That next you a Thrustmaster Warthog, modeled after the A10 Warthog stick and throttle. There are minor changes, but most would say worth it. (The F-16 uses the same stick as the A10, so that's a bonus!)

You're making me want to upgrade...but will be next year. :D

I'm working on a mission where I want to use map objects as mission targets, but having some trouble doing so. I know I can use MIST to track map object destruction, which is needed because I'll be adding a secondary explosion and smoke effect on destruction. The main issue is the objects are fuel/oil tanks, and their hit points are excessive for such. I can unload a full set of rockets onto the tank and it won't blow up, and that just feels wrong, especially since the mission goal is to take out as many as possible. I experimented with placing a unit by the fuel tanks, but it still feels weird because the damage area isn't exactly on the fuel tank model. (Worked well otherwise, could use that unit to trigger the explosion and smoke, track score, etc) Is there a way to pre-damage a map object so it doesn't take so much to destroy it? Also open to other suggestions on how to implement this. At most, a couple rockets should cause the unit destruction, and for some a guns pass should trigger it. After destruction, need to trigger secondary explosion and smoke, and add points to player score.

Just picked up the A10, watching startup videos makes me think point ctrl will be even better in it than in the f18...- 3421 replies

I'm seriously looking at a R5 3600, I have the R5 1600 now, and it performs quite nicely OCed to 3.5ghz in DCS VR, but a little extra boost would be welcome. :D (I have never built a system for myself using Intel, overpriced for what you get IMHO).

A very popular F-16 sim has a forum with a buy-sell-trade section, and there's a couple Cougar sets in there already upgraded. ;) (I know because I just sold my Cougar Throttle there)

I'd say the TM Warthog stick with TWCS Throttle (which has paddles for rudder) would be an option. and it has the port where if you later get the TM pedals you can plug it right in to the throttle. HAT switches on the stick are important, I'd try to stick with a F-16 style stick if you can. (CH Fighter stick is another good option)

Other requirements might be the cause, AOA, speed, etc. (Someone with the mission might be able to share more). A track file would probably tell us exactly what is the issue.

So this was good timing. Read this thread, learned about mouse wheel on the gear when engines are dead....then next mission took some AAA that took out my electronics, and eventually engines. Got to get the gear out before trying an emergency landing in the dirt. Which worked until touchdown re-aligned me into a tree.

Wags startup video. Multiple times. That's what you need to get you flying, after that... it will take on a life of it's own.

Hey guys! I'm selling a Thrustmaster Cougar Throttle. I found it at a resell store with an excellent retro games section and got really excited because of the DCS F-16 coming out and I thought I had an old sound card with a game port so I could use it. Unfortunately, it seems I threw the card away in a past purge, and then learned it uses a custom pin layout that needs the stick anyway...So now I'm looking to re-coup my cost as I really can't justify spending more on this to make it work right now, especially since I own a Warthog throttle and as a busy dad I only get a couple hours to fly a week. (I've found the adapters and such, just...my brain doesn't let me justify it at this point). As such, I can't verify that it works, only that all buttons and switches feel and appear functional. I do know the resell shop is supposed to test everything they buy, and I've never had a bad purchase there, but given it's the throttle only I don't know how they could properly test it. SOLD

Recommended gear for DCS
A2597 replied to Aviator_George's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
Would not recommend the TFlight Hotas.X, need more HAT switches for DCS. For getting started, I'd say: Thrustmaster 16000 stick and throttle. (Or TWCS Throttle and CH Fighterstick used) Track IR Your upgrade path will then be to add rudder pedals, and a better stick (Warthog, or something similar). -
I noticed an improvement, but I haven't quantified the improvement other than "I can now turn on grass and smoke without killing my FPS". It's a nice touch, and helps.

The responsive code for mobile navigation doesn't look complete. At resolutions below 1024 the menu is currently hidden (and I'm assuming will be replaced with the usual hamburger icon). The mobile menus require extra coding to function, some out of the box options work, but usually worth coding the CSS styles yourself so it looks good, this can be pretty time consuming to get right across multiple devices with multiple pixel densities. Similarly, the text on the main image isn't sized properly on mobile, which reinforces that the responsive CSS is in progress. Stay tuned and I bet it will be working as expected. :) (Sorry, web developer here, I live and breath this stuff)- 3421 replies

Awesome video that shows what DCS looks like in a wide FOV VR HMD!
A2597 replied to glassy99's topic in Virtual Reality
This is part of my concern as well. The other part is I'd need a new CPU,GPU, and then the lighthouses and Pimax headset. We're talking over $2000 in upgrades, closer to 3000, for a wider FOV. Just not convinced of the return on investment over my Oculus CV1 at this time. -
Yea, I'll be buying this, no question
-
Oh I didn't even think about control setup. Yes, a Thrustmaster TWCS throttle at the minimum if you are going to fly the HOG. You need those HAT switches!

Welcome to the DCS community! Lots of folks here willing to help out! My best advice is this... don't try and learn everything at once, you can't. I've been playing for 8 months in a single plane (The F-18) and I've had fun the entire time learning how to fly, taking it bit by bit, I'm only just beginning to be a competent pilot in a combat situation. Don't consider yourself slow, just inexperienced in flying a combat jet. (Like the vast majority here, we do have some military and former military pilots here). I'm 34, my dad is 70 and an IFR pilot and says I pick things up much faster than him....it still took me months, and I know I have years ahead of me to become "good". So, first rule of flying: Fly the Plane. Learn the plane, learn some procedures and practice them. Etc. The A-10 is a study level aircraft, so every button, switch and dial works. It's a change from the SU-25, but also adds a whole new level of immersion. It goes from being a plane game to a flight simulator when you have to flip the switches, wait for the APU to spin up, etc. For practice, what I did was create "safe" training environments, slowly stepping up the skill level needed. I used the quick mission generator, hit advanced, and turned AAA and SAM sites off for red force. I'd set enemy fighters to none when I first started too, this essentially gave me a massive target practice range where I could learn CCIP bombing, mavericks, etc, start learning to shoot AA missiles at enemy helicopters, and just...take it slow. And yes, I died in these missions, Turns out tanks still have mounted machine guns. They can still hit you. LOL Eventually, I added in a couple enemy fighters. (Easy AI, then worked my way up). Took me MUCH longer to finally beat SAM sites and harder enemy fighters. Honestly felt like anytime I saw an enemy fighter I was resigned to die. Same for SAM sites. Youtube helped me immensely in learning some tactics for missile evasion, and how to fight back. So my advice? Go slow, learn one thing at a time. What that one thing is being whatever strikes your fancy. I started just wanting to fly a fast plane at low levels. Didn't take long to hit that checkbox. Then I wanted to drop bombs. Hence, quick mission 'safe' zones. That led to learning how to shoot missiles. Leading to air to air combat, leading to learning the Radar, then the RWR, etc etc.
