dcs 2 is amazing :)

LOL well we have to talk about something, or we need more clues :)

Komodo sim is probably the best if you fly mostly rotary wing, they do the whole set up, stick, collective, and rudder pedals:- http://www.komodosimulations.co.uk/ I haven't used them myself but I've heard very good things about them.

I can see the F-117 Nighthawk working pretty well as an FC3 type module actually. In DCS, we currently have no stealth planes, and only one SEAD capable Su-25T. So I think it would fit quiet well. I'd easily pay $10 for it (or however much the F-15C costs these days). It'd be fun to fly right into the hotzone at night and drop a few LGB's and fly out again, as a way to make the first strike in a new war. It would certainly be novel anyway.

It's a big download for sure, but it's fairly common these days even that games on steam are 20-40gb. Surely a PC that is able to run DCS 2.0 smoothly these days would have a hard drive equally able to hold 26gb

TrackIR will make a very big difference to how you play (assuming you aren't getting ready for a VR Helmet such as the oculus rift or HTC Vive). If you fly the A-10C a lot, then the Warthog HOTAS is a must. It's the best off-the-shelf HOTAS that exists, and it's easily worth the premium price, for flying almost any aircraft (it's fine for helicopters but there are better options too). Pedals vary in quality (and price) just as much as the HOTAS's do. You don't really need anything too fancy pedals wise for the A-10C because it's an easy ride you can get by with even saitek pedals (but they would still be my last choice).

Ok, which HOTAS should i get?
TomOnSteam replied to Jogui3000's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
You could consider buying a CH Pro Throttle, and CH Fighter stick (or even a Thrustmaser 16.000M joystick). They are more reliable products. My friend has an X-55 and he also tells me that they made the joystick way too big and that his normal sized hands can't reach 1/2 the buttons without moving his hand around the stick (which is not easy while you are flying) That's a great idea! I also would recommend waiting until the oculus rift and htc vive come out - because the 2nd hand market will probably be flooded with used trackIR 4 and 5's for cheap as many pilots will potentially be using VR. -
DCS: Shuttle Type 9 confirmed for DCS 3.0 (which allows for extraplanetary flight). I can't wait to dock with voyager.

Yeah sorry I forgot I was on a sensible part of the internet :) I'm just used to spelling things out in other forums hah!

You kind of get used to the track IR after a while but agree, it feels sometimes like you are looking through a small window in a tank using a monitor. Trying out an oculus DK2 even though I couldn't see very far because of the terrible resolution, it still felt like I was inside the aircraft. Anyway, I have to agree with the others, pedals aren't necessary, but if you are flying helicopters they make a big difference (assuming you get some nice pedals, I would stay away from saitek and CH pedals).

DiY Collective out of Gametrix ECS throttle
TomOnSteam replied to FishDoctor's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
That looks fantastic! Do you find it makes a difference to your helicopter flying? -
mouse + trackir difficult to use
TomOnSteam replied to olidz's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
I would much rather have an option (so if people don't like it they don't have to use it) like the OP says, where the cursor follows the cockpit rather than the view. -
I was thinking about the wand thing. I'm starting to think that these are almost too complicated. I think at most all I would need is a wand or even air mouse stuck to my left forearm, and then I would have a picky button on the joystick do a mouse click. That would allow me to move my left arm onto a button position and use my right hand pinky to click the button.

MiG-29A as a Third Free Aircraft for DCS:W
TomOnSteam replied to TheFurNinja's topic in DCS Core Wish List
I would rather that many of the planes be completely free - however like the TF-P-51D - no weapons, campaigns etc Perhaps only even a limited amount of fuel in multiplayer - enough for a take off a 5 minute flight and landing. You want people to be able to taste the real experience without giving away too much to encourage sales. -
LOL! yeah 30th of Nov :)
-
You should probably quickly tell Boeing, Lockheed, Bell, Dassault and many others, because they have all been stupid enough to put GPS and moving maps in all of their new planes.....:P Looking forward to the Gazelle! It looks much more stable than the Huey which constantly oscillates any chance it gets.

Generic Axis - for all axis functions
TomOnSteam replied to TomOnSteam's topic in DCS Core Wish List
I think you already are able to do that, and it works really well for one or maybe two modifiers. But I think clicking on, or looking at something is a lot more intuitive than trying to remember or learn several shift/modifiers. -
Generic Axis - for all axis functions
TomOnSteam replied to TomOnSteam's topic in DCS Core Wish List
Well of course, but from what I understand most people who play DCS aren't that lucky :) Especially people that are starting off, they haven't invested in such equipment, so it could make it more accessible. I also think that for people using VR this would be a good option, as it is easy to locate one slider or rotary with your hand even without being able to see. But if you have say a saitek stack of 4 levers, it will be much harder to pull the right lever since you cannot see outside of the VR unit. Actually that gives me an even better idea. Instead of using the mouse to click on levers inside the cockpit, you could enable an option to simply look at levers to highlight them - and which ever is highlighted would now be controlled by the generic axis. -
Watching how many levers there were in the top of the Gazelle, and realising that my throttle only has one slider/rotary has given me an idea: In DCS you could assign any joystick axis (say your zoom rotary on a warthog) to the generic axis command. Now wherever your mouse cursor clicked last, you can use this generic axis to control that in game lever. E.g. in the Gazelle: you would use the mouse to click on the yellow lever, and now your zoom rotary would control the yellow lever. Then you would click on the red lever, and you your zoom rotary would control that red lever. and of course then click on the black striped lever, and now your zoom rotary would control that black striped lever. Perhaps instead of clicking, VR users could even focus their view on any given(allowed/compatible) control which would highlight it, suggesting to the pilot that the highlighted control is now able to be used via the generic axis. I think this would be a more accurate and immersive way to control the simulator :) Especially if there are many levers or throttles like you have in a WW2 plane.

Where to learn basic flight manouvre?
TomOnSteam replied to kharasho's topic in DCS World 1.x (read only)
wow these are awesome, thanks! I'm hoping once the trainers are out of beta, they will have something like these as the missions. -
27 November 2015 DCS Weekend Update
TomOnSteam replied to Call911's topic in DCS World 1.x (read only)
Has there been anyword whether this will be release for the normal install of DCS, or whether it will be for the Beta install? -
watching that video really just emphasizes how badly they need to have controllers that are like gloves, knuckle dusters, or predator style wrist braces. Something that you don't need to hold, yet something that has an optical sensor that can tell if your fingers are moving.

If you remove the spring, would you have any resistance to push against? or are the pedals loose?

Rebuilding a Gametrix 908 seat...
TomOnSteam replied to Goblin's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
nice work! Thsi got me thinking - could you make a custom seat out of 2 gametrix seats for a total of 16 motors? Would the simshaker software know how to handle 2 seats connected into one pc? (not even sure it's necessary just curious.
