Thank you so much for this post! I don't think anyone mildly interested in aviation is going to appreciate the skill of those warbird pilots. That loop in tight formation, wow! Nothing to apologize for as far as quality goes. Clearly a passion material. People posting RC fake $#ap don't feel the need to apologize so... I attended a farewell airshow myself due to personal circumstances. several years ago. Time to stretch the bones again next year. I don't plan on clocking 15 years of absence

Don't laugh, I've just discovered that F10 map has a topographic/raster option. So I tried a similar process. This time re-applying sharpening again after recomposing. If the effect is excessive to your liking you can tone down the second sharpening. The problem is the F10/editor raster map is handled by DCS as an archive containing tens of tif files. I don't have any experience in batch processing in GIMP and somehow I don't feel like diving into it. The location of the in-game raster map is D:\Eagle Dynamics\DCS World OpenBeta\Mods\terrains\TheChannel\RasterCharts\RasterCharts.zip plus some description labels file in binary format. Additionally, each of the dds files there have embedded mipmaps. I don't know whether they are used or not. The process I tried today was

Out of curiosity I checked the GIMP help page for the Sharpen filter and it had an interesting section on color distortion. I re-applied the filter as the section advised - after decomposing the image color/value components. The results are pretty astonishing! Also the latest development build of GIMP crashes with OpenCL enabled so I got rid of that factor. The results are amazing, with even more sharpness and without the previously present color distortion. Note that some image viewers may display such a sharp map poorly if they do not apply any resampling method. I exported the image in GIMP using 75% image quality (indiscernable from noncopressed!) in two variants: scaled down to 25% scaled down to 50% (which is over 10 times the size of a 1080p screen) With scaling down another batch of speckles and other inconsistencies in the image get eliminated.

What was the solution?

I don't think it's OK for me to edit the map and re-upload it myself but you can take this map https://www.digitalcombatsimulator.com/en/files/3310307/ open it in GIMP and use the Filters > Enhance > Unsharp (great name for a sharpening filter BTW) and apply the following values for great results. I think the preset *03 works best. Just copy the values from the screenshots, since it's a custom preset saved by me. Then you can go Image > Scale Image : 25% Compare it with the *original*.jpg screenshot.

It's very hard to use them visually. They're of solid orange color instead of striped and very poorly rendered. They are often hard to gauge even when viewed from 20 meters, standing at the takeoff position right next to them. Screenshot location: Biggin Hill aerodrome. Latest OB

I think windsocks are located at every runway, near the starting position. I assume it's set dynamically based on wind direction. Another problem is their very poor rendering.

@lesthegrngo Thanks. I already follow this one

@lesthegrngo Could you please post the link to the main project thread?

@Flappie What are your thoughts on this? Do you need any other information? I realize it's not critical. But it's a huge immersion killing glitch that's present every single time during takeoff spool up.

It's been a while since I've seen such an insidious smoothness killer. I advise anyone to test this, regardless whether you run G-Sync or not. RCtrl+Pause may be enough to see the difference, you can use CapFrameX if you're really suspiscious about this piece of advice. So, here's the story. I'm a fresh G-Sync adept and I've been looking through several G-Sync infored guides. Many of them advise G-Sync+Vsync setup. The caveat is, some guides and commenters point out you should use Vsync On in nVCpl (nVidia Control Panel) and disable the in-game Vsync. So I did that. What a frametime increase! Everything started moving choppy...(ly?). I went back to the old G-Sync+VsyncINGAME setup immediately. TLDR: Use in-game V-sync (as of spring 2024 I also use in-DCS FPS limit of 60) in nVidia: Use 3D application setting To investigate: FPS limit: nVcpl vs in-DCS

I've just noticed I've always had the setting at 100, what the hell. I had it like that both, on my 16 GB config and my current 64 GB config. In both cases I enjoyed buttery smooth performance, ~10 ms frame times. Does slamming the slider all the way to the left make DCS use some default value that is not 100?

I have yet to see a single chimney smoke on the map. Is this just the way it is in the current state of the map? I don't care about cosmetic details like that but the only way for me to visually check the wind direction is to find an aerodrome with a wind sock.

I'll put it on my low priority bug reporting queue. In the meantime, thank you for the contribution! I can't get enough of the Channel sightseeing in F-5E and I'm going to try to turn one of the units into an F-5E and take advantage of the ambience. Too bad there's no INVISIBLE check mark in the mission editor.

OK, I think I got it. With the F5E-CPT-INSTR-02_COLORC clear canopy in place I think the only thing left is the exagerrated HUD glass tint in F5E-CPT-INSTR-02_COLOR , 100% white is 0% tint. I left a little bit of tint. Modified file attached. F5E-CPT-INSTR-02_COLOR - Copy no tint hud mod.7z The F5E-CPT-INSTR-02 you see above, violated with starred pattern, is an odd one. You can put a texture on the HUD using that file, but erasing it doesn't affect the HUD glass in any significant way.
-
@MAXsenna Somehow I evaluated there's a high chance you'd know it @VZ_342 I've been using mods by @Bummer for months. I think his HUDs are not clear but dimmed rather.
-
Have you located a texture file for the HUD glass? I tried painting over several entire files and nothing showed on the HUD.

How is using a years old floor mop to clean fighter aircraft canopies not realistic?
-
No, no, I meant missing asset handling by DCS core. I tried loading the mission without the WW2 assets on purpose. The mission loading simply hangs with no error messages. I'm asking whether anyone knows if it's a standard behaviour in DCS.
-
I tried running the mission without the assets pack installed. DCS simply stopped loading. Shouldn't there be a nice prompt in such cases?

Ditto!

WW2 backers Normandy 1.0 - upgrade to 2.0 or Channel Map
Bucic replied to Bucic's topic in Western Europe 1944-1945
Nevermind, I've just bought The Channel. It's just too good to pass on! Thanks to the trial mode I did several hourls of sightseeing prior and got hooked. Worth every penny, even though I'm going to use it for leisure flying only.
