I agree. It seems more difficult to spot aircraft at medium ranges because of simplistic LOD and lack of shaders at a distance. For instance rhe MiG 15 or F5e turn a flat gray at 1km with no shading or reflection, but eventually turns into a black dot further out. Because of this I find it easier to spot an aircraft at 5km than 1km. I liked the scaling option they had in the open beta (1.5?). It made dogfighting and formation flying more comfortable. You didn’t have to stay zoomed in on an aircraft to keep track of them. I liked that it was a server option as well, so people who think scaling is unrealistic could disable it.

It sounds realistic to keep the Datalink since the aircraft actually has one.

Long Loading in MP
NakedSquirrel replied to NakedSquirrel's topic in Release Version Bugs and Problems (Read only)
It may be related to server population as well. I noticed significant difficulty trying to join blue flag with 40-45 players, but after a freeze the server pop dropped to 20 and I was able to easily load in. I’ll try a cleanup anyways. -
This may be a somewhat of a repeat post about memory issues, but most of these threads are saturated with complaining and conspiracies. When I try to load in MP I tend to have extreme load times 15+ minutes. I inevitability crash from the server and am booted to main screen. Usually when I try to load back in, it will only take a minute or two. My buddies have the same issue, their specs vary. Today, I’ve spent over an hour and a half trying to load into a server. I tried a restart several times. I have 16gb DDR3, but dcs only uses 4-9gb ram. Graphics is a Nvidia 1080 and I usually don’t have issues. CPU is a i5 3.6ghz Dcs is on a SSD I didn’t experience this in earlier beta versions (pre March/April) Usually it only takes two times to load in, one long load and one crash, but today I’ve had major issues trying to load in. Does anyone have any solutions?

Joystick not recognized as USB device

Thanks for that! -
Thanks. I ended up getting the base from Virpil. I didn’t know if the 3D printed gimbal for my broken Warthog would work (surprisingly it worked great!) also there was a sale on the Virpil site, and VKB was out of product till April or May. It was really a toss up. Price wise Virpil was a little cheaper, and it would arrive a sooner than VKB so I went for the t-50 mongoos. I saw what you mention above with the oscillating movement in the all metal stick. It isn’t distracting for me, but I noticed it. The dry clutch looks interesting. Cool design feature! Both sticks look to have amazing construction. I really enjoy the VPC base with a Warthog grip. It feels great and has worked flawlessly so far. I had some issues with the screws. I had to take the base partially apart so I could reverse the direction of the stick. One of the screw heads stripped and I had to drummel the screw head to remove it. I haven’t taken the thing fully apart or replaced any cams yet, but I’m satisfied with the ones that are already in place. The only downside to the t-50 is the lack of base plate, but I was able to construct one that works well. I may properly mount it to my desk in the future. (I think they will release a model with a base plate at some point as well.) Over all I really enjoy the Virpil base. It feels fantastic and the spring tension is easily adjusted. It’s a butter smooth flight experience and was a worth while upgrade.

I have a buddy who is able to hear transmissions on SRS, but is unable to transmit. He sees the green light enable when he presses the mic button, but on our end he isn't transmitting (the freq doesn't turn white). We've tried some basic troubleshooting (reset, control change, volume, input devices), but haven't been able to get his SRS working. Does anyone have any tips?

I'm having issues with my Thrustmaster Throttle. Occasionally, when I unplug the throttle and plug it back into a USB, the USB doesn't recognize it. If I plug it into a new USB port the computer seems to recognize it again as a Thrustmaster throttle (instead of unrecognized USB device). Its a problem I've noticed before, but I didn't think much of it since it has only happened occasionally. But now... I am running out of USB ports, and do not know how to reset them so that they can recognize the throttle. Has anyone had a similar issue and found a solution?

The PFM is supposivly under development. There is no ETA but last I read it’s in progress. Why doesn’t the dcs mig have datalink like the SU27. Is it outside of its capabilities?

