Coming from a Quest 2 link cable, I find the cable on the Reverb G2 horribly stiff and inflexible. If it's not catching on the back of my seat I can feel it constantly tugging on the back of my head. Not only does this concern me about the longevity of the cable but it also moves the headset around causing the loss of the sweet spot and making everything blurry. Even if I sit on a cushion and elevate my seating position so that my head is above the back rest it doesn't help much. I'm using an IKEA POANG chair for reference, which is pretty reclined compared to a typical office or gaming chair. Does anyone else experience a similar issue or come up with a good solution? (Hanging the cable from a hook in the ceiling is one idea but not really practical in the living room!

AMD 6900xt tuning and settings for VR in dcs. My optimal recipe.
AlpineGTA replied to TED's topic in Virtual Reality
Useful information, thanks. I'm running a 6900XT and tried Radeon chill but couldn't get it to run smoothly. I don't like motion smoothing so I just run mine unlocked and turn DCS settings down until it runs smoothly. My usual test is the Harrier free flight on the Nevada map. If I can fly low level along the Vegas strip between the buildings (or any map that involves flying low over or between buildings) without any stutter or ghosting (that usually means shadows off and terrain textures low), then I'm pretty good to run anywhere, including multi-player. I'll try again with your Radeon settings and see how it runs. -
I'm using the standard Quest link cable and I play DCS fine with 2.7Gbps. I use a USB C to A adapter plugged into a powered USB hub.
-
And your Quest 2 is definitely connected to the PC via either AirLink or the cable? Make sure it's connected first before starting DCS. And are you starting DCS with VR mode enabled in the settings?

OpenXR Guide - Deprecated - This time for real (▀̿Ĺ̯▀̿ ̿)
AlpineGTA replied to nikoel's topic in Virtual Reality
I had V1 of the G2 last year and returned it after numerous issues, but I've just ordered a new one. I thought I'd give version 2 with the new cable a try after seeing it on sale for Labor Day. I still have the HP software, Windows Mixed Reality Portal and Steam VR for WMR installed from my first headset. Do I need to uninstall all of that before carrying out the steps on page one to install OpenXR, or can I leave it installed? Do I need to plug in the G2 and set it up before installing OpenXR or should I install OpenXR before plugging in the G2? The guide doesn't make it clear whether you install OpenXR before or after installing the headset, or whether it even matters. Thanks. -
My VR Setup/Config & Looking For Opinions/Suggestions
AlpineGTA replied to JSF_Aggie's topic in Virtual Reality
I would start by turning Textures to Medium and Terrain Textures to low. You don't notice much difference from the air and these settings seem to have a large impact on fps. -
I've just upgraded from an AMD 5700XT (Sapphire Pulse) to a 6900XT (XFX Merc) and it almost looks and feels like a different game! Using the same settings as for my 5700XT I can fly with my FPS locked at 72, even flying low over cities and no ghosting (I haven't tested this extensively with different maps and modules yet), everything feels nice and smooth. However... I would say for anyone contemplating a similar upgrade, don't expect miracles. If I start turning all the settings up for extra eye candy, the fps drop, stuttering and ghosting returns. High textures and shadows seem to be the two most impactful settings. If you don't want to feel disappointed, you have to manage expectations. Even with a high end card, If you want smooth performance, especially in multiplayer, turn shadows and textures down. But if you want to just enjoy a single player free flight, then yes, you can turn a few settings up and enjoy the scenery. It's probably just down to the more capable, newer GPU, but with high textures and shadows enabled the cockpit feels more immersive and much richer in colour, lighting and texture. I'm very happy with the upgrade.

Gaming Chair - Recommendations?
AlpineGTA replied to dburne's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
Yep, that's what I use, with some custom arm mounts for my throttle and joystick. Very comfortable for a low slung VR position in front of the TV. Or, for a more conventional upright position set at a desk, the IKEA MARKUS office chair is very comfortable and much better than a gaming chair. -
Upgraded from a rx 480 to 5700xt ...splat
AlpineGTA replied to FlyingTaco21's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
I have a 5700XT but I'm not at home at the moment to check all my settings. I do know that I have the automatic under-volting selected in the Radeon software though. I find that most reliable, rather than trying to manually tweak the voltage graph myself. -
Will there be a difference in performance between using 4 x 16GB sticks vs 2 x 32Gb sticks? I already have 32GB (2 x 16GB) and I'm thinking of upgrading to 64GB, but how to do it? It's more cost effective to buy two more of the same 16GB sticks that I'm already using, than to buy two new 32GB sticks and discard 2 perfectly good 16GB sticks. Even if using 2 channels of 32GB does perform better than using 4 channels of 16GB, I assume 64GB (4 x 16) overall will still be better than 32 GB of x2 16?

