  1. Vortex ring state anyone....
  2. Lets face it missiles can and will be be defeated. The same goes for stealth. An F-117 was shot down using old antiquated missile systems by a resourceful commander. If not now then someone will find a way to defeat them. Bullets on the other hand can't be defeated by ECM, just good piloting. My point is simply that since the advent of missile and/or stealth systems the military keeps wanting to write off dogfighting skills and guns as being obsolete. It has been wrong. Just as wrong as trying to retire the A-10...
  3. Can't believe they never put a gun on this bird. I remember an interview with one of the aces from the vietnam war and the "experts" said guns were obsolete, with these new missiles you don't need them. The Navy and USAF all but quit teaching dog fighting skills because these new wonder weapons were so great...The result? : "In 1965 the first USAF Phantom IIs were sent to Vietnam. Early versions lacked any gun armament. Coupled with the unreliability of the air-to-air missiles (AIM-7 Sparrow and AIM-9 Sidewinder) of the time, this major drawback resulted in the aircraft loss after they ran out of missiles. During the course of the Vietnam War, its contemporaries, the MiG-19 and MiG-21, inflicted heavy losses on the F-4s when the American aircraft were ambushed after returning from bombing assignments." First they tried to add an external gunpod (sound familiar?) but that was garbage and couldn't hit the broad side of a barn. Finally admitting their failure the USAF put guns in the nose.. Those who don't learn from history are destined to make the same mistakes.
  4. I've never seen soo many people bitch about a free game in my life. They dropped "simulator" from Flight for a reason. Just because it isn't what you want doesn't make it "abject garbage". When was it EVER stated by Microsoft that Flight was to be the replacement for MSFS? As far as 777 goes. They make DLC to continue to fund development, you don't have to buy the DLC to play or compete in that game at all. It's eye candy and variety, big deal. They are trying to keep it interesting and keep their product going. Would you rather have it like the 90's where all these "sims" are broke junk garbage with no update to fix it? Other than DCS what other "realistic" sim have you played? Maybe broke old F4 but thats about it. As far as going extinct, the market was never huge in the first place. In my book ED has pushed the envelope and created its own market with DCS series...there is literally nothing to compare it to.
  5. I know a lot of people were dissapointed because when they heard about Flight they were expecting the next iteration of MSFS. Flight was never going to be that nor will it ever be. Maybe some day they will develop MSFS again. As far as a sim goes it's pretty light weight. We will never see any PMDG aircraft in there. It does have a few good things going for it. 1) It's Free 2) My girlfriends 8 year old son can jump in and fly with me online on easy setting and I can fly with all the assists off. 3) Since its free I didn't have to spend fifty bucks to find out he doesn't like flight sims (he does like it BTW) 4) It runs really smooth at fairly high settings on older hardware, I know it runs better than FSX on similar hardware. My 2 cents: I'm happy someone younger can enjoy this hobby as much as I do. If you guys haven't noticed there are not a lot of younger people who play flight sims anymore. Average age is 30+... Something inexpensive to get their feet wet and have fun. Face it we hare spoiled by this new generation of sims high fidelity. Looking back on all the older ones I used to play when I first started siming in the 90's were pretty weak compared to now. So Flight is actually pretty good for a starter sim with a few things thrown in for vets... Just not enough to keep our interest. It's pretty sad to log in to DCS multiplayer and see so few servers and all of them locked except for 2(somewhat a seperate issue I know) but in the old days there were tons of servers in games like Flanker, F4 and IL-2 etc. Anything that brings new blood in and gives them a shove ever so slightly towards more advaced sims like DCS is alright in my book.
  6. A couple of questions: Are you using the airbrakes? Did you have the NWS engaged? You shouldn't turn it on until you are down to safe taxi speed and vice versa when you are taking off. Have you tried rudder pedals with a toe brake function? The toe brakes would give you a proportional input to the brakes verses a digital one being full on/full off with W key. I've seen a video from I think Tiger from the 74th instructional video he never even touches the brakes at all.
  7. COD team is adding driveable tanks, cars and AA guns...different genre I know but same idea. Too bad that sim runs like $h!t...
  8. I will probably end up using that at some point. 2 weeks of waiting for parts and rebuilding I just want to fly right now :) It seems every time I start tinkering I look up and it's midnight and I didn't fly at all...
