You don't need the Steam version of DCS . But you do need to download STEAM VR , and for that i'm pretty sure you need a steam account. So yes, you need a steam account , but you don't need to have DCS on that steam account. The DCS non-steam version will work fine. So all you need STEAM-account for is to download Steam VR.

WQHD screen for flight sims
Csgo GE oh yeah replied to Alfredson007's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
Good lord. I just started up DCS in 2d . (with LG GN 850B ultrawide) . I was kind of disappointed by how GOOD it looked compared to VR . And i play at 300% in VR supersampling with the Reverb. I might get back to track-ir and 2d ! . Man, i had never even looked at DCS in 2d after i got my Reverb (back then i had a 1920x1080 16:9). I mean, VR gives you more immersion but, i'm also a sucker for nice graphics. And i got 160 fps to boot ! -

I am confident that ED will clear all this right up . (press x to doubt) -
WQHD screen for flight sims
Csgo GE oh yeah replied to Alfredson007's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
I have a reverb (VR) , and also a ultra wide monitor (3440x1440P) . Honestly, both are awesome for flight sims. Motion sickness is not a concern with a monitor ever , and in VR the motion sickness is gone in a short while. If you don't like VR, i would definately recommend the ultra wide screen. It gives a more spacious feel than a normal screen. -

That ^ article is 3,5 years old. And it's incorrectly worded. It displays the exact same number as gpu-z and the other programs. ""A few examples - if you look at Shadow of the Tomb Raider, Assassin’s Creed Odyssey, Metro Exodus, Wolfenstein Youngblood, Gears of War 5, Borderlands 3 and Red Dead Redemption 2 running on a 3080 at 4k with Max settings (including any applicable high res texture packs) and RTX On, when the game supports it, you get in the range of 60-100fps and use anywhere from 4GB to 6GB of memory."" And with that in mind, you honestly think that DCS is 'using" 10GB of Vram, while sitting in the splash screen ? Come on man that's impossible :d I've PM'd 'bignewy' , i hope he can walk up to a dev and get some ballpark number, or SOMETHING. -

Did some actual 'measurement' with some "DLL hooking" thing called 'special K' . I could not for the life of me get it to work with DCS, but i did get it to work with Resident Evil 3 remake. The number that gpu-z, and windows show looks like allocated, not used. Settings used in RE3 were 3440x1440 (+ 200% supersampling) // textures highest at '8gb' whatever that means, and all other settings set to highest as well (smaa, hboa, all the good stuff). I only had one saved game (saved over the same game many times :( ), but in bigger areas you can get the Vram usage up to 8 GB in that game. I have no idea if this translates to DCS at all, considering RE3 is a modern game, and DCS is ... not. I do know that the numbers you see with gpu-z and windows task manager are bullshit though. I also do not know why in DCS, when pressing control + pause, the 'mem' thing shows 0.0 mb and not give us a number. Maybe ED don't have a clue themselves as well. -
I tried all day yesterday to get an actual V-ram USAGE reading with "special K" . Can't get it to work. :( DId get it to work in Resident Evil 3 remake. At 3440x1440P , with 200% supersampling (So in effect 2x resolution , almost 10 milion pixels) , all options highest and textures set to "8K" , that game was actually using around 8 GB of Vram. That's about half of 'allocated' V-ram. But,... completely different game, probably much better coded as well. So how this relates to DCS, i have no clue.

@High TE=Gunnars Driver;n7131022]Logging in to a certain server is starts with 15.6Gb wich after a few seconds increases to 15.6 and then 15.7Gb. When selecting aircraft the reported VRAM increases to 17.1Gb. This is the Fpsvr values and the performance tab in windows show a little bit more( fpsvr onfly shos the actual thread usage and not all processes of windows. The windows desktop probably accounts for the difference between these two. After a while I se 18.1Gb in fpsvr, increasing steady to 19.3Gb. You still think the GPU only uses 7Gb or so(this discussion was present when Nvidia increased the VRAM from 8 to 11Gb also, at that times "it never went pass 8Gb). If it uses a lower value, Why on earth would it progressively increase the allocation to 19.3GB ? During this flight, after landing it decreased the reported memory to 17.3-17.5Gb, as seen in the picture. When closing DCS the reported VRAM in the task manager is 2.3Gb, so that add up. Heres a statment refering to microsoft that the performance tab reports the used VRAM and not the allocated: https://www.extremetech.com/computin...reators-update This might be an interresting read: You probalby could use GPUView if you dont believe microsoft. [Edit]Bugger! I seem to have moved the fpsvr in the pic below so that the VRAM usage cannot be seen. Hey man i completely missed this post. Thank you for this, i'm going to investigate . Edit* Well i don't know what is going on at all. 10GB fills up just from entering the game . Then i load a mission , fly around, it stays filled up but never touches the 'shared gpu VRAM' . Meanwhile i'm at 55 fps, with 300% supersampling and 2xmsaa, visibility range extreme, and textures @ high in VR with the Reverb. If i was struggling with Vram i would suspect less smoothness and lower FPS . I still think that graph shows allocated by the game, not used. And i think in the task manager bar, the 'allocated' is just the amount of Vram on your card. gpu-z also shows the exact same number as task manager. Multiplayer is even weirder, but i think that has a lot to do with the framerate of the server you play on. Reminds me of ARMA. Everything would be ok after a fresh server restart, then 10 minutes later the server is running at 2 fps, and everybody is having a terrible experience. I wish ED would stop making new modules for a while and just get that new engine out. I'm reliving ARMA nightmares right now. -

