  1. If you don't need fancy features such as LED lighting just get the best priced you can get. If your case has good airflow then I would skip the blower style cards such as the founders edition. Also skip the mini ITX case type cards as their smaller size usually means much higher fan speed and more noise. My mate bought a Gigabyte GTX970 in one of these cut down variants and the fan spins up so high it sounds like a blender. I purchased recently a Gainward GTX1070 Phoenix Goes Like Hell Edition because it had a very high factory overclock with very good temps and very low fan noise. And it was 50-80 bucks cheaper here in Australia than any of them other slightly lower factory overclocked cards from Asus, MSI, Gigabyte or EVGA. Negatives of this card were it takes up 2.5 slots, LED implementation is poor and it isn't the nicest looking thing. For the price AUD 670 it was a no brainer. Big improvement over a 970. Normally I will skip a generation of cards between purchase but Pascal provided big gains in terms of speed and efficiency.
  2. I just upgraded to a GTX1070 from a GTX970 which had ran things ok on my 1440p display. Now with the 1070 eye candy has been increased and minimum frames have increased. This is the perfect card for 1440p at 60hz or 100hz refresh rates. Get the 1070 over the older architecture 980Ti. Uses less power, extra 2GB VRAM, and the slightly faster in most tests. Also compared to my old Gigabyte GTX970 G1 Gaming the fans on my 1070 only spin up under load when temps hit 60 C plus. The only argument that may have convinced me to pick up a 980Ti was if it was 30% or less price wise compared to a GTX1070. I snapped up a Gainward GTX1070 Phoenix Goes Like Hell (GLH) edition for AUD 669 here in Australia. It's factory overclock is greater than anything else currently on the market without the price compared to the major names Asus, EVGA, Gigabyte and MSI. Only problem with the Gainward is that it does not look the best and it takes up 2.5 slots.
  3. We also need new clouds which I hope come as part of the 2.5 merge later in the year.
  4. Seasonic is a good brand and I had the original M12 PSU many years ago which served me well with my old Core 2 Duo rig. I can't see anything wrong with your choice. And yes having a decent PSU in particular when overclocking components helps.
  5. Read through this thread and it may solve your issue.
  6. Yep that is a golden oldie photo of the GAU alongside a VW beetle.
  7. Your 970 will not deliver anything near 60 fps at 4k. 1440p would work well with a 970. I would look at widescreen 1440p such as the Acer Predator with G Sync.
  8. Good stuff. I haven't lost the faith.
  9. I was going to suggest exactly that. Let it burn baby. My regret was that I couldn't wait for Sandy Bridge but still my i7-950 is ticking along nicely at near 4.3Ghz, well over it's 3.06Ghz stock and it seems to work well paired with my GTX970.
  10. If you are happy with your bank balance getting a bloody nose all for the sake of claiming the fastest consumer GPU in the world then great and go for it. However I would not be surprised if Nvidia follow same track as in the past and release a 1080Ti which will probably have near the same performance of Titan X in games for 30% less the price of the Titan X. Each to their own.
  11. Fantastic. Downloaded and will print off.
  12. Or Win10. The simple test I do is to change the volume roller on my keyboard and if I see the volume bar overlay the screen in DCS then I know that I have not hit Alt Ent to come out of Windows mode.
  13. Yep. Makes system much more snappy and responsive. Put all your important programs and apps along with operating system on a SSD.
  14. Nvidia are not going to do partner card. As mentioned by Chief1942 you will have to Ge it direct from Nvidia, off the tree so to speak.
  15. Video number 3 is up covering walk around and startup. The walk around with the oculus rift is a fantastic advertisement for VR. Great work Bunyap and highly insightful as always.
  16. Great stuff Bunyap. I will be following your F-5E videos with keen interest as I seek to explore and learn this aircraft. I enjoyed greatly your old series on the Rook SU-25 and I am sure it will be even better with this series. Thank you for your invaluable work. I can sense your enjoyment and passion for aviation in your voice audio. Also thank you for not using any harsh language so my 5 year old son can also watch. Finally my 91 year old grandpa who was a navigator in a Mosquito bomber during WW2 also loves to watch your vids.