  9. Finally replaced the whole computer and did some upgrades to my Obutto :) I re-used my 900W PSU, both GTX 480's and BlueRay drive 5 days of testing and resetting everything back up is finally over ...whew BF3 is the only game where I have to turn down graphics settings to get acceptable framerate. Running at resolution of 6060x1080 ( bezel corrected ) it looks amazing in DCS, ROF, CoD etc The new 3930K blows my old 920 out of the water where DCS series is concerned. On medium settings its over 90 FPS, High is 45-30's range. I tried the "3 monitors" setting using the screens as 3 interdependent displays but the FPS is in the 20's so I switched the the "span" mode which makes it 1 giant display. It's hard to explain the feeling you get the first time you fly with 3 monitors. it almost makes you feel like you are moving. My girlfriend was standing over my shoulder and she said she was getting motion sickness lol. Not sure if I will reuse my Mimo USB displays. If I have to go out of fullscreen mode it will kill my FPS, TBH I don't even miss them not being plugged in right now. One very annoying DCS issue I'm having is the framerate drop whenever a black smoke plume appears from burning. It will literally drop me from 120 FPS (all settings on low , everything turned off) to 0 for a split second....every time you turn your head or it comes back into view this happens.....arrgh. Spent all weekend trying to figure out the cause.
  10. There are kind of 2 different threads within this thread. 1. Save install space by sharing folders of common files between programs. 2. Having to exit the game and restart to switch aircraft. Sharing files that are duplicated is easy , sharing an .exe so you can jump into any DCS level aircraft- not so easy. Some people want it like FC/FC2 so they can just jump in any aircraft they like for multiplayer. IMO the DCS series needs to shift to a model more like ROF : a single .exe, all files and models are part of the sim and you unlock aircraft by purchasing them. It's not rocket science but would require significant changes to the way it is now. I really like they way they handle it over there. It's way better than say FSX or DCS is now. I know there is a huge difference between WW1 and modern aircraft but the idea is the same. DCS need s to evolve. It's all there they just need to make changes to make it happen. As a SSD user I want this to happen. BS1 + FC2 + BS2 + A10C + FC3 + P51 + Nevada etc eats a ton of HD space where MOST of the files are duplicated. I agree it's Occams Razor. It's just hard to change your business model when you've been doing it one way for so long... Edit: As a side note SSD prices +/- $1 perGig - premium space but worth every penny.
  11. My guess is that it has something to do with the viewports. It may not be fixable via the monitor file in DCS but you might have better luck using "1 monitor " and SoftTH. I haven't messed with SoftTH since I only have 3 screens and got it working OK just using the game. There's tons of info on this forum about it and in the end you will prob end up with a better alignment of screens /bezels.
  12. Wow terminal....just wow ..... a man after my own heart. Very close to what I am building right now. A word of caution though. Don't wait too long to build your system. If you build slowly its real hard to get a part exchanged past 30 days if something is DOA. Within 30 days you can return to the reseller after that you are on your own dealing with tech support from the manufacturer. My friend was a victim of this and I've seen many sob stories on Newegg etc of people lamenting that their part failed and it was past the 30 days and they were dealing with RMA's to the mfr for 4 weeks.
  13. I did order a full system upgrade but will be using Nvidia surround with 3 Asus LED monitors. 3D with 3 monitors would've cost me more than a full system upgrade(minus the graphics cards) Just not worth it for me yet. I haven't decided if I want to keep the USB 7" displays. Right now there is no performance hit using them at all but everything will change once I load up the cards with 2 more 1920 x 1080 displays. I'll do some FPS testing before and after the upgrade. Thanks for all the feedback.
  14. Sounds like the crooked music and movie industry have already infiltrated most of European governtments by paying off the politicians and holding everyone hostage so they can get their roalyties. ACTA is real and noone wants to believe it. Secret treaties that noone can see but movie execs get to? Here in the US the movie industry has put so much money to push their legal agenda that it would cover 10% of every elected congressman/senators campaign fund.
  15. To my knowledge there is no 3D monitor that give 120Hz per eye in 3D mode. 60Hz per eye is fine. If you saw Avatar in the IMAX 3d it was only 24Hz......One of the most amazing 3d movies of all time. If you are really set on 3D then you will have to drop $600-$700 for an Asus, BenQ monitor with Nvidia 3D vision 2 with lightboost tech. Passive is OK for movies but for gaming....It's all in the users perception . That's just my personal opinion , everyone sees 3D slightly different and their expectations of what it is and isn't great are widely varied.
