Sense of speed at low altitude... or the lack thereof
pixie replied to pixie's topic in DCS Core Wish List
I have played a little bit with IPD settings and found out the perfect setting. Looking down at my rendered pilot body, there is no awkward sense of being a kid or a giant crammed in a kid's pit. I just feel it's me in a Hornet ! So I guess I'm right in the IPD sweetspot. On a side note, I'm a long time simmer, 35yrs ago I was already simming with an amstrad CPC, so yes, I know about the relation between FOV and perceived speed thx to periphereal vision. But right now i have dropped 2D and track IR, for VR and there is no possible turning back to flat screen. I guess I'm good to cope with my Quest2 narrow FOV for some time. Maybe there is a mod that reduces tree models. As mentioned above, The sense of speed is back when flying over road traffic with proper sized cars... IMO there is something wrong with the trees ^^ -
Sense of speed at low altitude... or the lack thereof
pixie replied to pixie's topic in DCS Core Wish List
You just confirmed what I was suspecting all along. Trees are oversized because they are all represented at max achievable heights, which is a bit unrealistic. I've never thought about proportion issue of enlarged specimen. That's clever and well observed. I think the devs should have sticked with a median size or a gaussian distribution of different sizes. I would happily trade scarcer forests for a little more sense of speed. But that's just me ^^ -
Hello, I'm not sure it's been discussed before, so in advance sorry for digging an old thread. I fly exclusively the mighty Hornet in VR. I happen to really like flying very low altitude, but I find the sense of speed leaves much to be desired when flying over trees. I don't have this impression when flying over cities (Las Vegas is my playground for such dangerous activities), but above the country side, the plane feel slugish to me even at 600+ knots. I suspect the scaling of trees being the culprit, whenever I fly over a road with traffic : cars and trucks are bringing back a correct scale perception, and therefore speed. TLDR : are trees rendered way too big in order to compensate for their low number ? Could be me as well and my very own 3D perception. I have played with the IPD settings to get a proper cocpkpit size. But I sense there is something wrong with the trees which seems definitely too big for me

I have tried Oculus 2 + W11 combination... Had the stuttering issue and overall bad performance on a 3060ti +Ryzen 3600 +32GB VR has become unplayable. Since the 14 days rollback window was expired, I had to Reinstall my PC from scratch in order to go back to W10 I definitely wouldn't recommend

correct as-is Hornet take-off from carrier without catapult
pixie replied to wernst's topic in DCS: F/A-18C
I could be wrong but I believe the rendered 3D model is not used in real time to compute the flight model. This explain why some have flown with folded wings. In the same manner I don't think the damage modeling interaction with FM is based on the plane 3D render. Again, I'm no dev, and this is only a guess. -
correct as-is Hornet take-off from carrier without catapult

The flight Model could be accurate even without wings being graphically rendered. Because you know this is a computer game and wings are not actually interacting with air flow ? Do you ? ^^ -
DCS: F/A-18C Features Roadmap for Early Access
pixie replied to Kate Perederko's topic in DCS: F/A-18C
Seriously guys ? https://www.digitalcombatsimulator.com/en/news/changelog/ We are getting at least one or two updates a month. Could you stop whining for a moment and appreciate the hard work already done ? F/A 18 is already a beautiful sim. There is nothing like DCS sims on the market. It's a class of it's own. And the best thing is, it's getting better every month. Last time I checked, a little bit of gratefulness doesn't kill. -
bump !

To OP, I would definitely suggest the Serpent's Head campaign by Badger. Great scripting, and fantastic learning curve that let you slowly build up your practical knowledge. The first campaign is freely available on DCS website. The follow up Serpent's Head 2 and Rise of the Persian Lion are paying DLC. They are worth every pennies. Super carrier module is recommended and the Syrian Map needed for the 3rd campaign IRC.

Hi Badger ! I have bought your 3rd campaign without thinking twice. Serpent's head 1&2 are so good, this is a no brainer. Really. I'm running DCS through steam, but : Even if Rise of the Persian Lion is activated through DLC management, I stiil cannot see your new campaign yet in the menu. Do I need an open beta version or is it something else ? Any rough ideas when Rise of the Persian Lion will be actually available in the menu ? Cheers

I have begun my journey in VR with a PSVR God, I was so sick ! Even opening the box and smelling the device gave me instant nausea. Then I bought a Quest 2 and spent some short sessions with motion-sickness free games like beat saber or Alyx After a while I was trying some short DCS ans Elite dangerous sessions. A few weeks later I noticed my motion sickness issue was gone for good. The trick is to convince your brain that visually perceived motion contradicting the static feel registered by your inner ear is not the result of poisoning. Motion sickness nausea is an archaic safe guard mechanism that makes you empty your stomach as soon as poisoning symptoms are detected. .Don't despair, motion sickness WILL disappear after some time. Your brain will get used to it one way or another and draw its own conclusion : you're not poisoning yourself, no need to puke/jettison your stomach to survive. .Play as much short sessions as you can. Bail out from your VR goggles as soon as you feel some minor discomfort. Don't force it, never. .You might turn on a fan and point it right to your face. Some says it helps. Again you're tricking your brain with a relative wind coherent with a visually perceived motion hope this helps

