  1. The difficulty you run into is the "Not for Export" on lots of sites that sell the different manuals. eflightmanuals used to have a lot more F-14 manuals listed but they seem to have pulled a few off of sale now.
  2. Certainly has made interesting reading for me, my background was radar and navigation systems and have always had a hobby in photography, which lead me to my final employment of working with CCTV systems for an international manufacturer of cameras and associated systems. But yeah there are more manuals than you can shake a stick at and they each bring their own nugget of information and some things that remain constant across all of them. I have many gigabytes of info about my favourite jet, the EE Lightning, and that is only scratching the surface of it, the F-14 is a much more complicated aircraft and must have a lot more info about how the systems work etc. The F-14 is my favourite US aircraft and I am really looking forward to seeing Heatblur's rendition of it in DCS favourite WW2 aircraft is the Westland Whirlwind, a twin engined single seat attack aircraft with 4 nose mounted 20mm cannons. My father was stationed at one of the airfields they operated out of during WW2, RAF Tangmere.
  3. Just started reading Roger Ball the biography of John "Hawk" Smith and the bit I am at he has just been put on the F14 program... and he has still got 2 years to go before they get an actual airframe Hurry up and wait :D
  4. Some good description of how it works in the link in this post: https://forums.eagle.ru/showpost.php?p=3708144&postcount=12
  5. The store had a lot more Haynes Manuals for aircraft but the wife would have objected to me throwing out her clothes to get them into the suitcase for the flight home :D
  6. Thanks for that link, quite interesting. Once you get to the bit about the TCS system that gives much better figures for the field of view with the wide field being 1.5° and the narrow field of view being around 0.5° which is comparable to what I get with my 10" f10 telescope, which uses the same sort of Cassegrainian optics, using a medium powered eyepiece. The 30° figure is the amount the optics gimbal can swing through, with up to 30°/sec slew speed and optical stabilisation of up to 150°/sec The vidicon tubes are sensitive to wavelengths outside of the human eyeball range especially into the IR end of the spectrum, I was surprised at how IR sensitive they were when I first pointed a tubed camera at fire that had newly gone out and I could still see flames leaping up from the embers on screen and to the eye it was just grey ash.
  7. aprox what size is the objective lens? 4", 6", 8"? from that with a 30° field of view we can work out magnification etc. But 30° is quite wide angle and I can't really see that being able to identify a fighter sized target at 10 miles, so I have my doubts on that particular figure other than for a wide angle overview.
  8. it also featured in Argonaut Games's Birds of Prey Had many happy hours playing that on the Amiga and the F14A+ could supercruise at Mach 2 :D
  9. I'm happy that I have a grandson that is crazy about aircraft, makes getting "purchases" past the financial controller a bit easier :D He even lets me drag him to the local airshows, and has been allowing me to do that since he was 2 :) His first airshow, Sanicole 2012 Belgian Airforce Days 2018 Yeah being a grandad is great :)
  10. There would be a doppler shift even in a ground launched / ground radar illuminated Hawk missile engagement as the illuminated target is moving with respect to the ground radar. While the extremes of the frequency shift can be greater in an airborne engagement they will still be there on a ground/air engagement just to a lesser extent.
  11. She could carry a few MK82s tho. Iranian From the Haynes Manual
  12. Browsing the local discount book store I found this: Got my reading sorted for a few days and for only £6 too, a bargain :)
  13. Pass the zimmer frame :megalol:
  14. Here the fiscal year starts January 1st, and in the UK the financial year starts 5th April  I guess you takes your pick :)
  15. Another couple for you:
  16. My Grandson is most disappointed in that he cannot vote on this poll, he has been flying on DCS since he was 2 and he is now 8
  17. The other part of the compromise was she helped me build a home cinema, which I do use for gaming too but not that often. My wife painting the projection screen The rest of the pics here: https://imgur.com/a/nImHm
  18. Hey it was Decca Radar I worked for and on fishing boats not Tomcats :music_whistling:
  19. Even the U-2 was carrier capable, there were a couple of variants specifically made for operations from a carrier, USS Kitty Hawk had the pleasure of the first landing of a U-2G in 1963, later USS Ranger in 1964 and USS America in 1969 with the U-2R. I first read about it in Chris Pocock's book Dragon Lady: The history of the U2 spy plane.
  20. Oh I don't mind both, but personally I would have an A-6 before an A-7, the A-7 just doesn't do it for me.
  21. I would have the A-6 long before an A7 thank you.
  22. It was there from the manufacturer Lockheed Martin, as was the Eurofighter simulator from theirs. It compares well with pictures I have seen, the screens are configurable and touch sensitive, when I was in the Eurofighter it was all done with the HOTAS and I never needed to take my hands off the controls except to raise and lower the undercarriage. Where we were there were quite a few high ranking officers from various countries and a few manufacturers selling their wares Dassault, Eurofighter Consortium, Lockheed-Martin, Pratt & Whitney to name a few. Sorry no pics of the Eurofighter simulator it was behind closed curtains but I did get a shot in it and was surprised that the demo guy was from close to where I live in Scotland. How close these are to the real aircraft I cannot say but they are really sales tools and what we experienced in it was very much simplified.
  23. Was a good show I was there on Saturday only had my phone with me though
  24. Great day was had by both of us, I never took my camera with me as I just wanted to enjoy the show. My grandson was the first into the VIP compound and to get a go on the Euro fighter simulator, I was second and loved that curved screen and triple projector, really makes you feel like it is real (DCS graphics is better tho!) standing there as the demonstrator moved the aircraft around your inner ear got fooled and you were bracing against the movement your eyes could see, weird feeling that :) I got a go from take off to a little aerobatics and then shooting down a hostile target and landing, it must have been on easy mode as it was too easy, but fun, I WANT ONE! :joystick::pilotfly: An empty terrace and getting installed: Still getting their gear off the Osprey: Two Havards and a Beechcraft: Getting ready for lunch: KC135 SU27 F16 + Spitfire F35 Lightning II Simulator
  25. We had a go in the Eurofighter simulator very jealous :)
