It wasn't fear that started Top Gun, it was a recognized need to win. Kill ratios were down for both the USAF and USN at 2:1, by the end of the war the USN had a 12:1. What happened was the powers to be decided that with the advent of missiles that ACM was a thing of the past, not understanding that the missiles were not ideally suited for small maneuverable fighters. Dogfighting became a lost art for most except the core guys at VX-4 and the RAG who got together and created tactics specifically to counter the MiG threat by talking with Israeli fighter pilots and also the Have Drill and Donut sessions. At no point was the US fighter community afraid of MiGs, they were frustrated with poor engagement rules and restrictions that put their weapons systems outside of their optimal use envelope. The ineffectiveness was magnified by poor maintenance procedures, a lack of understanding by engineering manufacturers as to The reality of the field environments their missiles were being maintained in, and also by ground and air crews not fully understanding properly the missiles' parameters for a higher probability kill shot. The politicians and policy makers might have been afraid, through misunderstanding of the actual or perceived situation, but generally the air crews dealt with the situation the best they could and were not "afraid". In fact, I would hazard a guess that they welcomed and hoped for engagements with MiGs as it offered a chance to prove one's self and validate one's training in a combat setting.

One question, is it 800+mb zipped?

Just looking at the teaser I would say E model based on the probe on the port side of the nose? I am not up on my variants, but that's what it looks like to me.

That's seems like a pretty huge number of a/c lost. How many of those were just helicopters? I would say A LOT, so that's a skewed number as well. US warplanes losses were 2251-ish, and most of those were lost to ground fire and not MiGs, compared to 150 or so for the VPAF. You have to remember that the air war in Vietnam was dragged out over 10 years, instead of just a few months over the Gulf.

Brewnix , are you talking about the Nemeth version? I don't think a license goes out to a single guy and that's it......look at.how many payware and freeware versions of Tomcat there are for FSX. And I don't recall who said it, but the CH-53 Is absolutely a combat helicopter. Sure it doesn't have offensive capabilities, but it for sure has flown into the fire, so to speak, and fended for itself with crew served weapons.

I am so stoked about this lol.....so sick of the guys who rarely fly Huey in my unit hopping in one and flying at 115kts /50% torque with no consequences.

this was discussed once before iirc - the doorless deal would be a 3d model deal, it would take some time to make it correct. the 3 variant swap via ground crew is unrealistic. You're talking about a configuration change, removal of the racks for one to put on pods for the other. the ground crew would not be able to do that in a timely fashion in real life. that doesn't even get into the removal of Viviane hardware.....I realize that it also isn't realistic to just "select role" and hop in another version, but the point is how unrealistic the version swap would be on the ground. I dunno enough about the real Gazelle, but maybe there isn't an audible warning for the over torque because there isn't one in real life? I would think if it did have one that it would be included already.

Not quite, there were engagements in Desert Storm 1. 36 MiGs were shot down during the fight, mostly by F-15 Eagles, but USN Hornets got a few as well if I remember that right. I believe also that a Tornado scored a kill, as did a Mirage. ~Rob

You would know if it was frozen because of a power issue, it would have the little yellow flag in the lower right corner. If you missed the inverter step and turning your AC power on then your compass wouldn't read properly. Once you have your inverter on and AC power to knob set to "AC Phase" then you have to manually align your compass and double check it with your MagCus (magnetic compass). Kelsoe, yours is a different problem, you didn't run your pitot heat. If you leave the switches off for those systems then you may experience icing in both engine and pitot. The engine icing light on the annunciator panel will indicate you are about to experience a loss of power due to icing, and turning the anti-icing switch on will clear it in a minute or so. The same does NOT apply for the pitot heat switch, once it clogs up or freezes up it does not come back until you spawn a new aircraft (this is just my experience so far, anyone else have something different?). Your indication of either a frozen or damaged pitot tube is your indicated airspeed being something other than what you know it ought to be, like in level flight at 32% torque you know you'll be doing around 90kts indicated, so if you are showing 40kts or 130kts in straight and level flight then you know you have a problem. What I do is pretty much coming into fall I get into the habit of running the pitot heat, and I turn it on after I have a green bird on the ramp. Both the pitot heat and anti-icing create huge draws on your system, so unless you are on ground power you stand a good chance to killing your batteries, especially in weather cold enough to warrant the use of both from the get go, i.e., snow on the ground. Hope that helps! `Rob

Looking really solid in that plane Mav!! -
Maybe a Dropbox type of DL host deal? I would host it if it'll help!! ~Rob

All of you need to watch out lol...Tirak gave me a negative reputation mark because I posted a pic of a non NA version harrier even though the squadron I posted a pic of is currently using the NA. He claimed it was because I was not following Zeus's express request to post only pics of the NA version. The best part is that I actually posted pics of the Na version.....post #42.

And a solid ground radar from ED. I know HB and the Community A-4 guys have more or less made their own, but I keep hearing that the 3rd party guys are waiting for the release of Hornet, and the ground radar coding, to implement on future 3rd party releases. Am I close on this or just listening too much to my mates' speculations?? ~Rob

Star Wars might have gotten the idea from Harrier, it was around when the first one came out!! *Speculative only, no facts backing that up, but still......

"So.... a submarine? ;)" No, we have the best of those too.....

" ......right now we are quite busy with other projects" I like the sound if that!!

Thanks Swiso......I do believe he was being humorous :-)

Left handed stick recomendation please
Robert31178 replied to imk's topic in Lock On: Flaming Cliffs 1 & 2
Lefty here as well....flight Sims and pls as in general are right hand favored, not like the gun world where a lot of stuff is accidentally left handed (before you start I have examples, but that's a different forum). I've never had an issue with flying righty. It's been like that from day one, my little Microsoft stick was force righty because the throttle was on the left side of the base. Works out just fine now, stick on right, throttle on left, and bonus, my mouse is also on the left so I can do stuff in game/cockpit/map and still fly straight. While a left handed controller seems lime a good idea, as a lefty in a righty world who adjusted so long ago to the gear I feel lime it would be impossible to switch over, and since the good stuff is already built for rightys I'll stick to that. I'm basing that on the one time I bought a left handed bolt action rifle.....I HATED how it felt after shooting my M48 Mauser for a decade!!! Good looking controller there though!!! -

The ultra rare convertible model. I wanna say they only made a handful of these? :-) I remember in Jane's FA your RIO would say stuff like "C'mon, do some of that pilot sh*t" -
I am happy to see a MiG-19, closer and closer to late Vietnam fakery missions starring Rhino, -21, -19, A-4, SLUF....amd yes, I know the variants Don't match up, but the basic airframes allow us some degree of accuracy :-)