Recording video but from VR picture
AlpineGTA replied to YoYo's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
Do you need to record live? Even if you've played in VR you can play the tracks back in 2D. Can you use OBS to record whilst you're playing a track file? If you want to see the VR head movements from the pilot's perspective the track file will show that, as long as you leave it alone to play and don't switch to any other views, such as F2 etc. As soon as you do that you lose the VR pilot's view. -
I've seen a wale swimming around the harbour at Ushuaia. I haven't spotted any other animals yet.

South Atlantic Map early access release note
AlpineGTA replied to myHelljumper's topic in South Atlantic
I honestly think it's really not bad at all. It's pretty good! I didn't expect it to look as detailed the photograph but it's quite accurate. -
South Atlantic Map early access release note
AlpineGTA replied to myHelljumper's topic in South Atlantic
Great photo! Do you know where the exact spot is on the map? Maybe go there in DCS in a chopper, land and compare the view, just for fun! It would be interesting to see. -
Yes, it must be a problem with the map, I've experienced flickering too with a Quest 2.
-
That's a strange one. I wonder if maybe it's your PC power supply? Maybe the Quest 2 is drawing more power than it can supply? Have you tried tracing which fan is spooling up? Can't really think of anything else, sorry. Other than make sure all your software is up to date - graphics card drivers etc.

This video might help: https://youtu.be/lWfavwNk9Hs
-
Yes and it's even more pronounced in the Harrier shots. I'd like to see it with the Depth of Field option off.
-
The opening shots look great but then when you see it with the aircraft in shot, there seems to be some sort of disconnect, like the aircraft and terrain are not part of the same environment. It almost looks as if the aircraft is a model suspended in front of a blue screen or something. It's especially noticeable on the Harrier shots towards the end. Whether it's something to do with the fact that they're using (albeit heavily modified) satellite images - maybe the resolution is not high enough, or it's just the DCS settings that are being applied, such as blur and depth of field, I don't know. If that's the case then I'd like to see some video without those settings applied. And some interaction with the environment, such as dropping bombs etc. I've just watched some DCS cinematic videos on youtube and I don't notice the the same feeling of disconnect on other maps that I see in this video. Although, I'm aware those cinematic videos might have other effects applied to make them blend more realistically. Hopefully it's just a quirk of this video, as otherwise it does look like it could be a great map.

Yes, good point, I agree, I had the same thought, but I was also just curious if anyone knew or had experience of the difference in performance of the two AMD cards. If it's noticeably greater, then the flipside is maybe I don't need to wait for an even higher spec card. It could still be worth waiting for the (hopefully) even lower prices though.
-
Thanks, I know it might be a bit against the grain, but I'd rather stick with AMD. I think they offer better value. 3070s's are around $750/$800 range at the moment vs around $550 for a 6700XT. I'm using a Quest 2, for reference.

I'm currently using a Sapphire 5700XT Pulse, which I think is an excellent card and I'm thinking of upgrading to a Sapphire 6700XT (Pulse or Nitro). Firstly, I just want to start by saying, I'm aware that just getting the best of everything you can - CPU, GPU, RAM etc. is generally the best way to go as far as getting the best VR performance is concerned. However, for the time being I'm just debating upgrading my graphics card and even though prices have come down a lot, I don't want to spend a grand or more on a 6800XT or 6900XT etc. So, I'm thinking of upgrading just a step up, from a 5700XT to a 6700XT, specifically a Sapphire Pulse or Nitro and I'm wondering, is there anyone else who has made this specific upgrade from a 5700Xt to a 6700XT and was there any noticeable improvement in VR performance? If not, I'll probably just stick with my 5700XT and wait until (maybe) the higher end cards come down in price even further. According to online GPU reviews there is a noticeably useful jump in FPS performance from a 5700XT to 6700XT, at least for 2D games, but I wonder if the same is true for VR performance. I really wish review sites would also include some VR games in their benchmark tests. I know they're unlikely to review anything as niche as DCS but some kind of indication would be useful.

Useful information to know. Thanks.

Yes, I agree with your points. There's a gap in the market for a TWCS HOTAS type dual horizontal throttle with some buttons, but I agree with you, unfortunately I don't think Thrustmaster will ever make it. The TWCS sells so well anyway I suppose it makes no business sense for them to spend the time and money re-engineering it only to sell it at a similar price.

It has it's flaws but I really like my T16000M throttle. I'm not a fan of the arching movement of the more expensive throttles, such as the Warthog, Virpil, WinWing etc, I prefer the sliding action of the T16000M, it keeps all the hats and switches in the same place, or on the same plane/level. For me, that's more comfortable and it makes it easier to feel where everything is in VR. In it's price range, I think it's probably the best throttle out there. The only problem is, I wish the throttles were split and it had some switches and buttons on the base like the more expensive ones. I think Thrustmaster are missing a trick by not making a modified version that includes these features. They've recently launched General Aviation replica Airbus and Boeing throttles that have these features, at a similar price, so I'm sure it's within their capability to make an upgraded T16000M within the same price range. It would probably be the best mid-range throttle on the market. I know I'd snap one up. Anyone else had similar thoughts?