3080 still almost impossible to buy , 3090 is slowly becoming a little available. And i do get the Vram sentiment. I mean i would also rather have 24 GB . But 1000 dollars more, just for the chance it may be a little better in DCS , i can't sell that to myself. That's why i SO MUCH WANT ED to respond and say something about VRAM usage !! Because don't get me wrong, i'll ALMOST to go full retard and buy the weird 3090 instead :D -
2 weeks. Sounds familiar. So it must be true ... -_- :d

No we're not sure it doesn't use more than 11GB. That's why i'm desperately trying to get something out of ED on this matter. But they may not even know themselves :( . However, going by allocated memory may not be the wisest. When i play resident evil 2 , crank everything up , the game allocates 15 GB of VRAM . But not a single hickup, and still above 100 fps. There's also no sudden 'drop off' point when i increase VRAM allocation over the 11GB framerate wise. I just wish ED could tell us a bit more about it, but as it stands now it may be to soon to start recommending a card that's twice as expensive for what could only be a 6-11% increase in the most optimum cases . In fact, at this point if i had no interest in raytracing/RTX , and was only playing DCS i'd buy an AMD card instead. Here some microsoft FS : So altough it could well be that the extra Vram actually helps, we're far from sure. I've also seen other people post very different results than yours. -

Guys please stop posting gpuz screens that only show "ALLOCATED" vram. That says almost nothing about actual usage, and almost nothing about how much Vram you actually need. If you're all buying 3090's because of 'allocated' Vram, well then whoopsie i guess. I've made a thread asking ED to shed some light on ACTUAL vram usage, but i don't think they even have a clue themselves. Apparently it's not something WE can 'measure', this info needs to come from ED but they don't know either i suspect. https://forums.eagle.ru/forum/english/reality/pc-hardware-and-related-software/290411-dear-ed-could-you-please-give-us-some-insight-in-vram-usage -
AIM-54 Changes / new API fixes are live in today's patch
Csgo GE oh yeah replied to IronMike's topic in DCS: F-14A & B
So am i reading this correct ? The aim54 is now equipped with stealth technology ? How does this even happen? Why does it only happen to phoenix ? Is this also why F14 can turn cold from 100nm and still take out AWACS ? -
So now apparently due to a 'mistake' the aim54 doesn't give any RWR warning when it goes active. This missile was hilarious from the second the F14 got released , and is becoming a running joke. I hope servers will disable the PH missiles, at least until this is resolved, yet again.

Switching between BVR and Dogfight mode while keeping radar settings: There's a way around this problem. I figured out how to switch between amraam mode and dogfight mode while keeping my radar settings. (this only works as long as you have at least 1 amraam in store) 1) From nav mode you go into "main A-A". Now you can set your radar stuff , and right MFD settings to whatyou like. 2) When that's done, you press dogfight mode with "dogfight/Missile override switch - Dogfight/Center". Now you can again adjust your right MFD to show what you want. 3) Now when you want to return to BVR mode (main A-A with the settings you set before), you simply press dogfight mode AGAIN. So you basically use the dogfight mode as a toggle switch. You do have set your MFD range scale again because when switching back it's set to 10nm , but at least you're in TWS mode or whatever you selected. This also works if you have sidewinders + amraams, when switching out of dogfight mode your radar will return to TWS mode, but like i said, you do have to set the scale again as it's set to 10nm, and if you have sidewinders, then you need to switch missiles as well. Dropping fuel tanks: There's also a weird thing when dropping fuel tanks. To keep my radar settings, i only drop my tanks while i'm in NAV mode. So from BVR mode i press "A-A main" to toggle out of AA mode and go into NAV mode. Then i go to Jettison menu and drop tanks. After i dropped my tanks, i first GET OUT of jettison menu, and only THEN switch back to BVR mode . I guess the most important thing when navigating these menu's is to use the buttons as toggle buttons. If you switch from dogfhigt mode to BVR mode by pressing 'main A-A" or something stuff gets weird. So when you want to go from dogfight mode to BVR mode, you should press dogfight mode AGAIN , this will return you to your previous mode and (most of) the settings.
