  1. Lol impatient one. Most are playing A-10C. I can't remember the first mission but I've done the first 3rd of the big campaign, halfway through the middle part now. For GOW, the sea is a bad idea due to air activity and SAMs that are often in GOW. Generally you're better off if you have somewhere to hide. The means mountains. Waypoints are a guide only, and following the mission waypoints exactly will get you killed. I fly a wide circuit as needed to stay with cover. Sneaking around and flanking with mountains is good but scan everything and watch out for ZSU he doesn't like you very much and his guns are accurate. Also don't bother taking rockets, they will get you killed. Just 12 Vikhrs + accurate Shkval cannon, then maybe a land and reload. This will keep your engagement range at 3km+ outside of danger range. Rockets are for anti-terrorist hunts where the terrorists have only AKs. Realistic situations that are not challenging enough to bother putting in a computer game though. Also not much infantry in DCS, so forget rockets.
  2. Thankyou ED. I tried multi-monitor again just to see if it improved lately. It's excellent! I don't know what you have done to improve it though? Multi-monitor in A-10C is 3x as great as blackshark now. Very much improved. I get 60 frames per second in A-10C with 2560x2680 resolution (MFDs below). Ka-50 only gave 22 FPS with the same setup, and still does only give 22 FPS (but 60 FPS in 2560x1600 single port full screen mode) Maybe you optimised window mode? Or optimised the graphics in general? Whatever it was it performs wonderfully. I hope when DCS blackshark gets the new engine that multi-monitor in blackshark will also run with this performance level. Does anyone else experience the same thing? Better performance in multi-monitor A-10C compared to the shark?
  3. Thanks
  4. Longer stick will be better for prop sims too, even if you cant hit full deflection as fast, that's a defensive move anyway. The important thing is the increased precision which = better gunnery aim. This will more than offset any issue with reaction time from center to full extent. Plus the ability to fly without using any curves is excellent. I've got my extension ready to build now, not sure if I will go for the spring though I'll have to see how much tension is lost. I'm actually looking forward to less tension though, long sessions with the warthog has my arm a little sore due to the prop sims I fly that need forward stick for level flight.
  5. It's hard to boom n zoom more than one at a time, generally you have to stay higher than the highest one, and as you attack one the other one gains height so you keep swapping to whoever is highest. If you want to avoid extending too far away and avoid headons, there's various vertical techniques you can use, they are mostly in Requiem's videos linked above. For an idea of what it looks like in combat to use the "high yoyo" here's an old video of me in Dolphin: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BB5ij673kTE It can work somewhat with the Spad, note in the video towards the end I got impatient and used the Dolphins excellent high speed turn. The Spad doesn't turn as well but the Spad is faster and can zoom higher. Other videos to checkout from Requiem's are the pitch back (after the headon, pull back and the from the top of the loop roll onto their 6 for a shot), and the "rope-a-dope". In the Spad the rope-a-dope is very good against Albatros. Keep bit of rudder in the climbing spiral you don't need hardly any aileron at all once you've got the bank angle right it's just a little bit of rudder. Also - the barrel roll attack is good to lineup someone below you if they are turning tight, you roll into their turn as you cant turn with them for long.
  6. Yeah that's what I meant ;) It's been so long since I did that mission. They fly all planes including energy fighters. Yeah they just mastered the view system is all. Takes some practice and tweaking of settings. One of my squad flys the Spad most of the time, and he only uses the mouse to look around. He does very well. Although he flies bombers alot and his practice of left-hand mouse gives him an advantage - he can fly the bomber with the right hand and shoot from the gunner position with the mouse in the left! Needless to say I don't attack at him if he's flying a bomber. Interesting though having NO trackir does give you an advantage in fighter gunnery. Moving a stable screen crosshair onto a maneuvering target is easier than moving a crosshair with changing position due to head movement. Even if you put a deadzone on x and y, the yaw/pitch of trackir will still require mental subconscious adjustments to your aim. Just saying this so that people don't blame trackir for anything. Go into multiplayer and expect to die with or without trackir ;) The sim has a large learning curve but that's the fun of it. Having said this, I love trackir and highly recommend it for this and any other sims. Much more immersive, and keeps my HOTAS hands free is more relaxing than juggling view controls.
