Imagine what chance that tiny piece of rubber has to change the orientation of the aircraft versus those huge rudders, all your going to do is make the little wheel go sideways and damage it. So IMO not much point keeping NWS on once the rudders have "woken up" due to aerodynamic forces. I turn it off asap, i find it easier to steer a line without over controlling using the rudder. probably around 50kts having made sure I am pointing in reasonable direction by then!

Labels are totally unrealistic, in real life it might be possible to see another aircraft further away than in the sim, but you still have to identify it and work out whether it is a threat. Whilst you are concentrating on one in front of you there could be many others that you miss. With labels on, they all have a big banner saying here I am and Im a bad guy! but Im a fuel truck so you can ignore me but Im a AAA and Im a MiG 29. Im a f riendly truck convoy so whatver you do dont stick that CBU on me. The amount of blue on blue incidents that happen IRL is further evidence if any was needed... I like the glints of light from reflections idea though. Obviously only in the day time.

Glad to help- Hopefully the relevant freqs and navaids in the sim are accurately modeled so we can do some Instrument Approaches using these official charts!

Near Zero Visibility ILS landing
bluepilot76 replied to FOXFIRE TWOONE's topic in DCS: A-10C Warthog
I cant watch the track ATM, but sounds like you did a good job. I tried a couple of 0viz landings a while back and usually ended up off runway with no wheels, then I decided that since it wouldn't be done in real life I could hardly be expected to do it in sim. It would not be done in real life because 200ft cloudbase / 800m visibility is the lower limits for manual ILS landings, although not sure if this is the case in the military. I think it would be a lot easier if the approach lighting systems were in any way realistic, although obviously would not help much in true "zero vis". -
Can the map on the MFD be orientated North?
bluepilot76 replied to Ramstein's topic in DCS: A-10C Warthog
I expect you already know this with your experience, but some might not.... The TAD map is North Up if you use the EXP modes, then you can still change the zoom so although it doesn't follow the aircraft, you can make it big enough that it becomes similar to the default TAD map, and you can move occasionally as your A10 moves off center. EXP is quite a useful mode! Oh sniped by freefall, that will teach me to check my spelling occasionally.. -
I learned mostly just by flying the simple "instant actions" over and over. Occasionally popping into the training mission (Mavericks) to see why I still couldnt lose one off... but guns and dumb bombs and rockets are pretty straight forward. You probably should not expect to be a top gun after you first day though, there is a lot to take onboard, anyway the learning was probably the most fun part of the simulator (for me) so just enjoy the process! One of my favorite bits was, having totally NOT read the manual, sitting in the jet "cold and dark" and trying to get it up and running.

This is true for civilian operations where the calculations are based around 50 feet over the threshold as already described; nice safety margin to avoid undershoots. But I think I will be right in saying that military pilots are aiming a lot closer to the start of the runway than that, ie "on the numbers" I have watched them at my local military base and they are only a few feet up as they cross the threshold. (RAF Tornados)

You can get the Georgian ones if you register on eurocontrol website (free). http://www.ead.eurocontrol.int/eadcms/eadsite/index.php.html Login then go "enter application" from the EAD Basic page. Setup the options as I showed in the screengrab. Have fun! (and you can print them as well)

Resetting your Controllers
bluepilot76 replied to Panzertard's topic in Controller Questions and Bugs
Hi Cichlid, Any kind of back stage editing is way out of my comfort zone, I wouldnt have a clue where to start! I will do what you suggested and rebuild the config from scratch, to be fair its a long time since Ive had to do it so I cant complain. I like to keep everything "stock" as I always think Im going to break something if I go a meddling!. -

Hi Cichlidfan, Thanks for your help! Although its not the news I wanted its not that big a deal i suppose! -
Resetting your Controllers
bluepilot76 replied to Panzertard's topic in Controller Questions and Bugs
Lost axis options in setup? Hi I recently upgraded to 1111. Whilst trying to reconfigure my controls the axis options have disappeared off the list. So, to try and explain better.. Options -> Controls -> Simulation-> axis commands... I have lost the roll, pitch, throttle, yaw options from the list, so I cannot reassign my controller. Strangely they are still there if I look in the free camera and game mode options. Is there a way I can get them back without having to completely wipe my profile and reassign everything else as well? Hope someone can help! Cheers -
The download options show 4 files downloadable with FTP (which is what I always have used) The TOrrent one only shows one, whats the idea there? Meanwhile I have started the torrent. It says 3h45mins remaining...

