  1. (we need a key binding for the new 'hide camera')
  2. You're describing KLM pilots who hand-fly ILS landings all the time, any weather (this I heard while ago) because they 'need their competence up to par' is their excuse. I also heard Asian liners don't allow their pilots ILS hand flying (CAT whatever), which actually caused several (deadly) misfortunes, but they'll have probably fixed that through more pilot training now. Then again Schiphol airport not too long ago discovered pilots (Afghanistan Airlines or something) were flying with fake falsified pilot licenses, and all their flights were cancelled by Schiphol pronto until they would see proof of a fix. How about that.
  3. ehm that's bad, bummer, ACLS is great fun. That's his/OP point, landing in 0% viz, 100% black. In DCS if you just have 1 light pixel which is on the boat, to fly the last 3 or 1 mile in (know where that pixel is on the boat helps) you can stay on the glideslope. I would think its either impossible or non-repeatable in 100% black, but he definitely should try that anyway ;) I guess in really really bad weather, the Boat Boss will just light the boat up like a torch?
  4. a. "where the ball is not in view, or at least discernible in the video " but maybe was in reality by just a speck, would be my bet, I'd say because that gives you the opportunity. or, b. if you happen to be on the needles 3nm out in DCS in full blackness just keep practicing staying on the needle for a boat that is slowly crawling to the right, and do his 255 times (start wind 0), I bet you have 50% chance to trap a wire, otherwise c. do 1555 times more, and I guarantee you'll have 51% chance of trapping.
  5. ACLS is exactly invented for weather like this, I'd say, and I severely doubt when viz is less than the threshold (and more), you're allowed by the boat boss to land by hand, and make yourself a severe risk to the boat, the crew, not to mention you might kill the boss if he happens to be in the Island when you plough through it. Then again DCS is a sim, and off course you must try if you are able to do this.
  6. I discovered this "DLC / Maneuver Flaps Retract" Axis now, to manually induce Maneuver Flap, indeed. Fancy. Won't deploy over 300kts in instant free flight, will retract @ 320kts when deployed. Will extend DCS instant take off, hot on the runway. With a TMWH I assigned the Throttle slider, that slider only does 50% (dumb, what) value on X, if saturation X set to 50, this will do 100%, you cannot 'Invert' this slider to 100%
  7. Go seat two, select, do 'next launch', go seat 1. But OP does not want to do that .. he wants to stay in seat 1, because he paid USD 80, and he is a stubborn SOA*.
  8. Jester: - Next Target .. ? if only
  9. What I do (newbee coming from F18 ) to compensate ACL wire-#2 propensity is rhythmically click DLC-aft to force an ACL 'overshoot', don't just hold DLC because that will be auto-corrected back to a short landing, until the VV is exactly there for wire-#3 (that's at the threshold), and either I just let go or tap DLC-fwd if I deem necessary. I think it correlates with wind-over-deck, not sure, of the top of my head in own ME mission, with higher wind-over-deck the ACL does 3-wire. YMMV.
