Agreed, the engine is dated.

All the DCS games are not "so delicate". I know you're frustrated, but this simulation is so far from deserving that type of back-handed comment. :( The applications are very robust IMO ... certainly when you compare it to FSX which truly is a nightmare to get to a playable state. Moving on, I can't really tell what you're doing wrong, but when I have issues I find it helpful to go back to the basics. Re-read the install instructions Install DCS World latest version If you've followed an upgrade path for the A10 and/or the Blackshark, you'll need to install the originals first Install the latest DCS World versions of the aircraft in point number 3 Install the latest DCS World version of the P-51D After that you should have a populated DCS World. As far as setting up your options, that's a whole different issue. Again I find it's very logical and straight forward ... but I don't know your gear. Good luck!

Mate, that last pic absolutely rocks! Love your work!

:D if you're on a diet of re-fried beans and chilli, I'm guessing that I wouldn't want that to happen right? -
Won't touch it with a barge pole as long as it's in FSX. :D When (and if) it's in Prepar3d I'll look at it again. For the mean time, I'll fly commuter, and weekend warrior stuff in the A-10.

I gave Prepar3d another go last night (ver 1.4) with REX Essentials and a decent payware plane (Carenado Beechcraft C90B King Air). I'll admit it runs very smoothly and believably ... and very differently than my experience on FSX (which I also own). So I Prepar3d will be a keeper for me alongside X-Plane! :D

In the virtual world, bird poo adds to realsim, the sense of being there. I think there's an opportunity here for dedicated bird poo modellers to create a bird-poo addon enhancement. Some more interesting details about bird poo ... Some people think that being poo-ed on by a passing bird is a sign of good luck. Of course, if the 'bird' is a bipedal, wears lipstick and sports a bad hair-do ... then it's atrociously bad luck! Indian ring-neck bird poo makes for very good fertiliser. My tomatoes are fantastic! If you ever run out of papier-mache glue, consider bird poo (Indian Ringneck to be specific .. first hand experience). It sets rock hard and is extremely hard to shift once set. Of course if you're using it to make balloon masks for the local kindy, you may get a few curious looks from attendent parents and carers, but hey, the kids will LOVE it .. especially if you tell 'em it's poo! So you see, there's a lot of positives (and one big negative) about bird poo.

Out of the box on looks alone, X-Plane wins by a mile. When you start to factor in other things such as flight model ... its also above and beyond. But sometimes I guess its just what we get used to. Hey Phantom, is that X-Aviation's DC3? (And how does she fly?).

I know what FBW is m8 ... although I think you might be missing the point I was trying to make. Not a problem though, takes all perspectives to make the world spin. That's what makes it interestin! Cheers! :D

:glare: Oooh yes! How did I miss these updates?

Tried again ... get a message saying that I'm not able to give reputation on this post ...

Thanks for that! Would've rep-ed you but for some reason it won't allow me ...

That's absolutely fine and good (and actually a good answer), because I've emphasised from the outset that my view is based on a subjective perspective as yours obviously is as well. The problem arises when that perception is is countered with a "you're wrong" tye of argument. It's subjective and there's no over-riding right or wrong. That is why we couch the description in ambiguous terms such as *feel* ... because it's the result of how we *feel*. :D Thank you for your detailed explanation, but ... bunkum. What you're saying might actually be technically sound on the surface, but doesn't answer why I might perceive the sensation of flight the way I do. Unless of course, I've misunderstood what you mean in this sentence? In fact I've only given a very vague description of how I might perceive that sensation, because it's too complex for me to put into a succinct sentence. All this proves is that it's basically futile to attempt to pin down a general perspective that holds true among all people. I'll re-iterate, FSX *feels* terrible to me in the way it imparts the sensation of flight. Based on that instinct I attempted to answer the OP; which asked for our personal opinion and argument why we would recommend one sim over another! ;) Aaron and other learned friends with a penchant for physics tend to back up their perceptions with data. I can't do that, but it's still pointless telling me my perception is *wrong*. You'd have a more telling argument if you could say that based on your own empirical evidence, you're able to endorse one simulations *feel* of flight over an other ... Oh, and we'd need to have an understanding based on mutual trust hehe.

In my personal experience of flying (as baggage) in various fixed wing aircraft (including the A320, which is FBW AFAIK) and choppers, flying has always felt like flying. Each experience of flight has reinforced my neural pathways via sight and motion, so that my brain is convinced that I am flying. E.g I have never mistaken riding a train with flying in a C130 or a Chinook. :D It's that *feel* that I'm talking about in the flight simulation environment. I'm sure (as you imply) that the underlying FCS has some bearing on how an aeroplane manoeuvres, but I believe that my brain should still perceive it as flight.
-
Well, obviously you can do a comparison .. it just depends on what your criteria for comparing is. :D Feel of flight is an extremely subjective thing. Despite that, it is the first hurdle that any simulator must pass for me to continue investing time in it. If it doesn't pass this hurdle, it doesn't matter to me how advanced it's avionics and systems modelling is, it's an automatic fail. I agree with Aaron, FSX fails spectacularly from my point of view, and the VRS Superbug is a great idea built on a shakey foundation. My very subjective verdict .. DCS Warthog is light years ahead of VRS. Having said that, if you feel the need for speed and just can't wait for that fast jet experience, plus you like the SH, then by all means get the SH as well. BTW, I fly BMS Falcon to get my fast jet fix. Continuing on ... I'll wait and see how Prepar3d develops as I'm guessing that VRS SH will probably eventually go that way (natural successor and all). I know it's been stated that it's never going to happen (never say never I say ;)), but ..... I really hope the VRS and TacPack idea take root in X-Plane ... !!!BUT!!! ... if DCS World keeps going the way I hope it goes, it (DCS) will be a very fulfilling experience.

PeterP .. is that what 16 New Tons looks like? BTW, when it's inert (just sitting there) it's not a unit of force, but of potential force. If one were to drop it onto one's head from ceiling height (for arguments sake) ... only then would it be a unit of force. Well, 16 new tons of it :smartass:

I represent the inuendo of your amplifications sir! Jules is a real good sort! Put up yer dukes! :D

subLogics Flight Simulator II for Commodore 64 ... loved it to bits.

X-Plane has always been a favourite of mine. It captured that elusive 'feel' of flight from the very first X-Plane I bought (version 3). Had a bit of a hiatus then have updated consistently since ver. 8. I've always loved the 'world' playground of x-plane as it's a nice balance between real world terrain, good visuals and playability. DCS terrain is awesome too, but not quite as expansive a geography ;o). Now, if ONLY I could get a Tornado, with DCS level systems fidelity in X-Planes world that's been *activated* as a combat arena (e.g. TacPack for X-Plane) ... I'd be a very happy chappy. We're getting a Tornado in 10, which I hope has a high level of fidelity ( ). For the time being I'm cool flying x-aviations creations. The MU-2 is sweet (for 9 ... I hope it's patched to 10). For those of you who have the talent, here's the x-plane developer link http://developer.x-plane.com/ ... and for scenery, theres WED.
