Just so you know, at age 75 I will tell you that life is like a roll of toilet paper. The closer you get to the end, the faster it goes.:smilewink: I really enjoy the A-10C and have ordered the Fa-18. Compared to sims when I first started back in the 90's things have become almost surreal.

Unveiling the VKB TECS Throttle Control System
Chief1942 replied to UIV's topic in VKB-SIM Flight Gear
Just hope my Thrustmaster WH lasts until you bring this to market. -
Would be nice.... ..but how powerful of a machine would I have to invest in to be able to run all that eye candy?:music_whistling:

THIS is a complement!! That GA would think so highly of your work is a real testament to how well you have done. Tough to improve on all his work, but you are right up there!:smartass: Keep it up and give us more.

[Official] SimShaker for Aviators
Chief1942 replied to f4l0's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
Hey, Thanks. Halloween just happens to be my birthday and I appreciate the gift:thumbup:. Looking forward to all the new enhancements. -
My point was that ED simply cannot give us everything we desire and still have the sim playable on most hardware today. And VR is even a greater challenge. With my specs clearly stated in my signature, I can run things pretty much on "high" settings, but even my system is reaching the point where I am looking forward to the merge when the sim is supposed to be more "optimised". Only time will tell for that issue, but there is really a limit to just how much "eye candy" can be implemented without finding yourself viewing a slideshow. One need only look at the post regarding "performance" issues currently on the 3 different releases. Heck, I'll gladly take all ED can give us in the form of "eye candy" but I prefer it not be at the expense of FPS. No offense. That's simply my one person view.

Just updated my GPU driver to the latest release 388.00 and it appears it has given me about 5 FPS:thumbup: more in the Normandy Map. Not sure if it is the direct result of the drivers as I am always experimenting with different settings trying to get the FPS up in the Normandy map so may just be a placebo effect.:music_whistling: One thing I can say is that the new drivers are NOT giving me the types of issues that in the past have always caused me to revert back to earlier drivers. Might try them and see how your milage varies. So many different setups it's hard to say what works for one will work for others.:pilotfly:

I don't believe we can have ALL the nice features everyone desires and then NOT have a significant effect on FPS. There is no free lunch and until such time as our hardware is able to provide the power + to achieve acceptable FPS, I fear we simply cannot have it all.

I agree with the post above. Although a remarkable departure from a monitor, VR is not quite there yet. Even with all its supporters, even THEY are always talking about how to overcome the issues current VR HMD's have. If that doesn't throw up the red flag, nothing will. I do believe I will stay with my tried and true approach....ie: Be very leery of first generation technology. Patience will reward you.

Your choice. I think most of us struggle with the kind of decision you have before you . Just how much $$$$ is it worth to us to have DCS run at it's max capability? Certainly it comes down to individual, personal circumstances and one shoe does NOT fit all for various reasons. For those that have been dabbling in flight sims for many years, we cannot have missed the ever changing need for more "state of the art" equipment as the developers begin making ever more use of the latest technology. That alone pretty much forces one into upgrading just to be able to enjoy their favorite pastime. One decision, and you are bumping up against that, is do I bite the $$$ and get onboard with the obvious trend (in your case screen resolution) or stick with the older tech until it simply won't work any more. Only you have the answer to that conundrum, and I wish you luck. I have been fortunate to be able to pretty much stay way ahead of the "minimum requirements" to run DCS but in doing so I could probably have paid off the National Debt :music_whistling:with what it costs to do so. And it is never ending it seems:(. And if ED DOES give us all that folks are asking via the "Wishlist", I will be looking at upgrading much of my equipment as well very soon. Good luck.

Cockpit lighting/hud glass 2.1 update
Chief1942 replied to Gunny Highway's topic in Bugs and Problems
This is the way to update!! Unfortunately, the auto update seems to come and go with the various updates, but it seems to work as advertised if used as recommended in this post. Also there is the DCS Updater by Skate Zilla that works on many levels. You might try that. -
Problem with DCS Updater
Chief1942 replied to Red Squirrel's topic in Release Version Bugs and Problems (Read only)
If it was me I would delete those folders on your desktop and then download Skate Zilla's DCS Updater Utility. As with anything, read the instructions. I appreciate that it is not an official ED app, but it has certainly made my life easier with updates, repairs, and cleaning things up. I owe him a great debt as I often struggled with trying to stay current with all the updates and changes. After much frustration, I actually gave up on JSGME and the use of any mods. I'll wait for the "merge" and then see where we go. Good luck! -
I noticed when zooming in on the M1 Garand the US soldier is carrying, one can actually read the MFG (H&R)and serial number. Talk about detail!!