Yes, you have to think very very carefully before trying VR. I was perfectly happy with my Hotas and track IR combo. But that was before. I have tried VR, and this is pure heroin for simers. If your body can stand it, and once you're beyond motion sickness. You will be craving. You will most likely hunt a new GPU and happily get scalped. You will try to justify your impulse buy to your friends : "Man, those MFD were so hard to read". And most probably fail. You will also look for the perfect HOTAS combo. Try to justify it. Fail. Buy it anyway.

need track replay Trim issue when landing on super carrier
pixie replied to pixie's topic in Bugs and Problems
yes ! this is exactly what happened to me, a slight trim input of 10ms and the nose pulls up like a "cobra" attempt hopefuly this will be gone with the very last update, DCS is downloading right now -
It took me a while to figure out the coordinate unit thing ° ' " vs ° ' decimal But I finally managed to blow the damned 4th hangar to pieces too. For a F18 newbie driver like me, both your campaigns are fantastic piece of work. It's well written, and I love the way it always puts me out of my confort zone, forcing me to learn new F18 tricks. I'm still in mission 6 and had to learn the hard way how to land on a carrier at night. The learning curve is excellent. I will be happy to purchase your next campaign "Rise of the persian Lions". New adventures in the persian gulf sounds quite promising. Do you have any rough idea when it will be available on steam ? Again, thank you for this great work.

need track replay Trim issue when landing on super carrier
pixie posted a topic in Bugs and Problems
Hi, I'm not too sure if it's a bug or if the problem is located between the HOTAS and the chair. Recently it seems I can't get a proper AOA when landing on the carrier. On my last campaign mission, a correct AOA was impossible to achieve on my last missions (serpent's head 2). As soon as I enter a little trim input, the aircraft is havig a big up'n down woobling. It seems I'm always fighting the FCS and there is no way I can't fly in the E bracket and control my glide rate with the throttle like I did before. I believed my F18 received some small arms damage in the mission so I tried a Supercarrier preset CASE 3 recovery mission, and it was just the same. I'm running 2.7 stable Trimming the aircraft has never been a problem before. I used to put the flight vector right in the middle of the E bracket. hook down, anti skid off, <250 knts, Gear down, flaps down , a little bit of trim to raise the nose and voilà... You all know the drill. But this doesn't work for me anymore and I'm clueless. Has anyone encountered this problem ? -
Pilot body in VR - most underestimated feature in VR or useless?
pixie replied to Rosebud47's topic in Virtual Reality
While flying VR, a pilot body is an essential part of the experience. I didn't realise until I bought the Viper during the last sales. I have flown a few minutes the F16 to get a feel of this new plane, but it was really weird without a a body to project myself into. The experience stopped right there. I will neither return to 2D flat screen nor will I fly VR without a body. -
I have only bought the 3 led thing you are supposed to clip on you headphones. I must say it's better made than the original (which is flimsy and broken). Since it's operated on battery, it's way much better than the original. I have no idea about the reception device but it looks very similar to the genuine trackIR device. Anyway, in the mean time I have tried a Quest2 VR goggles, and I will never go back to track IR despite the lack of details and resolution.

M02, AAR beyond my skills. Am I f****d ?
pixie replied to pixie's topic in F/A-18C Raven One Campaign
Thank you Baltic_dragon ! I really thought AAR was mandatory, I'm glad it's not. I was desperatly trying to refuel behind the tanker until I was running on fumes. What do you mean exactly by "skip it" ? Do I need to initiate some radio coms with the tanker in order to trigger following events ? Any key to press ? Or simply fly in close formation with the tanker for a while and then follow my planned waypoint ? -
Well... everything is in the title. It's the very beginning of the campaign and I'm stuck. Please spare me the usual "learn AAR, you'll be glad you did". I've tried and believe me, I'm nowhere close to AAR. I made some basket contacts by sheer luck and that was 1 or 2 seconds of pure pride, but I can't figure out how to stay connected. I have read everything I could on the subject, watched YT tutorials... Naaah , not for me. The fact is I'm probably too nervous to succeed. Too many unwanted moves. F** it ! I'm no real pilot, and that must be for a reason. I have already wasted too much time trying to refuel on training missions. So what's next ? Do I need to bin this DLC ? Any way I can skip the refueling ? How can I do that ? Thank you for your attention

Glad you took the plunge and enjoyed the experience. I have what is considered a low end specs too (gtx 1070). What helps immensely regarding smoothness is running Oculus Tray Tool and forcing ASW at 30Hz. You can also play with the bit rate tab (named rift link) and try some GPU preset. Hope this helps bringing you some extra fps/smoothness.

Not sure it is of any help since I have a X52 pro, but some of the switches don't work if I am not opening the hotas control panel and the properties/test window before launcing DCS. Might be worth a try.
