just a small handcrafted button box
dFlow replied to dFlow's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
@MrBurns: i like your build very much, looks similar to my first box :) yeah building such things is really funny ... so you built an f18 cockpit or you're planning to ? -
thanks fox for the explanation, it makes more sense to me now :) never thought about that sitting in a narrow space would help the immersion of flight, but you're absolutely right! hmmm seems like i need to build my own flying coffin now :D

just a small handcrafted button box
dFlow replied to dFlow's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
I used an old joystick, so mapping things just happens the same as for every other joystick / joypad you can use in any game. In my case this was because i want to use it in other games as well ... star citizen for example. Using DCS Bios wouldn't allow me to do this, an old joystick otherwise would the switches and the box itself is bought from my electronics store of trust in my home town, but you can get everything on amazon as well. Actually the screen was bought on amazon, it's an 7" touchscreen utilized through hdmi and usb for touch. -
just a small handcrafted button box

actually i killed one of my old joysticks and used the buttons / hat for the buttons on this box. the three analog dials on the right are the original joystick axis + thrust :) the box itself is the upper body of a bought plastic box, but i found it fit the whole thing perfectly, so i didn't bother in (letting) print a body for this project unfortunately i need to ask people to print for me since i don't own a 3d printer ;) the next box (if there will be any?) will be with an arduino i think. it makes things much easier than hoping an old joystick would work. but lucky me - the old thing just does its job perfectly well... -
is there a particular reason why it has to be movable? i like the compact design, but what i am wondering is: do you use the monitor for flight, with the keyboard on it? or do you just use it with VR?

What should be the next Capt Zeen Helios profile?

Viggen + M2000 ;) -
Since flying a complex plane is easier with more controls available, i decided to create a button box for my needs. In addition i fitted a small 7" touchscreen into the box. The whole thin looks like this: The box to the right is my first try, which i made earlier just to test out how it flies with more controls. I know it isn't quite a home made cockpit, but available space (and my wife) constantly prevent building something bigger :D Any thoughts on this?

the best solution would be to give those birds (l39 and yak52) to dcs world as starting aircraft. With this you'd be able to use the l39 not only as trainer, but to "show" others the world of flight, by just telling them "download this, hop on my plane and lets rumble a bit" ;) I bought the l39, and i love it really much, and i wouldn't mind that even after i paid for it, it would be a free module afterwards.

the main thing i am afraid of is: how can you spot the difference if the plane you have as your enemy is an original high fidelity MiG21, or a MAC-MiG21? and does the MAC-MiG21 have other advantages over the original one? do they have all-hitting-magic missiles? as bkthunder said, the main reason to go for this study sim is - to study the planes and the usage of them. i hope future MP servers will have the possibility to allow / decline MAC modules
-
ah ok... your srs client gets the info on what freq. etc. is used and pushes this + the voice to the srs server. so the srs server itself doesn't neet to know anything about dcs itself, it just provides communication just like teamspeak or similar. if you join teamspeak and you are in a certain channel on your client, then the teamspeak server would use your voice on its side in exactly this channel ... the teamspeak server himself wouldn't know if you play DCS or candy crush ;) the srs server is just a small service running voice
-
I'm not quite sure if i understand the question right, but let me put it this way: BS Server and SRS Server is in our case not on the same machine (this is the reason why you have different addresses for both). On the client (your) side you just need to start DCS and connect to the BS server. Connecting to SRS would be done on the client side on the same machine, since your SRS client needs the export data (which radio is set, what frequency ... ) from DCS directly.
-
ok just to post it here as well: the address for srs is: srs.sytes.net as i said, if you're having trouble with it, just let me know currently the srs service is run remotely and not on the same machine as the BS server, so autoconnect will not work
-
so the server is running stable - not OB ?
-
this!! :D If I didn't already own it, I'd buy it another time :D
-
glassy / classy cockpit :D What are those touchscreens exactly ?
-
Yep SRS! If you have issues with connecting to it, with latency or similar, please pm me and let me know
-
hm but cutting the edge of the picture when entering its limits should be possible ... other modules are able to do such things as well
-
anyway, shouldn't the image be not visible in the last picture? since the reflection cannot go beyond the lense borders ?

Hi, i haven't found anything like it ... so i ask my question here: I have a dual monitor setup, one for the main viewport, the other for exports like radard etc. the thing is, everytime i make a screenshot, the whole picture including the export screen is saved. is there a possibility to do a screenshot only of the main view?
-
you have to export the radar on a screen next to you ... on the ingame screen it is much harder to see planes are really small dots, which are apparently not more than that you don't see what it is, how high it flies, where to it goes or if it is a friend or foe ... but in combination with a gci it can help to make out targets so yes i can see targets in the air (or at least months ago)
-
i think too that this would be a great idea it would help very much to not be spammed by computer voice and it would be so easy: just add the line "Human GCI on xxx.x MHz" to the mission briefing ;)

MiG-21 used to be my favorite ride... can't stand it now

+1 this is getting out of hand, on both sides!
