Definitely one for the next generation. Imagine the respectable amount of power your pc has to have to run Crysis maxed out crossed with a complex flight sim like DCS or FSX! You'd need to have one hell of a rig, but of course that's not an issue for the military. Having said that, far better graphics have been available for their sims for a long time but I don't think that's top priority given the purpose of their sims.

That's an awesome first go Flim, can't wait to see the later versions.

In some situations I find using the union feature with pro boolean helpful in those sorts of geometries mikoyan, but you've got to have a plan to clean it up and smooth out the joins. Its not necessary or practical to have vertexes evenly spaced all the time, but I'd probably consider starting again (I do it from time to time) if its a bit messy and thinking about your approach. At the moment it looks like you're too high poly to turbosmooth and too high to just simply make some small adjustments, if you're looking to put this in a game that is. Is front to back then adding the wings the best way? Try and have a rough idea of the workflow you're going to pursue to minimise the over-manipulation of vertices. Sometimes though, it just takes a $#@$load of tweaking ;)

If not, we're metric and I'm pretty sure you can get those here too (Australia).

Guys, go to this website, it has everything you need and its all very cheap. I think his aim is to sell replica sticks and throttles, but whilst he's developing them he's selling buttons, hats, switches and whatever else. Splash one bandit. Edit: Bah Sokol1, you bastard! :D

That chicken seems to really love the CH merchandise.

Spare no details on your gauge build; I'm keen to start on my own but from what I've seen people's builds have been pretty 'swing-and-miss' in that regard. I've got to do it right!
-
Very nice looking build so far Flim. What are you using as a guide for constructing your gauges?

I'm a big fan of doing as much as I can with as little polygons as possible. This is a WIP for a certain sim, poly count is currently 3500 tris or around 2900 quads. Excuse the seam down the middle as the aircraft is still in two halves. Aside from that I still haven't finished the divertless intake, the bump on the top of the right intake or the two on the bay doors and as you can probably see, the cockpit needs to be finished: Note: I get a lot of comments about the squarish nose. If you check out the real F-35 (not the X-35 prototype), that's how it looks ;)

Don't Walk...Run Away from the G940
MudRat02 replied to ericinexile's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
I have this weird issue where if I have to move the stick forward and back by a slight amount quickly, for instance when I need to return to an altitude I can't keep because of the poor accuracy of the throttle and trim, the stick has a seizure in FFB terms. Literally oscillates between full forward and full back as hard and fast as it can, making loud banging noises as it does. -
Ok, so I wanted to make a start on a project (mainly the UFC and DDIs then see if I want to progress) and as per Ripcord's advice I went about blowing the pic up 400% but I've run into some trouble: I don't need that entire page blown up so visiting a print shop isn't really necessary. What I really need is to be able to print parts of it at 400% (the UFC and DDIs should fit on an a4 easily) but adobe reader is giving me hell. There seems to be no option to print at 400% and obviously if I screencap it or use the reader's snapshot tool (which is essentially the same) and do it with another program, then the scale will not remain intact. The net hasn't been much help either. Anyone know how to do this?

DCS has very good graphics for the complexity of the engine. Complex weather, flight mechanics, avionics .ect end up taxing your system quite a bit. I do like the HAWX graphics though, I've been known to play it very occasionally just for a bit of fun.

An Su-27/30 has a frontal radar cross-section of 10m2? I'd like to see some reliable sources for that.
-
Very helpful raus, thanks!
-
That's a gem, deadman. Seems like a great setup for a cockpit.
-
Thanks, that would be very helpful! I need the DDI bezel dimensions and the UFC the most.
-
Thanks for the info ripcord, wish I came here sooner! Just how accurate is the 400% rule? I just did it for the DDI screen out of interest and I was .02 inches bigger than the 5 inches some have been quoting, but is that screen supposed to be 5 inches on the dot? Half a millimetre is easy enough accuracy for me, just wondering if the 5x5 inch screen was a roundabout figure to start with.

Hi guys, I've been trying to find some decent measurements for Hornet (F/A-18 ABCD, not Super) parts. It seems like frugals world used to have quite a bit of info in this regard but it has been gone for quite some time. The pictures below is about all I have found, apart from that I have the Hornet manuals and a book with good reference shots, but no information on scale/dimensions. I thought I'd start by making the upfront control first (then I can decide if I want to continue on :smilewink:), so does anyone have any info on the dimensions of the UFC? Anyone have any other good information on the dimensions of panels inside the pit apart from the stuff below (credit to a user named Pretzel on SIMHQ)? Thanks
-
Defs not a Hornet or Super Hornet, looks like a Eurofighter, though I don't know a great deal about the latter.
-
Nice screen/price, in fact all the prices on that site are great which makes it all the more disappointing that they don't have anything that isn't a touch screen. :(
-
OpenCockpit / SIOC actually looks like a good choice given that the capability, although complex, is there from the start as opposed to Leo Bodnar's chip and additional software.
-
I've been watching this for a while, very nice progress! I'm thinking about doing one, how are you going to interface the switches/rotaries to your computer though? I was thinking of using one of Leo Bodnar's chips but I thought there might be a better way of interfacing switches rather than treat it like a joystick.

Can't see why they couldn't just make the middle part of the canopy the same projection material and have a second projector in there. Full canopy for your jet! ...an expensive one.

Next DCS (US) Fixed Wing Aircraft Wish List
MudRat02 replied to diecastbg's topic in DCS Core Wish List
Lightning and Raptor aren't really a realistic ask; so much about them is under wraps that it would hardly be a realistic sim in the vein of the A-10 and Ka-50. Super Hornet and Tomcat would be good ones, as would the F-15, F-18, MiG-29 and Su-27...no interest in the F-16 at the moment, we've all been simming that for decades :/