  17. Not as hard given that the upgrade to the Caucasus map is free.
  18. Evidence of a very popular module which has got a lot of people excited and some perhaps over excited. Just look how many F-5E videos are up on You Tube in just a week. I for one love this module. But people need to remember that it is in early release and as such there are small bugs that need ironing out. The fundamentals of this aircraft appear true to what I have read and watched. I am very happy with this variant. Sure we could wish for the F-20 Tigershark or a variant that can fire the Maverick. In the end I feel that this variant that we have fits nicely into the DCS World. I have to fight my five year old son to get flying time with it and even my wife said, "that looks like a nice plane" and said that the music sounds like out of Top Gun.
  19. Hi acdelta57, chichlidfan has answered most your questions. 1. As mentioned by cichlidfan, no your older MB is not compatible with DDR4. You need to stick with DDR3. 2. I have always been of the view to not populate all my dim slots. I find it easier to diagnose or find the cause of memory problems with only 2 sticks or in case of my X58 board which runs tri-channel, 3 sticks. My suggestion would be as also suggested by Malefix Rage, use MemTest86+. Also Windows 10 has a memory test feature named Windows Memory Diagnostic though not sure how good it is but perhaps give that a go first. If you do find that you current memory is the cause of your problem then I would purchase 2 x 8 GB sticks. 3. I am not sure if bad RAM can corrupt files. However if I have persistent crashes in a specific game but not in others then yes I would repair or re-install the game to see if that is the cause of the problem. 4. 16GB to 24 GB is a waste of time for DCS and pretty much most games. 16GB is more than enough. What does info CPU Z show on your memory? The SPD tab displays the actual brand and specs of the memory. The Memory tab displays your current operating speed of your memory as set in your MB BIOS. Definitely try to test your memory as already suggested. Hopefully that is your problem. If not then it could by your PSU or motherboard possibly. How old is your PSU? Same age as your 2600k system? Good luck and let us know how you go. :)
  20. Yep I think that would be the better move.
  21. Hi MileHiRyder, My rig as per signature is similar to yours as far as CPU/MB/memory and I also have it overclocked to 4.1Ghz with HT turned off. I previously had a old GTX460 which really struggled in DCS 1.5 at 1440p. Would have also struggled at 1080p. :smilewink: I swapped out my GTX460 1GB card for a GTX970 and it brought significant improvement. My suggestion would first be to look at replacing your GPU with the best that your budget allows and see what gains that brings. Then after that decide when you want to move to a completely new platform such as Skylake. Given that you are looking at a monitor with 21:9, 3440x1440 resolution a 1070 would be a good fit.
  22. Hmm, wondering if it worth grabbing a second GTX970 now that prices should drop even further and set up SLI on my rig for 1440p in DCS World?
  23. Agreed. Same principle applies to the drip drip approach to purchase of components for a new build. Save up and just get everything together. So wait till you get your VR headset and then look at the state of the GPU market at that time. Hopefully prices on the new Nvidia 1080 and 1070 cards fall and AMD will hopefully have it's Polaris cards out on the market also.
  24. The only people that will be jumping from a 980Ti to a 1080 are those with more money than they know what to do with.
  25. G'day Airmage, I have a similar X58 board based system per my sig. I did see some gains moving from 6GB tri-channel RAM to 12GB tri-channel. However I would definitely save some cash to put towards the cheapest SSD that you can get. Even if it is a smaller capacity one to put your operating system on and key applications/games. One final thing I would try overclocking your I7 920. You should be able to attain overclock easily to 3.5 Ghz. I have overclocked my I7-950 to easily up to 4.2 Ghz and have even pushed it as high as 4.3 and a bit. Given you are on a budget overclocking is free assuming you have decent cooling. DCS loves good clock speed so if you can push you 920 up by another 800mhz to 1ghz happy days.
