between 2 machines (so I can use same keyboard and mouse for either machine with the push of a button). This is plugged into one of the rear USB 3 motherboard ports on the X570. I removed the keyboard and mouse dongles from that hub, relocated them temporarily in my x570 rig front ports, then plugged the G2 into one of the ports. The G2 now works perfectly ! Don't understand how, as the port the hub is plugged into on the X570 is one I already tried unsuccessfully with the G2, but I'm not complaining. Now of course I'll have to get an additional one of those hubs, as that one is for keyboard and mouse and located on my desk -
New Rig - Ryzen 9 5900x + PALIT RTX 3090 ?
ShaunX replied to ShaunX's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
Hi Raven, Got my new 5900X rig with an ASUS Strix 3090. Everything looking good until I tried the G2 and experienced the problem you mentioned with the 570 motherboard USB ports. WMR was unable to communicate with the G2. I had a PCIe 4 port USB 3 card in my old rig so installed that and that seemed to resolve the problem. However, now it seems to work well in both WMR and Steam for a few minutes and then suddenly everything rotates and I'm suspended upside down! The card has regular size USB ports and I'm using the USB-C adaptor which HP kindly ship with the G2. Any suggestions ? Is there a specifc USB card spec I need to use ? or maybe a powered USB hub maybe ? I've also read that some users changed PCIe 4.0 back to PCIe 3.0 in the BIOS and that resolved the issue for them for the motherboard ports. -
Just read this so apologies for the late reply. I think I can guess what happened. When you use the "Location" tab in the Saved Games properties to change the folder's location, you MUST firstly manually create a folder named "Saved Games" on the destination drive, and select that as the destination folder in the location tab. If you don't do that, and just attempt to relocate it to, say D:\, it will just move all files and subdirectories (and indeed the important registry entry) to be directly under D:\, i.e. NOT in a Saved Games folder. If you then search for the Saved Games folder on the destination drive, it won't find one by that name as you didn't create it first.

Mobile Broadband Multiplayer Server ?
ShaunX replied to ShaunX's topic in Multiplayer Server Administration
Thanks for the reply. Yeah, I pretty much figured that was the case but thought I'd put it to you experts on this forum to be sure. -
I assumed the problem was specifically that the UAC causes the headset displays to go black if you launch it as administrator, then you have to remove the headset to click on the UAC on your desktop, thus breaking the immersion. (At least that was my experience with the G2/WMR) So by setting up an administrator task with a shortcut, you can launch (or re-launch) VA anytime in VR from a virtual desktop and there will be no immersion break because no UAC.
-
With this method you can set up Voice Attack to run as a scheduled task as administrator, then create a shortcut to that task, and then you just launch the short cut. Result, VA/Viacom runs as administrator and no UAC pop up. Elevated Program Shortcut without UAC Prompt - Create - Windows 7 Help Forums (sevenforums.com) works for 8 and 10 as well

I live in a rural location in the UK where the only option for high speed broadband is with a connection via a dish on our roof to a cellphone tower. This actually works extremely well and provides approx 70Mbps down and 35Mbps up. However, the connection is really designed for cellphone use and as such the providers don't offer individual IP addresses - rather, as I understand it, many users are clumped together in shared public IP addresses. There are companies which do offer fixed IP SIM cards, but these are aimed at business and so are prohibitively expensive. So, although I've been able to successfully set up a multiplayer DCS server on a spare machine and use it within my home network, I don't believe it will be possible, even via a DNS service, for me to publish the DCS server externally. I'm no networking expert however, can anyone here advise me otherwise ?

Thank you.

New Rig - Ryzen 9 5900x + PALIT RTX 3090 ?
ShaunX replied to ShaunX's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
Very valid arguements both ways, thank you. I guess my thinking is this: I've been reading the VR forums for the last few months. There, users with rigs comprable to the one I'm proposing are having excellent experiences in VR with the G2, with pretty high settings all round. So unless ED make changes that are going to drag those high end user experiences down (which I image would seriously damage their less well equipped customer base) I'd hope I'd have no reason at all to upgrade anything for at least the next 5 years. It's not like I'm going to get bored with (or get near to mastering!) what's available now. -
New Rig - Ryzen 9 5900x + PALIT RTX 3090 ?
ShaunX replied to ShaunX's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
I hear what you're saying Qiou87, and I have been wrestling with that too. In it's defence I've read a number of posts from seasoned VR pilots with G2s stating that DCS is using over 10 GB VRAM on the 3090 ("I frequently use more than 10Gb of VRAM, 12 in the caucuses, more in the Channel"). I've actually just spoken to my builder and after they reviewed what I'm proposing to buy and my issue with the PALIT they suddenly confirmed that they have the ASUS STRIX (which is at the top of that list) I agree it's a BIG purchase and not one I take lightly. I recently took voluntary redundancy (which at my age effectively retires me - no complaints here;) and so have some settlement funds to play with, and LOTS of time on my hands. So looking to future proof myself (as much as that is admittedly possible) which is why I'm leaning towards the 3090. I do really appreciate everyones advice. I may take the plunge today. Perhaps I'll just have another coffee and watch the cricket for a while first.... -
New Rig - Ryzen 9 5900x + PALIT RTX 3090 ?
ShaunX replied to ShaunX's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
Well folks, I was on the verge of ordering my new rig, and then last night I happened upon a video comparing performance data on 8 RTX 3090 cards (Titled "Which RTX 3090 to BUY and AVOID! Ft. Nvidia, Asus Gigabyte, MSI, Palit, Zotac" on Youtube). The PALIT card (the only one my builder currently has available) comes a resounding bottom in the reviewers conclusion. This has obvioulsy made me think twice about rushing into the purchase. I'll speak to them today to see if they have any others on order. -
Agreed, and it's pretty easy to get NEAR perfect trim in the warthog in a few seconds. By comparison I really struggle to get close in the Viper with an asymetric load (roll trim only obviously) I still can't AAR to safe my life (literally!) and no amout of perfect trim is gonna help. Just got to put the hours in when I get round to it.
-
I can't imagine a scenario where I'd want to spend time achieving perfect trim over just popping on one of the excellent autopilot modes. I live in autopilot in the Warthog - ascending/descending I use PATH, level flight ALT/HDG and ALT to circle a target area. For Maverick deployment I'll even angle down towards a target area and pop it in PATH, then my hands and attention are free to slew mavs at multiple targets. Also for GBU-38s I can line up roughly with the CCRP fall line, engage ALT-HDG and again I'm free to slew and designate SPIs on targets to pickle off mutiple GPS guided bombs - and this also works well for single laser guided bomb deployment. I'm pretty sure this is common practice IRL and explains why there's a dedicated autopilot engage/disengage button under your ring finger on the Warthog throttle.

ah, right, so allow DCS to create an input folder/aircraft sub folders then replace the controller files it creates with my copies, using the new names, makes sence. All good news, many thanks.
