i'm old and I get stiff if I cant move my sitting position. so I sit on the warthog base on the seat. that way I can wiggle easily to a new position. without interrupting. and move the stick to retain position in relation to me. I have a cushion under my thighs which raises them and the stick base a few inches and helps lock the base under my thighs. it does not interfere with pedals etc. on a racing seat I could attach it to. its just easier if you can move it, I find.

OP the videos are supposed to encourage you not discourage you :) I could not fly helicopters at all 24 months ago. and if an idiot like me can learn it, without lessons, anyone can :) as long as they put the hours in. this forum is full of people looking for shortcuts :) and the truth is there are no shortcuts to learning helicopters. you just need to get to 1000 hours as quickly as possible. you really cannot pay to win :) because its your muscles that need to learn and not your brain. they need to learn "soft hands" why I sopped making hardware changes at taking the spring out and then spent 6 months flying to get good :) boring training flights. mostly take-offs and landings. and yes my brain got bored. but when I noticed I was flying and completely daydreaming about something else for an hour. then I knew my muscles were ready. and from that point it has all been giggles. you graduate from being a peter pilot to pilot. so don't get discouraged. what you are going through all helicopter pilots go through. and another thing, you never stop learning either. probably 1500 hours in the huey and I still learn stuff every flight. or see something old from a new angle. why I frigging love helicopters. just when you are getting bored you have a "I did not know it could do that" moment.. and as you can see from my 3week gazelle video. most of the skills transfer between airframes and only need polishing. so bin the trim and centre spring and teach your muscles, and be prepared for it to take some time. listening to music to keep the brain occupied :) try Fu Man Chu :) old but great for long journeys.

trump will have them towing banners with his name on it at his military parade :)

try pitching the screen on your face. up and down. twist it till it clicks. if the focal length is above or below eye line then pulling it off your face may move your eye into the focal length. so try pitching the screen to angle it into your eyes. the rift sweet spot can be a pain to find.

Tying trim and the autopilot together was one of the strange decisions done on the ka-50. which makes it unlike any other aircraft in DCS. this frooglesim vid helped me get it straight in my head.

this is me with less than 3 weeks flying the gazelle. so still rough round the edges. trying out the L. I have some reasonable wind which you will notice I turn into for the landing. makes things easier. wind, VR and no springs in my warthog. also good pedals :) sorry I don't have tackview. so cant watch your tracks to help.

do you use ED's trim abstraction or do you fly without trimming and use muscle memory? the huey has a constant roll to the left and right. she wallows. after you fly her a while you just learn to counter this. in the gazelle its pitching up and down. but again I learned to counter this automatically with muscle memory. although having flown the gazelle for three weeks my huey flying has gone to pot. it feels like a transport for the first time. damn scouts.

note the torque required to get into a hover. its around 40% so you fly between 80-90% and then need to drop it a long way for the hover. a lot further than the huey or the hip. why it feels touchy. use the gauge. to find 40% and she wont bob around so much in the hover as you juggle the collective around that point. she is also a scout helicopter. so her strong point does not need to be landing. like a transport helicopter. why she is nice to fly but a dog to land. kind of like the mig21..

nice vid :) I don't even have the f/a-18 and I enjoyed it :) I do like the way you have the hud repeating on the MFD. lots of people ask why that is even possible in the mig29, so seeing a real pilot do it out of choice made me laugh :)

I have my keyboard low on my right. so I can see it through the gap in the nose without moving my head to much. makes typing into multiplayer chat a lot easier.

Considering VR for the Hornet but afraid of motion sickness.
Quadg replied to Turnip's topic in Virtual Reality
I am immune to motion sickness from boats. and im immune from motion sickness from VR probably because i get vertigo. a life time of dealing with the disorientation caused by heights makes me immune to the disorientation caused by movement. and I think a lot of people experience vertigo for the first time in VR. so its a case of welcome to my world :) -
wargaming will always take imagination. and I have been wargaming since carboard counters and lead figures. before computers. the computers help. but you still need imagination. if I can imagine a table top to be an alien world, then anyone can imagine any of the maps to be anywhere they like. with not nearly as much effort :)

I bought VR a year ago (rift) because it was 1/3 the price of an ultrawide monitor. and I have not flown DCS on a monitor since. so it saved me loads of money :) I got it in last years summer sale. so if you wait a month.. it will probably be on sale again.

