  9. Two separate lightning strikes into Finnish Air Force Pilatus PC-12's cost over 1 million euros to repair http://www.hs.fi/kotimaa/a1392003069586?jako=cabeb8636f480287f13454b500413f65&ref=tw-share The news site is in Finnish so I'll summarize: "Two Finnish Air Force Pilatus PC-12 aircraft were struck by lightning on two separate occasions in 2011 and 2013. There were no malfunctions caused by the strikes. The lightnings struck the aircraft's propellers and exited from the rear fuselage. There was lot's of damage throughout the fuselage but the biggest cost was caused by the need to demagnetize the engine. The aircraft had to be transported to Switzerland by road."

    P-40

My favorite warbird! No other plane wears the shark mouth so well. All other planes trying are just bad attempts to look as cool as the P-40!
  13. That's impossible both in practice and theory. There is a constant airflow in the right direction, you can count on it.

  15. According to Wiki, it's a weather phenomenon so I guess aircraft static electricity discharge is not. St. Elmo's Fire does happen on aircraft though: http://www.airliners.net/photo/VietJet-Air/Airbus-A320-214/2283467/M/&sid=3f9bbe69ac6f58607e271e2a2f21d422 In this picture, you can see two grounding wicks under main landing gear: http://sitelife.aviationweek.com/ver1.0/Content/images/store/14/11/3eaab8f1-8a8c-48d3-bbb4-b276be9e958f.Full.jpg In this picture you can see two on the fin: http://www.b-domke.de/AviationImages/NH90/Images/NH90_NFH_N-110_31666.jpg

  17. Just go to Youtube and search for "boat grenade". It looks like a movie making scene with a defective fuse.
  18. Does anyone know where I could find a certain video from an Apache squadron in Iraq or Afghanistan? It was like a TV-series intro with intro music from the seventies where each person was introduced in a funny way and every once in a while there were close ups of some dude's ass in really short shorts. I would really appreciate if someone knows where to find it!
  19. Your videos are truly superb! France has an awesome war machine and some of the most beautiful aircraft. May I ask about your involvement in these videos? Do you compile videos from different pilots/aircraft or do you fly yourself too? I'm ok if you're not comfortable saying. :)

  23. Ok, it's been a while since I have been close to avionics despite that I'm supposed to be an avionics technician. VOR is not a smart instrument containing complex computer for calculating angles. VOR shows the deviation of an aircraft from the selected radial and it's simply determined by the phase differences in two signals. I don't know exactly how a TACAN operates but it's not too much different IIRC. HSI combines the functionality of a VOR indicator, an ADF indicator and a compass. ADF is also a very simple using only radio signals to determine the direction. To know how it works you need to know how each of those systems work. HSI is an excellent instrument that combines all of them into one clear display.
  24. Just popped here by chance and funnily enough I remember M. Pavlov saying on Russian forum that in mountainous area they couldn't use the laser. They used airspeed, angle and the grid sight instead. I have no idea if what you are experiencing is modeled on purpose or is it a bug but it could happen in real life.
