  1. Twice the power that system uses seems like a huge overkill but... I threw in 40 % of capacitor aging in the calculator (which would hopefully make up several years of service) and now it's starting to make sense. There's room for aging and, if I for some reason, decide to get silly and get a second GPU for example, then there should be plenty of room. I read two guides and neither suggested to get twice the power of your draw. The budget seems to skyrocket so I decided to put a 150 € cap on it for PSU. These two came out as winners: XFX 850W XXX Edition, semi modular, 80 Plus Silver Silverstone 850W, Strider Plus, ATX 2.3, modulaarinen, 80 Plus Silver Both have great reviews but I might go for the Silverstone because of the size. It would allow me to put a bottom fan in my case. I don't care for modularity but why not. Only running the CPU at 3.2 GHz and won't OC until I get a new cooler. Propably will get an SSD before that and only then will overclock both CPU and GPU. Do you think the +80 ratings make a differense that's worth paying for if you get a quality PSU anyway? What's wrong with Bronze rating against Gold for example? Doesn't seem to differ much in performance but the price rockets! It's great to hear your opinions chaps. :)
  2. Hello gents, now that the situation looks more stable financially, I'll continue the upgrade. I've chosen HD 7870 as my future card thanks to Tom's Hardware best bang for the money comparison. This brings the problem of a new PSU. Someone suggested a 800W PSU which to me seems like a total overkill. My calculations with Thermaltakes PSU calculator that the recommended PSU wattage will be 379 W, which is almost the maximum wattage of my 12 V rails. Also being a cheap 500 W power supply this is definately scary for the expensive graphics card! Even if I calculate my future planned setup overclocked and at full load with that calculator, it still doesn't reach 500 W. So what would be a reasonable headroom wattage wise? 600? 700? At Tom's Hardware, an enthusiast's system would only draw around 500 W. Right now seems like a quality, good effieciency PSU would be enough well into the future. What do you think?
  3. Some random Finnish metal band doing a music video on the streets and at 2:07 cops don't catch the drift. :D
  4. Thanks, that makes sense! I assume there are no traditional NAV/COM systems and these are only ones in use? Asking this because usually these Garmin GPS/COM's have been just retrofitted to GA aircraft and the additional COM is just a "bonus" to the existing ones. Very nice video and views (jealous)! I hear pilots really like that chopper.
  5. I've wondered, why do some aircraft have up to 3 GPS systems like here on the top part of the panel? All Garmin, propably NAV/COM and I've even seen some have two exactly the same big ones and one of the small ones.
  6. http://www.jsf.mil/contact/con_faqs.htm Found via Wikipedia. :)
  7. Well this thing is very far away from passenger travel and there are interesting projects in that field. http://hypermach.com/ Especially read the engine technology part. Sounds like some scifi thing!

  9. Obviously not many really have had the same problem. All I can think of is to send you my original graphics.cfg but first, which version of the sim do you have? My file is for DCS World 1.2.0.
  10. Until any other fighter aircraft in the world can do that, it IS new and impressive, and certainly has not been around for decades.
  11. That's really interesting stuff OutOnTheOP! Thanks for sharing, I've been watching that lecture and reading alot on the Thorium subject despite not having any advanced physics training. It's amazing that such superior no brainer design hasn't been developed for mass scale after all these years! If I get fired, I might apply for a university and try to become a physicist! So much interesting things in nuclear and astrophysics. :)

  13. This! However I would like to know more about the abilities of the SM. Doesn't look too convincing though.
  14. Here's a fix for the sound bug. I hope this one applies: http://forums.eagle.ru/showthread.php?t=91666 TrackIR is ESSENTIAL! Get it! Many people have become pilots or other aviation professionals due to their simming hobby. Tell her that you are chasing your dream and this is what you love to do! If this doesn't work, do as Jona says :D About vortex ring state. Don't descend vertically. You will get into VRS very very easily, more than 3 m/s vertical speed and you're on! Have some airspeed and check helicopter videos, that's why they rarely descend vertically from anything but few meters.
  15. I don't think anyone has been saying about completely stopping them. But if pilot doesn't act correctly, there is a point after which the RPM can not be restored and is fatal in real life. Helicopter professionals here have said that the DCS Ka-50 is way too forgiving.
  16. Not necessarily. Things might seem to work as normal but in some environmental sweet spot things just go wrong. It's hard to find such things and a common task for mechanics to troubleshoot something that works on ground but malfunctions randomly in flight. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boeing_737_rudder_issues
  17. When I was as a conscript in air force and army aviation as a mechanic I was a passenger in NH90 a few times and once in MD500 which I could control for a couple of minutes. NOE in NH90 was pretty cool from the back but the MD500 was an awesome experience! The pilot took me NOE, very confined space landings and showed me how a helicopter can be very effective in spying on farmers. :D Also flying over fields and have tractors whizz by close below was something that I won't forget! Been a passenger in an Mi-8 and C172. I flew a C152 for 20 minutes and got my name in the logbook once. And also I flew a Finnish F-18 simulator for about 15 minutes. A couple landings were quite rough but nailed the last one. :)
  18. I don't know how combat ready they are (might be perfectly ready) but personally feel that there are many much better suited helicopters to do combat missions so why use Sharks? I wonder how many are left flying though. Something between 5 and 10? With modern technology and good funding the Shark could be made a very capable combat helicopter even if not as efficient as it's big brother. It just wasn't there back then.
  19. I have been searching through hundreads of photos of Ka-50 and nowhere have I seen any extra flare dispensers. Not even on Ka-52 where they would certainly be installed if deemed necessary. It might be one of those R-73 kind of hoaxes. There is really no "latest" version of Ka-50. Most of them are very different from each other for testing different things I suppose and the DCS Ka-50 is definately not the oldest one still operational. Many airframes are already rotting away... The remaining aircraft will be left for training, airshows and testing if lucky. Most likely them will be disbanded after their flight hours are full. Some examples: Still flying number 27 MWS installed but no DIRCM turrets. However the round turret mounting pads are visible in front of landing gear. MWS sensor visible behind the black nose and one in the tail. Here are the turrets and MWS sensor in the back blanked with red cover. And here's a weird one. The only photo I've seen of this upgrade. Would I want to see the sensors in DCS? Most definately I would! :)
  20. I'v heard everything is bigger in America. Horizontally too. :D
  21. Did you import your old controls to DCSW?
  22. ^Seems there is!^ I guess it has a new fuse installed.
  23. There was also a web radio mod. You could modify the frequencies file to match real radio frequencies in that area and when tuned in game, you would start hearing a live webcast! I think it was really cool. :) But I don't really miss it really. Much better things for dev's to do.
  24. Yeah it's bloody rainy... At least we are not in south Russia or Japan! :D