River Raider mission - How would you do it
Quadg replied to filthymanc's topic in DCS: A-10C Warthog
no people still get down and low with the a10 because being shot at is fun in a computer game :) doing it the proper way is also the most boring :) do it right and you don't get shot at.. its like moths and flames.. " but the tracer fire is so pretty...." :) -
River Raider mission - How would you do it
Quadg replied to filthymanc's topic in DCS: A-10C Warthog
modern western ground attack doctrine has changed somewhat over the life of the a10. it used to be get low with guns and rockets to find and destroy targets. why the a10 has a big gun. but now with modern microprocessors radar controlled guns and MANPADs are way to lethal. but so are your own guided munitions. so they stuck a litening pod on the a10 and reversed its doctrine. and the rule now is stay high above 12000ft to avoid 2/3 of the enemies weapon platforms. so avoiding AAA and MANPADS. and use guided munitions to destroy ground targets and provide support. via the sniper/litening pod. then you only have to deal with one enemy. the SAMS. so spend your time studying the enemy SAM and figure out ways to defeat each type (lots of youtube vids on this) once you deal with or avoid the sam you can pretty much do what you like. as long as you stay up above 12000ft. -
and the zero :)

no, that's only when you are grossly overweight when you can get into a ground effect hover but no higher because of low speed rotor. this is different because the helicopter is not overloaded. in fact the helicopter has no load until you get 50ft off the ground and lift the load. and then its only 1200lbs. so you should have no issues with a low speed rotor. unless you move the collective too quickly. and that also spikes the EGT. moving the collective too quickly.
-
you need to extend to the rope length without cooking the engine. and only go into the red for a very short time when actually lifting the load. default rope is 50ft. so after hooking you need to raise to 50ft in the hover without going into the red. and the climb may be slow as you get to the top of ground effect. then when you are at 50ft you use a burst of collective to lift the load and get you into translational lift. (40kph) and then you reduce to within tolerance. so you only cook it for 5 seconds. and never exceed 760 degrees.

the 4930k is a good overclocker. mine has been running at 4.5 ghz for over 4 years. on air cooling.

i thought political discussion was banned? obviously not gender politics :) I'm here for the beautiful aircraft. you can do what you like with the humans. replace them all with my little ponies if you like. in fact replacing the male gazelle co-pilot with a pony may be an improvement. he freaking scares me.
-
it will be like the harrier. at first all you will see online is exploding F/A-18 everywhere. billions of dollars worth :) then after a while everyone will fall back to the aircraft they are best in.. to claw back some self respect. this is what happens in competitive games like lol that get lots of new "champions"

Vegas blurry from the distance
Quadg replied to Comes's topic in DCS: Nevada Test and Training Range
these photos don't seem off to me. if anything the heat haze should be worse. its a desert. from the hotels the mountains dance on the horizon because of the shimmer. and if there is no wind then it combines with the smog to make the city almost invisible from the surrounding ridges :) well that's how it was when i was there. found a good spot above the race track to watch b52 land at nellis, but we should also have had a great view of the city beyond. we didn't. because of shimmer and smog. and all that water evaporating off the lawns and swimming pools :) -
it works well with anything you have to actually fly, so world war 2 birds and the older jets. it can be a bit annoying in the a10c when knocking it turns off your autopilot. when you need to trawl through sub menus. but it also makes air to air refuelling easier. so even in the A10c it has its plus points. the warthog has 4 small precision springs as well as the main big return spring. so you use a combination of those 4 to give some centring force. the stick will happily stand to attention. so you can take your hand off it
-
i took the return spring out of my warthog over a year ago. never looked back :) the only helicopter i press the trim button with is the KA-50 and that only because trim is linked to the autopilot. i was going to get an extension but taking the spring out was enough.
