What makes the Apache the most difficult helicopter module to fly?
JetCat replied to Schmidtfire's topic in DCS: AH-64D
It is the best of the best!! I am still thinking about what module would be more interesting for me the A-10 or the Apache, they are both so awesome. And the flight model is so great I have never flown a better and more realistic helicopter simulator. Also thanks to finding out force trim (because some YouTuber made a complete Hind force trim tutorial about this topic) helicopter flying is so much better and so much more natural now. Real helicopters don´t have a control stick that always forces it´s stick into a centered position with a strong spring while the helicopter is in a slightly off center and unstable cyclic and rudder position. Luckily force trim function gets rid of this problem perfect hoovering is now possible. This is because of helicopter physics. There is no one general tail rotor setting for all flight conditions. The more the collective is pulled to ascent the stronger the torque coming from the steeper blades gets. That´s why the tail rotor needs constant change of input, and the most counter force while hoovering. When force trimming the helicopter to perfect hoover it begins to yaw again when gaining speed and not counteracting with the pedals because the main rotor is giving lower torque to the airframe when flying compared to hoovering. You need to force trim it for hoover, force trim it again for smooth and steady flight forward, and again force trim it when going back into hoover mode or even descending and VTOL-landing. The Apache has no autopilot feature that auto-corrects tail rotor yaw like the Hind which makes it a bit more unstable to fly with constant smooth corrections necessary. But when getting into the mission zone and when the action begins why not quickly switching seats to the front seat? Pilot George loves to perfect hoover the heli for you while you focus on it´s front cockpit targeting systems... -
Hi, I am not sure if I can ask this here or if this is classified data - but I have never seen nor used a radar like the Apache has. Every air to ground radar does some kind of terrain mapping, showing the terrain or silhouettes of it when using the Tomcat RIO, sometimes even silhouettes of houses and stuff are possible when zooming in with the Hornet. That looks like this: The Apacho on the other hand has a complete different system, a "millimeter radar" (to be honest I need to check on Wikipedia what this excatly is and how it differs from other AA / AG radars like for example the Tomcat or Hornet have) and this radar does not show any terrain, but it can automatically identify vehicle types, showing their position and distance on a map grid: So the simulated Apache fire control radar is true to life and it really looks like this? Very impressive to see how authentic this simulated Apache is! But is the Apache radar also capable of mapping the terrain and it´s structures like for example the Hornet? Because camouflaged tanks (covered with branches and other stuff cloaking their geometric shape) seem to be invisible for this radar system therefore it would be awesome to also scan the terrain from above to have a visual look of what is going on down there.

I think the Apache too would like this new secretive missile for the more special and elusive targets!

Of course the most beautiful and futuristic helicopter ever designed, the Rah-66 Comanche.

correct as-is Furry-Fabric Upholstered Cockpit Seat
JetCat replied to Bob1943's topic in DCS: F-16C Viper
But the fluffy seats are the best thing in the PMDG 737 too! Why do you want them gone in your F-16? I wish the other planes had so much fluff and comfort and airconditioning to make my virtual pilot feel nice and cozy all-around. Top-notch seventies and eighties aircraft design, not so minimalistic, cheap-out mass-produced and unpersonal as nowadays. This seat gives the F-16 personality and cozy comfort. -
Hi friends, because you are currently creating a new fine pilot 3D-model for our beloved Viper I thought the time is good to notify about a texture glitch to the right of the ejection seat: Thank you very much for creating the best and greatest new F-16 since Falcon 4.0 and have a wonderful weekend!

Making TADS crosshair jump to target point not possible?
JetCat replied to JetCat's topic in DCS: AH-64D
Unfortunately I can´t do this for a few days because the trial version of the Apache is now over. But it was the best flying experience I ever had (or was it with the Hind...? Or the A-10 Still not sure...) If everything goes well I will buy it next week -
Hi, When moving the pilot head upward for a better view around I have seen the gunner cockpit in front of me has only it´s upper radio panel on (the one with the yellow digits), but the rest of his whole cockpit and all displays are just black and switched off. Please add an option in the extras menu for stronger computers to also render the CPG copilot displays while being back in the pilot seat. Seeing the full copilot-cockpit switched on (and illuminated at night) when looking down into the front cockpit really enhances the immersion when flying with higher pilot viewpoint. Have a wonderful weekend to you all!

Hi, thank you very much. I have never before used this coordinate system. What is a track file? -
Interview with former Hind pilot (with engl. subs)
JetCat replied to Deimos's topic in DCS: Mi-24P Hind
Fascinating interview. Very interesting insight and personal information about the Hind. Especially fascinating was the fact that a few versions where equipped with a Gatling (I never knew Russians use this type of weapon!), is there a chance our Hind will be equipped with this weapon too some day? Imagine the side cannon or this Gatling to choose from in the rearm window. -

The F-15 would have been my next jet plane because of it´s absolute awesome night flight capabilities, long-range radar and FLIR implemented in the HUD. Hm now it seems like the Eagle is down... can we still get the beta version please, maybe modders can fix it.

What makes the Apache the most difficult helicopter module to fly?
JetCat replied to Schmidtfire's topic in DCS: AH-64D
After three days of Apache training it is now no longer difficult thanks to force trim, and feels almost like the Hind. Landing is still very hard so sitting in the front seat and letting George do the touchdown is the comfortable solution for this task. -
Yesss!!! Awesome! At least the engine covers, I want to see the turbines edit: The dream came true, even in the Apache. Now there is only the Hind left that needs the same lovely treatment of internal details.

