  1. Slightly off topic, but since the data cartridge seems to be a hot topic: does anyone know anything about the real world implementation of the data cartridge? Which type of storage media was used etc.? The main software of the CK37 seems to be stored in magnetic core memory, but that's not a viable solution for something that has to be re-programmable like the data cartridges. Did they use regular magnetic storage (tape/disc) or replaceable OTP PROMs? Or something completely different?
  2. Something related to the HUD. The manual says it's "strömställare slav SI", which seems to select between navigation and targeting modes on the HUD/SI (SI = siktlinjeindikator; "line-of-slght indicator"). Edit: it engages/disengages the LÅGNAV mode, which is a low altitude (<100m) mode that de-cluters the HUD.
  3. Ok, now I just have to do like Cartman in South Park and freeze myself and ask someone to thaw me back up when 2.5 and Normandy is released.
  4. DCS updates always* come in the afternoon (15-18-ish CET), so there's no reason to wear out your F5-button just yet... *) with the odd exception
  5. The medical term for this is Viggdrawal. Seems to be quite common these days.
  6. I'll have a go at it. I can see if I get the time to fire up the virtual paint booth during the weekend.
  7. Most English speaking people seem to think it's pronounced "Meschersmitt" as well, so i wouldn't take too much notice of their lack of German language skills.
  8. As the great Stanhope once said: "I can never be funnier than farts".
  9. I think roadside speed cameras would work well for that purpose (at least if they were radar based and not based on sensors in the road as is the norm these days).
  10. In the early versions you could slam the fuel lever open, but after simulated engine damage was added you need to do it quite slowly.
  11. Probably OT, but it's mostly due to the fuel injector and combustor can design in the J47. Apparently the RR Nene (which the Klimov VK-1 was derived from) was able to produce a comparable(-ish; approximately 16% less) thrust with a less sooty combustor design than the J47.
  12. Great video :) And the missions look fun as well. Hope they'll be available sooner or later.
  13. That's correct. It's probably best to make a JSGME compatible mod out of it for easy reinstallation.
  14. Well, I guess you could always edit the description.lua and fly the Viggen for Norway instead :P (unless you're still angry about the whole Karl XII incident)
  15. Confirmed. However, you could just find the sound files and overwrite the Russian commands with the English ones. I don't think sound files are checked in the integrity check (at least that's the case with the Bf109 sounds I'm using), so it should work for MP as well.
  16. The post-match Viggen airshow/demo starts at approximately 1h, 57m.
  17. Thanks for the update, and keep up the good work!

  19. TILS is not compatible with ILS. TILS is a Ku-band (15-ish GHz IIRC) system with two sweeping antennae that transmit pulse coded signals to the aircraft, while ILS is a VHF/UHF (localizer = 108,1-111,95MHz, glide path = 329,15-335MHz) based system using CSB (Carrier and Side Bands; DSB in normal radio nomenclature) and SBO (Side Band Only; DSB-SC) signals to create space modulated AM waveforms that the aricraft detect (the aircraft receivers detect the difference in modulation depth (DDM) between the demodulated 90 and 150Hz LF tones, and generates fly right/left and up/down commands to the cockpit display). Very simplified, you could imagine that the TILS transmitter transmits morse code dashes ("-") when the antenna is pointing in one direction (for instance below the nominal glide path angle), and dots (".") when the antenna is pointing above the glide path. This will give you fly up/down indications similar to what you get from the DDM detection in the ILS receiver. The same goes for the offset localizer portion of the system.
  20. The propellants used in the ammunition is a major factor. The Russian ammo (Barnaul) I've shot in my 30-06 K98k produces a huge muzzle flash (flames 20-30cm out of the barrel), while similar loads from GFL, Norma and PPU barely have any noticeable muzzle flash at all. I've seen similar results with with old (1950s) Norwegian 9x19, which is a mini-flamethrower compared to modern NATO spec 9mm.
  21. Access to classified systems is always something you need to work around in some way or another. The trick is to make believable approximations of the systems without revealing sensitive or classified data. That's the way it's done with the TGP, RWR, jammer and DSMS in the A-10C (and most likely also the upcoming F/A-18C).
  22. As a rule of thumb, if it's not in a newsletter, this monday's AMA, in the Steam ID leak or announced officially, those rumours are, well, just runours. Speaking of rumours, this video ED posted a year and a half ago is a bit interesting. It may just be an example of how to use the terrain editor, or perhaps part of something that never went any further, but I find it interesting nonetheless:
  23. [rant] Does the soundtrack really matter? At all? I know I've said this before, but I was unaware that there was such a thing before I saw someone complaining about something soundtrack related either on the forums or on FB. It must be a gut reaction from the terrible background noise in LOMAC, but the first thing I do after reinstalling DCS is to mute the damn music. If people need some background music while messing around in the mission editor, why not use Spotify or something similar? [/rant]
