Uhm, actually 3dfx had a proprietary API called Glide. Often a Voodoo card was paired with a Matrox card because Matrox had really good 2D performance. 3dfx died because it couldn't compete with Nvidia with Directx and was bought out by Nvidia. Later Matrox supported DirectX, but couldn't compete with Nvidia and Ati.
Matrox still exists and specializes in commercial multiple displays like video walls.