  16. That would be awesome. While they are at it please patch in the Scorpion HMCS into the A-10 ;P http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/JHMCS#Joint_Helmet_Mounted_Cueing_System_.28JHMCS.29
  17. Great point... with Saitek controls you can switch profiles on the fly. TM WH-Not do able unless you configured purely through the game. In FC I used to have different profiles for say F15 and the Frogfoot and it wasn't a problem to switch on the fly. With TARGET software would have to reload the actual hardware driver. My guess is the game would crash if it tried to reload the USB driver or the game wouldn't recognize it anymore since it changed. Granted with the A-10 it's plug n play. Other aircraft not so much. You would just have to do all of your controls 100% via the game instead of TARGET.
  18. Well today I made my move. The I7-3930K came up for sale on Newegg as I was browsing I had my wishlist already made and bought it. Damn things are nearly impossible to get without being ripped off another hundred dollars. I decided against trying 3 3D monitors in surround it's just too expensive for my budget. Instead I ordered a new processor, board, ram, case, corsair C100 cooler and 3-24" LED displays for about the same price. I also ordered the triple monitor mount adapter for my Obutto. I'll post pics of everything in a couple of weeks once I have the new system built and I get it integrated into my pit. Going to hold off on graphics upgrade until I see Nvidias next offering. The 2 480's run everything except DCS over 100 FPS and are fine for now.
  19. I'm pretty sure that the reason is because they do not wan't their quadro users that pay big bucks for high end cards that work on more than 2 monitors to start using cheaper gaming cards. I read some article about this some time ago. It's purely about marketing and $$$ maybe this has changed but I don't think so.
  20. A) I use multimonitor setups for both BS 1.0/2.0 and WH they are different because the shark doesn't have 2 perfectly symetrical displays. So I have 2 different Monitor configs for each game in BS one of my mini usb screens gets rotated 90 degrees so I can see the whole ABRIS. This is not in the users/../saved games directory its in the Monitor setup folder of the main program. There would be a huge conflict for some people. I don't want the same monitor setup for both games. Most people wouldnt notice unless you are a pitbuilder or have multiple screens. I also use very different graphics setting optomised for each aircraft's role. I like more ground detail in the shark compared to the WH where you are flying at 15k feet doing bombing runs. Sure it's not 100% of the time but I can tell you I never fly the chopper as high as the hog. B) It's not as simple as seperate directories for starforce: Protection levels There are two confirmed "tiers" of StarForce protection:[citation needed] Basic "[Allows] to protect the executable Windows file of the application and provide control of creation and distribution of licenses during the product’s lifetime." Pro "[Ensures] reliable protection of original data and code as well as control over creation and distribution of licenses during full life cycle of software products." IIRC - ED is using the basic version which is tied to the .exe file, therefore you must exit the program and use a different .exe for a different license. No way to switch on the fly....get it? They would have to retool their whole product line to make it work. A ton of labor for very little.
  21. One big caveat: Copy protection. Each game has a separate license key. They would have to change how it works to something like Arma II that allows multiple instances of product keys for different content. If it wasn't for this I'm sure someone would have already compared the files and made some LUA mods to make it happen. I'd like to see a combined forces mod someday though.
  22. I don't think its possible in it's current state due to the number of control differences and buttons between aircraft. They would have to completely retool the UI and have dropdowns for each aircraft. Seems it could be done. What I don't want is a control mess with everything combined into one it would be a nightmare to setup.
  23. Druid is right about the Intel RST drivers not passing the TRIM command though to Raid arrays. Supposedly there will be an update soon to address this (saw it on a tech site somewhere). I used to reformat yearly but Windows 7 hasn't failed on me yet... I'll wait for the driver update...
  24. I've had a pair of SSD's running for 3 years now in RAID0. Early SSD's had a limited lifespan but currently the MTBF is similar to hard drives. Some are so reliable in fact that they would last 100 years. This is just a generalization of course since every OEM is different using different chips, controllers and manufacturing. As with anything it's best to do your homework before buying.
  25. I just don't understand why people are getting upset when it was being developed in parallel. The engine is already in place they just had to make the model etc. If it didn't detract from development of other products there is no argument to be made... Who knows if it's even the same team that is working on a modern fast mover? I applaud the effort and wish them luck. If it is successful who knows maybe ED will have a WWII era aircraft development team working in tandem with the others using the same base engine. Who knows maybe they already do.... It's also funny that I've never heard complaints that they had WWII era aircraft or Biplanes in FSX. It could be just ED reaching out to the more general flight sim crowd.
