Snipers mostly observe and report. If they are attached to a fire team, then well yeah, they will shoot often. But true sniper in a recon mission don't shoot often. I wonder why people are so facinated by snipers. I play airsoft as a dedicated sniper. I give the qualitication class to use higher fps rifles (Canada's airsoft rules). I've been sniping for more than 5 years and I've seen a lot of people dishing out a lot of money on upgraded rifles, only to sell them to buy another AEG because they hate the low amount of kills they get + the amount of pain just to get overgunned. The sniper has the worst job of all infentry. I like it only because it's hard and it require you to be batient and enduring.

You can shoot things from upclose if you want. You will only scratch your helicopter paint and possibly your scalp. I never experienced a safety systeme preventing me to fire inside 800m with the targeting devise. Maybe because when I'm that close, I'm busy getting away.

I did a mission recently where the ennemy is firing Nona and other weapons at a village from the edge of a forest. When I get in range to attack, they "ear" me and run deep in the forest. The only way for me to engage them, is to fly higher and saturate the erea with rockets. I get a few kills here and there. It's easyer when they return fire. The AI wingmens finish the job, as he aparently has something I don't in his chopper, like a termal sight... (o: But seriously, like said by other, engaging from high angle is the key. It let you a short window of opportunity to engage. Probably to short for missils. But quick enough for a rockets run or a strafing run with the cannon. When they are on fire, it get easyer to spot the rest of them if they are not to spread out.

THX E.D.: Patch 1.0.1 --> All New Ka-50 Skins
fox_111 replied to NRG-Vampire's topic in DCS: Ka-50 Black Shark
Wow! All the skins I wanted! I was not fond of the previous way of installing skins, so I waited exacly for this! And woot! There is a canadian one! -
He's right. The autor sound like a proud guy that want to shine above the others. But what he described on his tour in Iraq, the trainning he did and the overall tactics he "developped" sounded nice and refreshing. I read No True Glory, and it is a more grim picture of the fighting. I guess it depend on the mood the autor want to set for his book. Some books are umbarably all too patriotics. Make me sick reading them. Other are just down to earth with cold dry facts. I like a little mix of both. Like The Circuit, by Bob Shepherd.

How many Black Shark flight hours have you accumulated?
fox_111 replied to fox_111's topic in DCS: Ka-50 Black Shark
hum... I did a lot of testing and foolish manuvering in impossible to survive test missions... so 300 ish deaths is not representative. Actual number I don't know. All I know is, I try to keep my landing number ABOVE my crashing number. Wich I curently maintain well above! -
I got that one http://www.amazon.ca/Apache-ed-Macy/dp/0007288182/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1246909001&sr=1-1 But the one linked above is a later version and you should get it. I wonder what is added though to warrent re-printing the book for a 3rd version. Damned amazon.ca... I just pre-ordered ArmA2.... They always have something I badly want.

I read A LOT of military books. Sniper one was good IMO, but like most military books, it has too much of the How we got there, and how the chain of comand works bullshit. When I pick a book about a perticular unit or historical engament, I'm looking forward to read about what they did in combat and it was like to be there. I don't want to read about how they got in the army and how the army work... If so, I want to be done reading about it in less than 5 or 10 pages at most. Since the combat side of the story would only last a mear 100 pages, they lace the book with uninteresting crap to make it ticker. It does not add to the story and it get boring. BUT... Sniper One is one of those books that does not have a lot of this boring filler. Just enough to give the feeling of the weight and complexity of the military machine. BUY IT and see by yourself. Ed Macy Apache is great. As it does not have a lot of side filler. Just enough to orient the reader. The book is mostly about the pilot whereabouts. If you are looking about a great military book, let me give you a few: Shooter, by Gunny Sgt. Jack Coughlin, USMC 9/10 Afghan Guerrilla Warfare, by Ali Ahmad Jalali and Lester W. Grau 9/10 (This one is about Mujahadeen and Russian tactics in the 1980 afghan war and before... VERY interesting and well made!) House to house, by David Bellavia, with John R. Bruning 8/10 Trigger men, by Hans Halberstadt 8/10 There are so much more good books, but these are the few I think about for the moment and that I have here.