Shapeways 3d Printed I finally got my 3d printed gimbal in the Hog It took some sanding and filing, but it works like new. https://imgur.com/a/vxE98 All greased up and ready to go! -
Accurate 3D models of Warthog gimbals

Ah thanks, I thought the link was dead, I didn't realize I had to log in. -
How did you break the cam? Looking at the internals of the base it looked like it was mostly, if not entirely, metal construction. The Warthog seemed like a great buy, but I had no idea how weak the internals were. I wasn't abusive to my Warthog, but after 3 years of regular use, mounting and unmounting, the plastic gimbal finally snapped. I've been looking at VKB and Virpil for a possible replacement to the fragile TM Warthog base. I may get an extra grip as a backup, but I really enjoy feel of the warthog. I'm not sure about VKB since it looks like there are a few internal plastic parts. Also the warthog adapter looks to be all plastic, which... don't get me wrong, I don't think everything has to be made of metal, but considering the history of my warthog, I'm primarily concerned with durability. Virpil seems to look all metal, but if you're breaking it by simply replacing the cams? That seems oddly fragile, unless you were banging at it with a hammer? Either way I couldn't really afford to replace a Virpil or VKB system if they break down in a year or two. :( I was hoping VKB or Virpil would have a base that was redundantly reliable and durable. Something that could last a nuclear war! My most reliable stick thus far has been the CH Fighterstick, which has been kicked, tripped over, dropped, and remained solid through all sorts of abuse. I could chuck it down the stairs every morning and still plug it in to have it work flawlessly (Not that I ever plan to do that). The aspects I don't really like are somewhat trivial. I don't like the mechanical deadzone, and it's not quite the right design to mount between your legs (giggity) like I've grown used to with the TM Warthog. The plastic stick and buttons aren't as satisfying as a the TM warthog, but damn, I'd have to be creative to break my CH stick. So, in the long term, how durable would you consider VKB and Virpil's construction to be?

Accurate 3D models of Warthog gimbals

Does anyone have the CAD file for the gimbal (articulation sphere) that they could pm me? My gimbal also broke. I was looking on shapeways but they do not have the design. I’m curious. Will their plastic be rugged enough? -
Thanks. I did a few tests on my end. I guess you can basically go bananas on static objects. I was able to place almost 3000 with no noticeable performance hit in game (The f10 map suffered a bit, but otherwise seemed pretty stable). I'm toying around with placing a few active units mixed with "dummy" static ones to make the map look a bit more busy.
-
I'm hoping someone with a bit of experience hosting MP missions can help me answer a few questions. As far as performance goes... is there much of a difference between static and active ground units? I'm trying to make a mission as performance friendly as possible, as not to cause undo lag. I realize lots of moving ground units can cause lag and issues in multiplayer, but does an active ground unit alone in the forest cause more performance issues than a lone static unit? Also, am I able to go bananas placing static objects on the map, or should I be conservative with them? Does anyone have a rough estimate of how much content you can have on the map? (As far as AI planes, ground units, ect?)

Depends on the aircraft obviously a A-10C isn’t as bad, but the some of the smaller aircraft like the MiG or Mirage blend in with the background. I’ve tried resolutions between 1080p and 4K

Some Comparison Shots of the Free Caucasus Update
NakedSquirrel replied to NineLine's topic in DCS 2.9
Are the ground textures going to be updated? The trees look fantastic, but there are still 2d buildings painted on the ground in that flyover. -
I agree. Even on a flatscreen monitor. It seems like there is a zone between 500m - 1000m that aircraft just vanish from view, even when zoomed in to the max. I have to zoom out all the way and wait for them to become a pixel again to have a chance to see them. I really liked the customizable model enlargement feature. It made dogfighting more comfortable and it was much easier to keep track of wingmen. It also allowed you to reasonably play in VR. Currently I have A hard time finding my wingman at 500m even though I know almost exactly where he is in relation to me.
-
The mirage is faster. Keep your distance and work with your wingman to bad and drag.

Also being worked on for the F14 if you check Heatblur's facebook https://www.facebook.com/heatblur/photos/a.683612385159716.1073741828.683574075163547/795745373946416/?type=3&theater

I could have sworn there was a way to give AI vehicles unlimited ammo in a checkbox or something... The "fire at point" command for a waypoint seems like it might do the trick for this sort of thing. I'm a little annoyed that the units don't actually shoot anywhere in the radius (they shoot directly at the point even when you give a radius.) so I need to cue or manipulate waypoints... so they look a little more convincing and shoot at more than one spot. I had trouble getting the units to re-arm. Is there a scripting function you have to add to the ural?
-
Did you find a script to keep a group dead after players start engaging? The trouble is, even on low skill, firefights only last a few minutes. (I also try my best not to move ground units, because it murders MP servers.)