You did what you could. Thanks for your fix to the dark spots. It helped a lot until ED fixed it. As you stated, they introduced another issue, but feel certain they will address that as well. They have a lot on their plate. Doesn't take away from your jumping in to find a quick fix for the previous problem. We are grateful to you for that.

error in post You probably already caught this but you have two New Mexico F-16's and referred to them in the post as "AZ ANG 188th Roadrunners". Great skins! All of them. Thanks.

Created a mission with the P-51 using HVARS against 4 German tanks. Have lost track of the number of times I've repeated the mission trying to find the right formula ( get CLOSE and hit them in the rear) against these panzers. Beginning to be more successful but have to be real close before letting go the rockets and have taken quite a few rounds in the plane from the tanks, not counting the number of times I didn't clear the trees. Been a hoot and I'm certain ED will make it better as they progress.

Waited awhile before throwing my thanks to ED in as so many have, Wasn't sure at first if I was going to be able to get it to run satisfactorily but like any new endeavor, it takes some tinkering to get things running as well as can be expected in an Alpha release. I have to keep reminding myself that it IS Alpha and not even close to Beta release yet. Both NTTR and Normandy are simply amazing and it boggles the mind to think what DCSW is going to be as ED fine tunes it. Happy days panzer busting in Normandy with the P-51 and rockets.

[REPORTED] weird artefacts on p-51 screen after install new update
Chief1942 replied to crousti's topic in Bugs and Problems
Thanks! That took care of my problem. I know that the original file will be restored with the next update to 2.1, but hopefully ED will have their fix for the issue. -
[REPORTED] weird artefacts on p-51 screen after install new update
Chief1942 replied to crousti's topic in Bugs and Problems
Yes, it appears this came with the 2.1 upgrade. I have it in both Nevada map and Normandy map, In light of all the good things with these new maps, I can wait for ED to address the issue. Pretty certain they are aware of it by now. A lot on their plate as might be imagined what with all the issues a lot of people are having. -
Hey guys, thanks for this discussion. As one who knows squat about programming, just being involved with DCSW as it undergoes its development has given me some great insight for the complexity of what we "end users" often take for granted. Mainly I appreciate all the back and forth between those that do have some related experience in all this. It helps me understand a lot that used to be waaaay over my head. Was just commenting to the wife the other day about just how amazingly far this very small niche in the PC world has come from the days of the 90's when I first got into flight sims. Day and night! One other thing that has become all too obvious is the limited (very) number of studios that are even producing the type of stuff that we so enjoy. That limitation also extends to the hardware (sticks, throttles, etc) we need for that "immersion". Not trying to be a ED fan-boy, but if some of the impatient ones know of another place to turn for this type of offering/effort, I'm willing to go there and see what they have that's better. In my recent experience, there simply aren't any. Stay the course ED!!

What aircraft are you going to be flying in normandy and why ?
Chief1942 replied to silenteye's topic in DCS: Normandy 1944
I have the FW-190, the Me-109, the P-51, and since I pre-ordered the Normandy map and asset pack, it only seemed right I acquire the Spitfire. Now I have all the aircraft modules that I deem appropriate to the theater and I will probably be pushing up daisies before I get proficient at all of those planes, if ever. So, bring on Normandy and let the skies rock and roll. -
Just wanted to give Andre and his crew another "job well done". I unfortunately experienced the loss of "pi 13" in the DIN connector and was thinking about asking Andre how I might purchase just the controller for the seat. On going to his website, I see this video for fixing the "pin 13" issue. Watched the video, followed the instructions and problem solved. What a great bunch that they even help us klutz's when we break something. Thanks Andre and crew.

Small characters and letters in high resolution (5K)
Chief1942 replied to mark2's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
^ Yep. I have a 4k and that is the mod I depend upon. Works well via JSGME. I am hoping at some point ED gets around to proper scaling of fonts based upon screen res. I know that have much on their plates but have been dealing with this for a long time now. -
Windows 10 Creators Edition ?
Chief1942 replied to Anatoli-Kagari9's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
Tried it and had same issues I had with the Anniversary Update. The Task bar ceases to function, apps are either very slow opening or don't open at all. Reverted back to my original Win10 install. -
Yes, it's not "exactly" the Hawk, but interesting none the less in light of who builds the plane. http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2017/04/04/navy-instructor-pilots-refusing-to-fly-over-safety-concerns-pences-son-affected.html It does say in the article that they are having similar issues in other aircraft (FA-18 Hornets). I suspect Ellis and the guys at VEAO could locate the source of the problem and fix it in short order. Shouldn't take the Navy 6 years to get to the bottom of something so critical.