I personally hope for a hook-update, making these hooks move even more and physically correct. These animations are so next level in the Apache cockpit, the cable of the flashlight is fully animated and moves around, the hook moves, some parts of this AR-15 wobble. Lovely - this cockpit really feels alive and next-gen next-level, and not static at all. So this is a helmet hook. Interesting. I always thought additional weapons or the pilot´s jacket are hanging there while not flying.

It is indeed very relaxing to sit there, taking care of the radar and the weapons. Love that RIO seat in the Tomcat too! (I have always only flown the Fenix with autopilot always on and ILS CAT3 autoland in FS2020 - that might explain a lot) that´s why using the front seat feels just like using an autopilot while controlling all the cockpit navigation computers and systems. Adding this two-seater concept of many planes and helicopters was the best idea ever! So relaxing and immersive.

Hi pilots, I have a minor problem with the Apache avionics and simply cannot solve it, not matter how many tutorial videos I watch. The first problem is making the TADS screen crosshair jump to my waypoint seems to be not functional. When repeating the steps of the tutorial videos my TATS screen either does nothing or jumps to a random position in the field The waypoint used as target. Of course there was another great background story related to the Umbrella corporation storing secret bioweapons in this tank near the Area 51 facility and they must be stopped and so on, and the target point would have been named "NEMESIS 1" but unfortunately only three letters are possible. Left multifunctions display sight set to TADS, aquisition is the target point I made (T01), missiles are ready laser is ready, TADS screen is on TADS and T01 - but unfortunately when I press the slave button nothing happens, or sometimes the TADS screen jumps to a random position in the field when having the IHADSS open. Surely there is one detail wrong hm? Why is my TADS not jumping to the pre-defined target point like it does in all YouTube video tutorials? I am sure I haven´t missed one step. The second problem is, the manual says the helicopter is taking these normal casual coordinates I am used from the Fenix Airbus, and also these exciting new "MGRS / UTM" coordinates I have learned about today. In UTM coordinates my waypoint is W84 47 11S PA42682959, but when I enter W844711SPA42682959 as described in Chucks guide to create a new target point the Apache MCDU just blinks and does not accept this coordinate format. What is not correct with this line? When entering N362405W1152463 the new target point is set after adding an altitude number.

I never thought I will ever fall in love with a hog, but it happened.... After two days of intensive-A-10-training I love my warthog! But during night flights I encountered a few problems making this airplane not as usable and versatile for night ops as the Apache. The night vision on the HMCS is waaaay to bright, in fact it is so bright that I have to dim down my right MFD display so dark it becomes unusable just to get a normal night vision view on the HMCS. When dimming the brightness on the HMCS the picture of the TGP FLIR is not dimming too. Please fix this problem and make the small FLIR picture getting dimmed too when dimming the HMCS during night flights thank you very much! Here two screenshots of the problem: Display with night vision needs to be dimmed down to almost full black to get a normal view of what the TGP-FLIR sees in the HMCS: A very very dim setting on the right MFD display already gives an ultra-bright dazzling image in the HMCS, it is so bright it is already unrecognizable, but the HMCS dim button is not dimming it: Aaaaagh my very light-sensitive cat eyes thank you very much in advance for fixing this problem.

Ah I see. Thank you very much for the info Uploading the picture to a file hoster is no problem! I think the no track launch comes from not moving the seeker crosshair of the Maverick just a tiny bit - because the crosshair immediately closes and locks afterwards (and blinks or flickers which is also a sign for a functional lock). So pressing the force correlate (boat center) button and moving the crosshair just a bit seems to solve the blocked missile launch problem.

Why is the file size of attached screenshots and pictures are getting smaller and smaller by the day? A few days ago it was 300kb, now 100..... this size is so small it is almost impossible to create such small JPEG´s with Photoshop. Thanks to the awesome guide here and a bit of learning I am now able to shoot Mavericks even without infrared guidance but computer waypoints. Lovely! This is especially important to target buildings and areas in the scenery without infrared lock for more personalized missions with background story. The backstory of this Normandy map mission was, the evil scientist Dr. Kruger S. Krötenbrugger has a doctor´s meeting on his farm where all local doctors, pharmacists and surgeons are instructed to make certain human experiments in a normal civilian environment (outside of camps and prisons) possible. But worry not the A-10 loaded with Mavericks is here to prevent this from happening! A background story more than "over there parks enemy tank!" makes missions more interesting, cool, and fun. That´s why every mission gets one, with the most stupid and clichè protagonist names possible. The mission was accomplished by shooting a Maverick without infrared lock: MCDU round switch is switched to MARK (well at least in the Fenix Airbus it is called MCDU.) Lightning target pod is used to visually track something, with point lock and not area lock, but with no visible infrared signature for the targeting pod or the Maverick to lock on. Was done by using the HUD marker and the targeting pod display zoom for more precise targeting. After visually finding the target TMS switch right short is pressed, a waypoint in the MCDU was created. MCDU showing WAYPT T, HUD showing A/MRK A. Three waypoints where created this way, can be selected with the HUD keypad "STEER" switch and China hat forward long to make the TGP camera jump to the waypoint quick. Selecting Maverick, making the Maverick display SOI, China hat forward long and the crosshair of the Maverick jumps to the waypoint of the MCDU. Moving the seeker head of the Maverick just a bit a millimeter or so just short touching it for a slight movement, and pressing force correlate button center made a lock on possible.