  10. Requesting "Startup" on a Supercarrier will not work 98% of the time anyway, don't use this as an example. The one necessary radio contact is 'Inbound' for the Boat. What I do. The solid way to setup ATC/Jester-TAC boat comms for any frequency inc. 127.5 is - Tell Jester to set his AN/ARC-182 radio (menu-menu-"1") - Tell Jester to "TUNE TAC RADIO" ("8") which is the Boat radio - so Not 'ATC' which are airfields according to Jester - Then choose the boat from the options / the other options being Tankers and AWACS ( Jester appears to have Boat ATC grouped with Tankers and AWACS ) - rear ARC-182 now set properly - any frequency possible ( Jester appears to override any Presets from the ME, so then switches to Manual Freq. or CH # if there is a correct Preset, and which now shows either the correct Preset CH or the manual TAC Freq of the boat being dialed in, in the bottom repeater in the Pilot seat) - Now to punch in Radio AN/ARC-182 from the front seat you key : " RCTRL + \ " (so not just " \ " as per EZ or " RAlt+ \ " for the front ARC-159 radio) - The header above the radio comms menu will say and Has To Say" " VHF / UHF ARC-182 " which is the correct rear seat radio for any comms inc. lower that 225. - Then the standard F5 'ATC' - Then pick the Boat from the list - Select "Inbound" (F1) et voila, whatever the Boat frequency, use the back radio through Jester, Jester appears to read the Boat frequency straight from the mission file, never wrong. BTW Jester TACAN TAC RADIO is sometimes borked, you do this twice (2x) in succession, and that fixes that (doesn't set the last digit correct first time, sometimes)
  11. Training ME setup, I position the aircraft in the air, load, un-pause, I then say 'setup', and 10 VA commands execute as from a machine gun, and after this died down, I am in altitude hold, and my comm connections and screens are set up, I can now open my radio by saying 'radio' and contact ATC by 'ATC' voice. :)
  12. F14 newbee here ( DCS F18 pilot ) I'm surprised ACL is not in this thread, this was the first thing ( this F14 has a long learning curve ) I investigated ( coming from MSFS, flying liners SID and STAR for decades). Got this figured out now ( fly like a Beech Baron), just be right on the numbers. Then again I cannot imagine that if you're somewhat, or more, off the numbers ( I discovered testing ) the ACL keeps driving the plane, to quite improbable limits, then again highly entertaining. Pity this certain F14 pilot - I read - in this forum apparently was stopped disclosing how the F14 flies but is seems technically either the ACLS should give up doing this roller coaster thing by just disconnecting, or, to the extend how it can be made to pull your plane's G's should have a limit ( I favor the latter, because that's still entertaining ). Or perhaps this is exactly what the F14 did? Which would be swell :) When one has the plane somewhat precise on the numbers, this ACL is completely fantastic btw. ( Hint: Anyone can PM me a still existing copy from this guy? If it's in an embargo it must be good, I am european, no worry, much appreciated )
  13. Actually ACLS with me seems to work all the time. Huge difference with flying the F18. You want to have the right sequence so ACL actually triggers, and in particular you want then to be in the right position on the needles and with A/T AOA 15, when you let ACL take over. The better you are maneuvered in the right position when intercepting ( <4nm ) the smoother ACL comes in, if not, it creates quite the horrible roller coaster, just avoid that. Your maneuvers need to be smooth and under control to get there, and it's easy with that done.
  14. F14 newbie here, DCS F18 pilot, created this list - boat ATC frequency needs dialled in, if > 225 use pilot radio, if 127.5 only Jester radio can be used RCtrl-\ - ATC boat needs to be notified 'Inbound' for ACL ready and kick in or nothing will happen - Jester connect DataLink with boat as HOST (don't need ILS, but for backup) - Jester dial Navigation TACAN TAC to the boat - know the boat BRC (ATC will mention), in the briefing or click boat on the F10 map - FB of the landing deck for training can be easier FB = BRC - 9°, compensate when inbound - dial in this BRC or FB with HSI knob for the HSI TACAN for course intercept, this is copied to BDHI - dial CH of ILS of the boat for intercept VDI/HSD ACL/ILS course, and as a backup - keep checking TACAN Bearing Heading Indicator (BDHI) / HSD for bearing, intercept course and distance and alt - VDI Mode LDG landing / Steer Mode AWL / HUD