As the title says, which DCS module has the best flight model? The question should not be interpreted as in "the most realistic" (that's kind of hard to judge for most of us) but instead which module you think feels the best in the air and is most enjoyable to fly. I only fly fixed wing aircraft so my choice will be limited to those. Personally I have the Mig-15Bis on first place. I just bought the module and I'm amazed with how nice it flies. It has a very nice inertia and doesn't feel too light footed. It also feels very nice on take-off and landing. Plus, if you don't handle her with care she will bite back. Other nice flying aircraft are F-5E, Mig-21Bis and F-86F.

Interesting, and not the reaction one is used to when using the flaps. Good to know though that everything's in order. I did notice that the plane felt alot better taking off now than it did when I bought it which apparently is linked to changes in the flight model.
-
I was flying straight and perfectly trimmed with flaps down on an approach when I decided to see what happened if I put the flaps in the up position. To my surprise the nose lifted. Shouldn't the flaps create more lift when in the down position than in the up position?

The F-5E module has one of the best feeling flight models in DCS. I do think that a curvature of 20-25 is needed to take away the apparent light weight feel. Although, with the short throw sticks that most of us use, I think practically all modules need atleast 15 in curvature to behave more realistically. Either way, the sensation of flight is very good with the F-5E. I also really like the effects when pulling high Gs: the visible wing flex, the shaking and the cool rumbling noise. It adds alot to the experience and I also remember liking the F-5E best in VR when I borrowed the Vive from work over a weekend. All in all a very good module, and a good complement to the A-10C when you want to fly something lighter and more nimble.

I don't think that would make sense to focus on. What the MiG-21 needs is content, content, content (as in campaigns and missions). Only then will the module be more attractive to potential buyers. I think many developers, including ED themselves, need to re-think their strategy. Pretty soon we will have ALOT of airplanes (several really good ones in the pipeline), but we still have very little good content for many modules. All developers need to shift their main focus to content creation in the future (both maps and campaigns). Great content will lift DCS to awesomeness, not another 10-20 aircraft modules.

Thanks, will check it out. At the moment though it looks as if I will be spending more time in the F-5E instead. It's also a great module and it seems to have more good content (a bit strange since it's alot newer than the MiG-21).

I've just decided to spend some more time again with the MiG-21. It still has the most awesome cockpit in DCS, still feels the most "alive" in the air, and has that certain nostalgic feel to it that no other module can compete with. So naturally I want to scout for good content. After playing "The enemy within" and also the campaign for the M-2000C, the stock campaign for the MiG-21 just doesn't cut it. What do you recommend? Is there any good user made campaigns and single missions? Ideally I'm looking for something truly immersive with voice overs and engaging content, but I suspect that may not exist (atleast today)...

Of course no one knows when next gen VR will hit the market, but I would be very surprised if we don't see it latest Q1 2018. Then it will be around two years since gen 1 was released. We have also already seen a substantial price cut for the Oculus Rift which may very well be a planned half cycle price drop.
-
So for the sceptics, seems like the marketing was close enough. 1080Ti vs. 1080: 32% up in 4K 1080Ti vs. 980Ti: 74% up in 4K http://www.anandtech.com/show/11180/the-nvidia-geforce-gtx-1080-ti-review/17 This will be an important performance increase for VR (both this gen and next) assuming DCS can utilize it in 2.5. Assuming next gen VR is here within one year from now this will more or less be the best card we will have. Maybe the "1180" will release Q1 2018 but I don't expect it to beat the 1080Ti by that much.

Am I crazy? Is the A-10C learning curve too steep for first plane?
Fred00 replied to Burgo38's topic in DCS: A-10C Warthog
I think it's perfectly fine to start with the A-10C. Sure, there are lots of systems to learn, but it's just a matter of grinding the tutorials and Youtube videos. Those will teach you the most important stuff. Once you know the systems pretty well the A-10C is one of the easiest aircraft to fly. It's super easy to land and it's quite simple to employ in a combant situation since the systems make it easier both to find the targets and hit them. Navigation is also simple with the A-10C compared to older aircraft with Tacan and RSBN etc. -
About 500 km/h. No, this is not occuring when deploying the gear, though I believe I had the gear deployed at the time. This is not related to trim or the extra lift generated by the flaps. These are very violent throws in pitch (like 15 degrees AOA in a split second at 500 km/h).
-
I have experienced violent throws i pitch several times, for (as it appears) no reason. It seems to happen when setting up for landing, and always seems to happen when decreasing thrust. For example I'm flying at about 500 km/h level at 500m and decrease the thrust and all of a sudden the nose pitches up violently to almost 15 degrees AOA. I have also experienced violent nose down, where the nose is pitched very quickly into the ground. It is a very weird behavior that has never happened on any other aircraft. Anyone else experienced this?