I do it by dumping all the flares I can. Then, I try to turn tail to the missil while diving for cover, as fast as I can. Beaming the missil will not really work unless you are at max speed and can reach cover in time, as it will only buy you a little time... very little. If you spot the luncher and see it lunch on you, shoot it as fast as possible, if you are lucky, it's a type of missil that neet it's luncher to guide it. The missil will either miss, or self destruct. It saved my ass a few time.

My guess is, there is a set time in the manual and the pilot, using the helicopter stop watch, know when the time is right and the INU is aligned.

Infantry Movement (or, Get Off Your Knee and Run!)
fox_111 replied to ericinexile's topic in DCS: Ka-50 Black Shark
Oh... ratings... Well, it's a war machine simulator... It's not like kids will buy it I think. -
Make sence. Though I never seen it mentionned in my books about the Russian-Afghan war. I got one that is pretty detailled in every type of mission and tactics used by the Mujahadeens. They mentionned how the helicopters operated, what they used and how, but never the bombs. Must have been only in very few occasions.

Infantry Movement (or, Get Off Your Knee and Run!)
fox_111 replied to ericinexile's topic in DCS: Ka-50 Black Shark
I rarely get close enought to notice the infentry running. They die too quickly! :smilewink: But it would be nice if they all did run and die with an annimation. especially if they could decapitate like the real squishy. -
I had several collisions with wingmens... I rarely taxi with them close now. And combat formation is the new standard formation for me. I got a screenshot of my 3 wingmen piling on me in midflight when I'm going straight. That how I noticed how the collision model work.. it's pretty acurate.

DCS: Black Shark User Screenshots Dedicated Thread
fox_111 replied to Teknetinium's topic in Screenshots and Videos
You should not fly into combat with your lights on! You got punished for your mistake. -
I've seen helos with bombs. A Huey with MK82 strapped to it's belly. It's a odd sight. In the game though, I tried the bombs, and I'd say, they are useless except for bombing an erea full of defenseless units. Even then, it's not really practical. I practiced aiming them, and it's still crappy. I prefer spamming them with rockets from a safe distance. You never know if there is a clown down there with an SA-9.

I'd say it prevent the fuel from hitting the ground and poluting, if at low altitude.

Real life tactics for Apache pilots are pretty much: aproach target, shoot and flex out, while wingman shoot and flex out too. Only to both return and do it again. When engaging personels while in air superiority, they to what they call the carousel. Both aircraft turn around the target from a set distance, equaly appart from each other and the target, and one at the time, one engage the target while the other, continuing the turn, is overwatching the scene. I picked those tactics in Ed Macy, Apache. A very good book about British Apache pilots in Afghanistan. Get it on Amazon.

Tanx for the head up. I was sure it was BS related S-F, because my computer is very well maintained and I install few software on it and my CD-DVD burner went bad imediatly after installing the game. Like you mentionned, I will check if there is an interaction between the 2 anti-piracy software. I did not meant to cause a stir or blast S-F or DCS. I just have bad experiences with S-F.

I paid 500$CAN for my Hostas Cougar when it came out. I'd pay no more than 300$ for a metal helicopter hotas. Simply because I will only use it with Black Shark, FSX (no longer play it) and in the futur, DSC-Apache or DSC-Longbow.

Anyone know how to regain control of my CD/DVD burner after installing the game (with Starforce)? Ever since I installer DCS BS, I can't burn CDs anymore. I can do DVDs, but no CDs... And some Cds won't read anymore (BF2 disc for example.) I know that Starforce mess with this kind of hardware. I had troubles on another computer with other starforce protected games (Ubisofts games).

From Cannons back to inner or outer stations
fox_111 replied to AldoUSMC's topic in DCS: Ka-50 Black Shark
"c" to select cannon. This selection overide other selected weapons (missils or rockets). You can see your cannon selected by looking at your virtual stick in the cockpit, you should see the guard raised on the stick. That and the cannon reticule on the HUD. -
I'd also love to have collidable trees. In the mean time, I just avoid them out of principle. Anyway, the one time I tried to take advantage of that "glitch" to stay as low as possible from SAM, I hitted a building hidden in the trees. Instant punishement for "cheating".
