Yes #2 is important. Also when you see tutorials when they are breaking 90 degrees, that usually should only be happening if doing a SHB which is not too normal practice and really only reserved for the person who thinks he has the skills to show off (and is the one breaking the deck so as to not be a danger to anyone else). Otherwise don't be afraid to go even as far as 4 nm upwind before performing the break if you need to (BTW, 4 nm is the max you can be in the pattern before you must depart and re-enter). v6, boNes

Don't sweat things too much because even if you are on the numbers all the time there is always that random factor that will change things or have your otherwise perfect approach become not so perfect. Ideally, especially in cyclic ops, you should be about 1.1-1.3 nm from from the boat on downwind. Your turn to the 90 should occur right when you see the paint on the round down. When you make the turn, depending on how far close you are from the boat when you did it will determine how much bank you need. At the max of 1.3 nm? Turn 27 deg AOB and a little later. Closer like 1.0 nm? Turn harder at 30 AOB and turn sooner. EIther way you shouldn't be anywhere outside the 27-30 AOB ideally. But if you find you need to be--then do some of that pilot sierra and do what you have to within safe parameters to get yourself there. I agree that it's hard to see the markings on the boat compared to real life. What I end up doing to help myself out is remember what BRC is and turn to very closely PARALLEL the boat at BRC. As in, if I was to keep flying straight, the boat would be just off to the side underneath my canopy rail. Having the ship's wake under my armpit helps a little but I don't rely too much on that. When I notice the localizer of the ICLS start to move left, then I gently bank to compensate and get on centerline. Just dip the wing and straighten out over and over as needed. Holding a bank makes you lose life and will screw up your glide path. But most important, practice! You get more and more comfortable with it and know what to do but like I said there may always be something that comes up that changes things but you will know how to compensate. Not even the most seasoned naval aviators get a three wire every single time. v6, boNes

DCS Open Beta Server not pulling Sinai Map
bonesvf103 replied to Jself's topic in Installation Problems
Is it that the new modular server is required for Sinai to function? Also, is there is an automatic method to update to the new server, or does the whole thing need to be reinstalled? v6, boNes -

Same. Any solutions? v6, boNes

You mean SHIFT-K? If so, you have to page left twice ("[" key) from the default kneeboard page to see your trap. I don't think there is a way to record them like you were asking. v6, boNes

Understood, when I posted that it was out of surprise because since it was working I had no idea there was even an issue, plus I thought it worth mentioning so that HB knew it wasn't everyone (which I let them know in that other thread). Meant no disrespect. v6, boNes

F14 VR - VDI screen not usable in MT Version
bonesvf103 replied to westr's topic in Bugs and Problems
I only found out about this bug today from reading yesterday's beta update post. I will say that I run MT and have not ever had this TCS experience, even before yesterday's patch, or the others, to the extent that I wasn't even aware there was a bug reported. I fly SP, MP, and Campaign and have not had any issues. I fly the Steam version. So I guess I fall into HB's boat where I can't reproduce it. v6, boNes -
I fly MT and my TCS works fine even before the patch... v6, boNes

That would be kinda cool actually... v6, boNes

You know, I didn't get to check yet. Thanks for your reminder! v6, boNes -
So does using the sliders in the rearming menu have any effect on anything? So FIRST select ALE39 loadout in the ground crew menu, then use rearm refuel window leaving the sliders where they are. When refueling is complete, the AL39 loadout first selected is loaded, then the missiles. Then jump in back and set the pilot to dispense flares or chaff as desired. Is that the right way? v6, boNes

Oops, thanks. We can delete this post. v6, boNes

I'll tell you I fly the Tomcat the most and when using the overlay, if I leave the ball where it should be on the datums I almost always catch the 3 wire, and if not, other wires besides the 1. I can't explain why that is if it's eternally set to the Hornet. One of life's great mysteries I guess. v6, boNes

Do you have any video or a track to share? What kind of grades re you getting? Are any of them EGTL or EGIW? You may be perfect onslope and on the ball but if you cut throttles at the ramp and drop the Tomcat, you will be too low at the very last second and catch a 1 wire. v6, boNes

I prefer B over A because I love having that much power quickly available to me. The TF30 lags and complains too much haha. But i do like the A, and respect it. v6, boNes

F-14A/B waypoint/radar (idk if this is a bug or not)
bonesvf103 replied to sBinnala64's topic in DCS: F-14A & B
I'm not understanding what is wrong. Can you elaborate? v6, boNes -
I see that when you rearm your Tomcat you can use the slider to change the amount of flares/chaff you are carrying. However, there is also the option in the radio menu to change your chaff and flares. I heard somewhere atr earm screen is broken and to not load chaff/flares there, but to use the radio menu option instead. Is this correct? Also, if you do load up with the radio menu, is it instantaneous, or do you have to wait a certain amount of time like you do with the rearm menu? Thanks. v6, boNes

Thanks! That is great info. I looked at my video again and yes, the lights are wrong in DCS. I plugged, saw that my internal fuel was increasing, but the red light on the upper right was blinking signaling even though I was taking fuel. v6, boNes

Yes I noticed it was higher too. Didn't change anything much for me though since I base my reference point from the fuel cell only. Which leads me to something I wanted to add about the original posts. For those who are learning AAR for the first time, it's all well and good where you read from one person to use the S-3 tailhook or another to use the canopy bow, yet another to use the fuel cell for reference etc etc. But keep in mind that this is all very subjective. The views depend alot, I think, on your own personal situation. If you are using TrackIR, the viewis ont the same as in VR, or without any head tracker. If you have your view zoomed in or even out, that can change the sight picture. Your HOTAS and how it responds to stickand throttle inputs could affect it. What I'm trying to say is that these tips are helpful, but you still are going to have to find what works for YOU or you have to find your own reference point that works for you. I mean, even you physical height or your posture in your IRL seat can change things. So find what works for you and stick to it. The only thing that would be the same nomatter your gear, your size, your eyesight etc, is the amount of input you put in. You should be putting in only a teeny tiny bit of input, and then immediately countering it with the opposite. Put a little in and then take it out, etc. Anything more than that and you will put in too much correction and chase the basket all over the place, setting yourself up for PIO (pilot-induced oscillation) and thus increasing your chances of missing, getting frustrated, and venting it by putting a weapon into the tanker's six. Just a tip. When you can tank from and with anything. I've tanked from an S-2, KC-135, KC-130, and even the IL in both a Tomcat and a Hornet and it was all the same technique, more or less. Even in the F-16 with the boom the same principal applied even though there was no basket. So try to keep that in mind. v6, boNes PS in the S-3, how do you interpret the flashing lights on the fuel cell?

I just posted about that in the bugs forum as I noticed the shorter hose as well. The discussion is ongoing here: v6, boNes