Regarding performance compared to other modules I think that it's not solely an optimization issue. The Mig-21 and the Viggen are probably the most demanding cockpits in DCS when it comes to the detail rendered. Such graphical fidelity will always be more taxing on a computer than simpler cockpits.

Just got it to work, but I don't know why. It just suddenly worked. Yesterday I tested a curvature of +100, but got no difference in flight. Today when I tested it was extremely sluggish at +100 (like it should). This may be something that LNS have to look at. I did exactly the same today as yesterday. Also, I have had the same problem as possumkiller in this thread. That is, the axis settings can't be saved (you can't click "OK" to save them). On a positive note, the Viggen handles beautifully with some curvature applied.
-
They are saved for me (in the sense that the sliders are still where I left them when I re-enter the axis tune), but there seems to be zero difference in how the plane react.
-
Okay, I've just come to the conclusion that the curvature settings don't seem to do anything for the Viggen at the moment. I have created a new thread about this. Now I understand why the plane still felt nervous with +35 in curvature... Having this fixed will mean a lot for us who feel that the Viggen is too sensitive right now.
-
I just found out that the curvature settings for the joystick X and Y axis don't seem to work at all. I've tested both +100 and -100 and it doesn't seem to do anything. Getting this fixed would be a huge deal for several of us that feel that the FM is a bit on the sensitive side.
-
Thanks for the reply. The sensitivity is indeed greater below 350 km/h, but it still feels way too sensitive above 350 km/h too. Obviously I haven't been in a real Viggen, but it feels a bit artificial and does not exhibit the precision that I thought it should have. Maybe the input response is technically correct, but has to be tuned to the short joystick throw that we have compared to the real thing? I have to say though that the Mig-21 is the best feeling module in DCS flight model wise, so that is why I'm a little surprised by the feel of flying the Viggen. But again, I may be completely wrong about all this.
-
Actually I don't know. I set up a runway start in the mission editor to just do a free flight. Is SPAK on by default when doing a runway start?
-
I did a quick test flight of the Viggen yesterday (tough to find the time with a one week old baby in the house). However, I found the flight model a bit strange. Particularly it feels very sensitive to pitch input. It's easy to get an up-and-down bouncing right after take-off, but also in flight it feels very sensitive. I tried to apply a curvature of 25 and a little dead zone, but it still feels extremely sensitive. Switching over to the Mig-21 or M-2000C the difference is night and day. Has anyone else noticed this? Like with the Mig-21 I assume that the FM is a work in progress and may change drastically (like the Mig has several times).

** DCS: AJS-37 WIP Pre-Release Manual Released! **
Fred00 replied to Cobra847's topic in DCS: AJS37 Viggen
This is great! Much fun reading ahead. :-) A question: Is that pictures from the real-life Viggen manual that you've gotten permission to use? I'm thinking of the cockpit layout pictures. -
As Art-J says there is an english cockpit and I would highly recommend it. I've never used anything else myself.
-
That was it, thanks for the help!

I'm having a bit of trouble with countermeasures. Yesterday I ran mission 2 in the campaign, but I couldn't release any flares. I had the countermeasure dispenser on and I hit the "panic release" button but nothing happened. However, the same button works in the free flight instant action mission. What am I doing wrong?

I also think that content should be the main focus of developers in the future. Within a couple of years we will have many different modules that should suite all tastes. We will soon have the AJS-37 Viggen, and later the F-18 and F-14 among with others. I feel that it would be more interesting if DCS evolved with new theaters and campaigns than just more modules. I'm not saying that module development should come to a complete halt. I'm just saying that the greatness of DCS will not depend on if we get 10 or 20 new modules, but instead new great content.
