Bloody oath it was. It's always fascinating to read about things like this that happened in the cold war. I'm impressed with the SH37 throwing that kind of maneveur at that altitude, probably more surprised that the Sukhoi followed him through! :joystick: For military personal during the Cold War it must of been a constant simmering tension, especially for those who would be in an immediate frontline. Leatherneck, please just release the Viggen already lol

I would love to see a Mig-29 PFM - as soon as I saw the banner I headed here to see if something had been announced..

You Sir, are a genius! What could possibly go wrong!!?!?!? :D In all seriousness I would love to build something like this as well, going to keep an eye on this thread with some interest.

Can the AIM-54 take down fighter aircraft
Grundar replied to Coyote Duster's topic in DCS: F-14A & B
Didn't feel like the appropriate word when I was typing it but couldn't come up with a better word that sort of covered all the misdirection. Appreciation the correction though. Also, going to have a look at that book too lunaticfringe, always interested about espionage stuff (mainly because of how wonderfully complex some of the schemes seem and scarily enough, how simple many are). -
Well with the P-40 being modeled the a potential "China/Burma" map and these little hints, we could be seeing A6M's. Of course the Flying Tigers only flew P-40b's and e's, but still, a bloke can dream :P Could be a Ki-27 perhaps or Ki-43?..

Have to be careful there or it'll take your breath away. Maybe Jester AI will incorporate a hand gesture system - for the mundane; like signalling radio frequency/channel to a wingman or for flipping the bird to pesky Mig-28's.

Can the AIM-54 take down fighter aircraft
Grundar replied to Coyote Duster's topic in DCS: F-14A & B
Many a million has been spent on producing aircraft to counter aircraft with near mythical ability - the art of obfuscation is very much alive within military aircraft production. Always make your aircraft seem invincible, be a little vague on BVR capability and let the opposition expend dollars on trying to counter. Of course it all then becomes a game of counter-counter measures. Not to mention the risk of the opposition hitting on a goldmine of an aircraft that could counter what you misrepresented and is now much, MUCH better than the aircraft you have. Counter-intelligence is a complicated affair.:helpsmilie: -
Loved the original Flanker, like many here, got a demo on a PC magazine cover then rushed out and purchased the full version. Flanker 2.0 was beautiful and 2.5 even more so, loved every second of them - much like I love playing DCS now - especially the Flanker and the WW2 birds.

DCS A-10C SP Campaign - Future DLC Announcement
Grundar replied to Ranger79's topic in A-10C Operation Piercing Fury Campaign
Gotta admit I love all these new campaigns heading our way, I love a good single player experience for my flight sims so I can just enjoy the aircraft for what it is. Adding multiplayer stuff is just the icing on the cake! -
An F-14 home pit would be sensational.... .. could possibly also lead to divorce though :P

Can the AIM-54 take down fighter aircraft
Grundar replied to Coyote Duster's topic in DCS: F-14A & B
Some great info here as always. Besides the whole aspect of the AIM-54's capability to kill a fighter sized target - info from Bio is always great considering he was a F-14 RIO and the Phoenix was a "RIO missile". He is quite admiring of it's capability. Regardless of that, launching an AIM-54 would provoke a response from a threatened target pretty quickly I imagine *if detected* and this may result in the further exposure of the enemy - ie ECM/counter measure use etc.. which would expose the aircraft to other aircraft/weapons/radars out there. I clearly have no idea what F-14 BVR combat doctrine would be :P but I imagine that AIM-54 wouldn't be alone if in Sparrow range or if the F-14 had a friend, and they never flew alone. -
We appreciate LNS' hard work  Most of us are very eagerly awaiting the Viggen, some very much impatiently so. Maybe the highly impatient have never had to really wait for something before? *shrug* Maybe they are just very excited by it and are overly eager. Patience is a virtue, not to mention much less stressful :)

[Breaking] USN Blue Angels / USAF Thunderbirds Crashes
Grundar replied to SkateZilla's topic in Military and Aviation
Brings the reminder home that these aircraft can be all kinds of dangerous for aircrew even in times of peace. The pilot who stayed with his craft to avoid civilian casualties was noble and heroic, plain and simple - in that moment he made a choice knowing the probable cost. -
MiG-28 skins, very nice, the F-5 will compliment the F-14 experience nicely (or vice versa if the F-5 is your weapon of choice). Also.. Tornado...HMMMMMMMMMMM.. IDS please!

Looking forward to it :) I own F-86 but not MiG-15 yet so I'm hoping there are no compatibility problems as such. It is a busy time for ED though there is a lot going on - still would like to see this campaign come out!

The Draken is gorgeous. -
I really enjoyed Jerry Pooks' book RAF Harrier Ground Attack Falklands; regarding the GR3's in the Falklands. He is quite bitter towards the Navy Command though and that aspect of it really is prominent throughout the book. That book would of been truly fantastic with less Navy Command bashing and more on his story telling - which when he does it is really good. I did enjoy Sharkey's Falklands book as well, Sharkey isn't backward on coming forward though, especially in regards to his involvement with the Sea Harrier and his derision of the Hermes flight operations with the Sea Harrier (in particular with Naval Command) - something that Pooks' book mirrors I need to pick up Morgan's book, I remember reading a story of his in an old aviation magazine here in Australia in the early 90's - Take Off (it's also where I read about Saburo Sakai).

Beautiful images Robban. +rep to you. It's a beautiful looking bird, I really like it's appearance. -
:D Absolutely true! When I was a young child $50 would of been an absolute fortune. Now days as a "grown" male $50 isn't much but at least I still want to spend it on the same things ;) games and lollies

SW Cool I believe is linked to the SW seeker head which of course cools itself prior to launch to aid in detection of heat signature. The AIM-9L used Argon Gas to cool itself. 5000psi is the pressure of the Argon so it can be used for multiple coolings, once it drops below 2500-3000 I beleive it is much less effective. I believe that these AIM-9's required cooling to be activated by the launching craft (ie this F-14 in this case). Once the missile was cold I believe the light went off again (or maybe it only lit when it had achieved the cold required). Edit: Beaten by Blacklion! :P 2nd Edit: By about 1.5hrs >_> lol should of read the reply first >_<

Yep F-111's using the TF-30's were also destroyed when retired to prevent Iran retrieving parts/tech from them to aid in upkeep of their F-14's (There were also F-111's destroyed as they were part of a the inventory the US told the Soviet Union would be destroyed in their nuclear proliferation agreements - the remaining Australian F-111C's were either placed in museums or buried - cheaper than scrapping them).