ACL / VDI ACL ( plan to intercept the ILS from below, f.i. be 1500ft at 6-7nm, whilst maintaining altitude, CASE I is 800ft, but prob not done ACL, if flying CASE II or III you will fly level 1200' from about 12nm straight in ) - start, call in 'see you at 10' if so - Hook Down - first Speedbrake FULL / Wings Auto / Gear DWN 250kts / Flaps 200kts ( cut throttle for a sec / DLC optional when ACL ) - Main Autopilot Switch ON ( necessary for both Autothrottle and ACL, Nose Wheel Button will activate ACL ) - ACL switch DOWN, ready ( 'VOICE' warning light switches ON, you're connected but out of range ) - slow down approaching the boat, 7nm out max 200kts flap speed is OK, - slow down nearing the boat ( landing speed = ~120kts, ~150kts is OK for switching AOA Autothrottle ) - Autothrottle ON for on-speed AOA 15 units ( you cannot have Zero throttle switching A/T, Autopilot Main Switch needs ON, ALT hold disables, AOA goes to 15 units, gear needs down) - < 7nm out 'LANDING CHK' warning light will have switched ON ( ACL connection is in range and OK ) - on-speed AOA-15, level out underneath GS, maintaining 1200ft is NATOPS safe, keep your VS on the horizon on-speed - get and keep your ACL/ILS vertical needle centred ( Stern Light RED, you're left, GREEN you're right, Blinking you're close, BROWN you're aligned ) - < 4nm out, ACL READY and A/P CPLR warning lights switch ON ( system is ready for Nose Wheel Button ) - with Vertical needle centred and Horizontal needle close coming down, - click Nose Wheel Button (N) ( in DCS your stick has to be neutral here ) - call in 'Tomcat BALL' (if Supercarrier) - 'CMD CONTROL' warning light switches ON - let go of everything, ACL flies the plane ( ACL will now intercept the horizontal needle from below (this is why) and guide descent ) ( stand by to go Full Throttle, for a sec only, then cut to military, when trapping ) - a 10 SECOND light switches ON ( for CASE III night trapping ) - you will catch 3 wire - Military Throttle, Stop, Hook UP, hit Nose Wheel Button (NWS warning light switches ON) - Flaps UP, Wings back (needs Flaps up), - clear deck, radio 'Deck Green' (think I got it all, YMMV, there was a guide by a RL pilot but it appears he was stopped, this is how I do it now)
  15. (Finally started w. F14, I had for ages) Radio's weird, set up a mission, tested radio SC THR freq 225 and 127.5 AM PILOT 159-radio set preset channel 1 to 225 in ME - PILOT top remote defaults to (preset?) 243 - wht freq is that, not in the presets - PILOT preset channel select button will not rotate, so no presets for PILOT radio that is stuck in 243? - PILOT radio so only works manual? - PILOT radio cannot do 127.5?? (Anything below 225) RIO 182-radio tested channel 1 set to 225 and 127.5 'AM' in ME corresponding to boat - this "FM" dropdown in ME does not work? Jester JESTER menu won't switch AM to FM? All ATC freq. are AM? In all practicality the procedure for recovery is - JETSER menu set TACAN to boat, RIO TACAN is the default TACAN - PILOT sets ILS (is this necessary for ACL landing?) - JESTER menu set to boat as datalink HOST for ACL landing - PILOT uses RIO-radio for comms if boat freq. is 127.5 But for RIO radio if freq. is 127.5, JESTER is not really needed for recovery, what does RealLife do, who does comms? Resume: PILOT radio not fully implemented, use RIO radio instead? Set TACAN in PILOT seat in VR is a pain in the butt, so use JESTER and use his, right. thx
  16. This the guy 1. featured in PBS: Carrier - Landing on a Pitching Deck, commanding officer of Strike Fighter Squadron 41 “The Black Aces”. He showed the amazing midnight really bad weather 'last pilot in' trap. 2. leading pilot in released 2004 USS Nimitz 'Tic Tac' UFO encounter retired from the U.S. Navy in 2006 with rank of Commander this is an almost 4hr Youtube conversation about anything and everything
  17. manual: "Multiple outputs on a single button TEMPO Command" (this is actually a 'hold longer than')