Well if you go and fly a Piper Seneca through rain on an approach I assure you will you will have visibility issues, not due to discrete "droplets" but a continuous streams of water smearing / flowing off. Its not that pleasent. The A10 is not a fast aircraft and in any case it is capapble to be flown slowly. You can easily be flying an approach at 140 and those are speeds you can easily reach in a piper. I also ask why a 737 has windscreen wipers. I think they are a bit faster than an A10. Obviously at approach speeds it can be worthwhile to have them. Lastly, if I go out and drive my car through any kind of rain at 100mph I will not be brave or stupid enough to do it for long without the wipers on! Even with a slopey windscreen (Audi A4). So my final thought on the subject: the rain smear would be good to be modelled. P.S. Top of the list on YT for "737 approach rain"

In that F18 video it looks like it has actually stopped raining just prior to lining up, so no fresh drops are appearing as he accelerates. I'm not sure there shouldn't be drops appearring as we fly especially in a slow A10.

I agree, they look bad, if ED are going to fix it I hope they fix all of the approach lighting patterns at the same time which are just ridculous collections of lights with no sensible order, except the ones at Batumi that are reasoneably good. Makes ILS to minimums exciting enough though.

U455 thanks for the mission, I see now that you certainly can set hardcore IMC conditions! I must have set the vis wrong, maybe put an extra '0' on it by accident.
-
Maybe I had set the fog up wrong, I thought I had set it to 800 maybe I screwed up somewhere. Vis was definately over 800m. Username 455 can you post your Batumi ILS mission just in case I dont get it figured out?

Yeah the screenshots look ok / good, but FS2004 / FSX users have been upgrading their terriain to this quality and beyond for years. The current DCS terrain is fairly awful in comparison. So is it just a finer mesh with some satellite images draped over, being handled by the same "engine" or is the "engine" going to be doing things better as well to allow this increase in detail to flow smoothly? To me it sounds like the latter, and I certainly hope so!
-
What is EDGE going to bring us? Is it just that the digital terrain model will have more points than the current map and thus considerably nicer - smoother terrain, or is a bigger deal than that?
-
OK, mabe I wil just go back to glancing at the gauge every now and again. My bladder would never allow me to run out of fuel anyway!
-
Perhaps you need to replicate conditions that would get you turbulence, as well as allowing the actual turbulence. So was the wind strong enough? There certainly used to be horrendous turbulence in light winds in Dynamic weather, but I think that might have been fixed. Turbulence should affect smaller aircraft more than larger aircraft. A10 should certainly not be immune. I was a passenger landing in Bergen Norway the other day in a Dash 8. I admit I was slightly crapping myself., and was prettty glad not to be one of the guys/gals up front!

So 300m IS the limit, bit dissapointing if you want to use any of the main airfields down at the coast. Vaziani it is then! Cloud density I had set to 10 which was I presume the worst. Thickness I cant remember but certainly didnt get to the top but I only went up to 4500feet. What about the fog though - surely that should be an effective way of making IMC conditions?
-
Good morning! Last night I wanted to do some instrument approach practice, so I wanted a low cloud base so I might or might not see the runway at about 200 feet / 60m. I was using standard weather. The lowest I could make the cloudbase was 300m So I set the fog to 310m so there was overlap and made visibility 800m. But whenever I broke cloudbase at 300m, the visibility was probably about 3k. Also the sky under the cloud was bright, as if sunshine was getting through, which spoilst things somewhat. Can we not set hardcore IMC conditions? I take it the cloudbase setting is above sea level? I suppose I could fly out of a higher airfield?