  18. Boeing Australia has announced plans to manufacture a drone with artificial intelligence that can act as a "loyal wingman" for fourth and fifth generation aircraft. On Wednseday, Defence Minister Christopher Pyne unveiled the Boeing Airpower Teaming System (ATS), an Australian-designed unmanned platform that flies alongside high-value assets such as the Lockheed Martin F-35 Lightning II, McDonnell Douglas F/A-18 Hornet, Boeing P-8 Poseidon, and Boeing E-7 Wedgetail. Designed by Boeing Phantom Works in Brisbane, the largest Boeing development center outside the US, the ATS will be the first combat aircraft designed and manufactured in Australia since the Jindivik drone of the 1950s. The drone was developed in connection with the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) and the Defence Science & Technology (DST) Group. Boeing further partnered with other defense firms such as BAE Systems Australia, Ferra Engineering, RUAG Australia, Micro Electronic Technologies, AME Systems, and Allied Data System, for the ATS development program. “The partnership will produce a concept demonstrator of a low cost unmanned ‘Loyal Wingman’ aircraft, capable of operating in concert with Air Force’s fifth generation air combat capability,” Minister Pyne said in a statement. “There is significant value investing in innovative, future leaning initiatives like this, particularly in the early conceptual stages where Defence can explore concepts and define the role such capabilities can play in our national security framework.” The first version of the ATS will employ electronic warfare sensors. Boeing said future versions of the drone would incorporate various types of advanced weaponry. The drone's artificial intelligence will allow it to fly independently or support manned aircraft while maintaining a safe distance between other aircraft, Boeing said. The 38-foot-long, jet-powered drone, with a range of 2,000 miles, will be able to conduct electronic warfare, intelligence, reconnaissance, and surveillance missions. “The Boeing Airpower Teaming System will provide a disruptive advantage for allied forces’ manned/unmanned missions,” vice president and general manager of Boeing Autonomous Systems, Kristin Robertson said. “With its ability to reconfigure quickly and perform different types of missions in tandem with other aircraft, our newest addition to Boeing’s portfolio will truly be a force multiplier as it protects and projects air power.” Boeing said it would manufacture the drone in Australia, with the future intent to exporting to allied countries once series production begins.
  19. Not true commented some about future of drone swarm guided by Hornet pilots
  20. I'd guess you're in a setup that is too heavy for slow speed, I guess you're stalling. Maybe. Check outside or in the stores page that you do not have weapons on the rails and or are carrying - full - tanks. Jettison all these with the big yellow 'push to jett' knob on your front left, Chk if all that is gone. (Or start with the instant mission 'free flight') Do a couple of touch and go's on high(er) speeds (220 kts) and only Half (Auto) (!) flaps. Keep doing these, circling the runway again and again, initially never slower than 220 kts and then slowing this down toward 170 kts, and experience what happens, this should be easy. Slow 'on speed' full flaps landing when heavy are just harder. Only finally you need to do a cattier simulation landing 'on speed' 'full flaps' and be slow and know how heavy you are. You also can check your handling of the jet by just going 'on speed' slow and level up in the air full flaps and gear down and slowing down as slow as possible and figure out what happens when a stall occurs, and what happens when you bank a turn, at what speeds and what weight. The FA18C in banking gets into a wing stall remarkably fast so you throttle up in a bank when you're in the bottom end of the speed envelope. You can fly numbers when you know what these numbers actually mean.
  21. You're not in the Cat, unless you're illiterate, this is doing a Admiral Kuznetsov to be back in the air in a jiffy for training. How's your eye sight, boys.
  22. 'Request Take-off' is in the COM menu under Deck Crew, btw, it 'seems' a bit borked when in a mission with incoming planes. Crew will pause when someone or AI is nearing the groove, even if you're hooked on the Cat and boat seems clear, in particular but not exclusively 3 & 4, sometimes its better to go off the hook to another Cat.
  23. Sometimes when I practiced quick and dirty for figuring out something, after trap, hook up, I turn my nose to bow, first flaps up and then Full, so to reset FCS, reset FCS anyway, push takeoff trim, if heavy trim 16 (don't really need that), feet on brakes, full throttle, keep on brakes when you start rolling slow until full afterburner, let go of brakes and you're off for a quickie.
  24. If everything fails, after you tried deleting your saved games configuration folder, and you're ready to smash your PC through the window, you start over deleting the installation folder and download the DCS installer DCS_World_OpenBeta_web.exe from DCS www