  7. for the situational awareness without trackir, you need your left hand either on the mouse, on the numpad, or on a hatswitch on your throttle. Set your viewer to pan mode in the launcher, and adjust the speeds to your liking. You need it to stay panned and not pop back to cockpit. Then keep a button handy to go back to cockpit. E.g. in a turn fight, you only need pan up a little and then he's in your view through the whole turn, then when guns on him tap the cockpit centre view button. Trackir is good, but you don't have to have it. In fact the top 5 multiplayer dogfighters don't use it, they use the keypad or throttle hat in the left hand. I say left hand, because you don't want to be touching anything else on your stick when you're shooting as it throws off your aim :)
  8. Yep the SPAD is a boom n zoom plane. To stay in the fight and attack from above can be done, but it takes many many hours of practice to avoid him getting guns on from below. So to start with, fly the SPAD in hit and run tactics. Before you attack the two fokkers, start climbing at 140 speed. Do not come within guns range until you are at least 1000 feet above them. Fly above them, wingover or loop over and dive on them shooting. If you have enough energy left, climbing turn back up and dive and shoot again. To build up some energy after each shot, you can do a spiral climb. Make sure you spiral climb towards them so that you're too vertical for them to shoot you. When you run out of energy, speed away with slight nose down to get out of bullet range and start the climb and do it again. I love the SPAD to death, but to be honest it's one of the hardest flying styles to master unless you've played alot of Boom n Zoom tactics in IL-2 or something. Once mastered though, it's one of the top 3 planes in historical missions in my opinion. You can escape and survive almost anything. The ultimate chickenshit running machine :)
  9. There's a community teamspeak for it, many of the squads and random players can join. People often jump on when playing multiplayer: ts3.riseofflight.com:7777 Also checkout Requiem's videos: http://www.youtube.com/user/Requiem10NS
  10. Not much really. Just things like manually switching to gravity or reserve fuel tank, changing ammunition drums, major gun jams (stoppages are modelled). These things are handled automatically, instead of having an interface for them. It's pretty much got it all where it counts though. Yeah I agree I feel more "in the aircraft" in ROF too, it's unreal. Have been trying HDR High, with high detail landscape etc lately since my graphics card upgrade. It's amazing now with the long view distance, looks awesome.
  11. And the game is now free:clap: Free starter version all features for two planes: http://www.riseofflight.com/tryrof Kind of hard to believe they did this, but smart decision I think. Once people like it they will buy more planes I reckon.
  12. One of the big things I'm loving is the new view distance. You no longer have to zoom to spot planes or buildings, they render at full range now. Zoom is only needed if you want to see more detail.
  13. True in some ways indeed, such as "game" play. It has the fun factory that's for sure, plus the career mode, and competitive player vs player combat. Fighting against other humans is very challenging and satisfying. Also sometimes after a hard days work it's nice to just jump in and fly around with minimal controls. DCS exceeds it in modelling of systems. ROF doesn't allow control of all the cockpit controls, although in these old planes there's not many controls anyway so the HOTAS suffices. In terms of flight model, I'd say they are about equal. Although DCS does have the advantage of having real flight data to model from, whereas WW1 there is no solid data for all these old planes. Actually I heard one or two of the old developers from flaming cliffs worked on some of the ROF flight models. So they should be on par with at least Su-25t. Anyone looking at grabbing it, you won't regret it! It's free anyway. Also - HOTAS warthog is great with it, although you may need to move the Y axis for some of the planes that are rigged with not much forward stick (causes the nose to rise). To get around this - try these curves: http://www.oceanicwing.com/Forum/Main/index.php?topic=426.0 G940 or any force feedback stick doesnt need curves, as the force feedback moves to the correct stick position as the real planes would.
  14. Because ideally the logbook should only show kills from actual real missions. The other way to do it is to create a practice pilot, then you can still watch things blow up without putting fake kills in the logbook :)
  15. I have it, it's great. Although I struggle to find time for several sims and Combat Mission. However Combat Mission makes a nice laptop game when I have to travel for work, as it's not TOO graphics hungry.
  16. Black shark is more relaxing because you can take your time and crawl along or hover. The systems don't have to be used in a rush. I'm sure with more hours A-10 will become second nature but there just something soothing about creeping around in the shark.
  17. Thanks Derelor, These SOPs are awesome. I only fly casually as I multi-sim.. so not having to check the manual every time I come back to this sim is fantastic. I can now use all the weapons every flight without having to review! I've taken some things from WarriorX's pages and all of yours to provide me the ultimate reference. Cheers
  18. Ahh I see. Will the 3d client work over remote desktop or should I not bother?
  19. Concise is best, thanks. I'll try the new patch with current version of checklist. Cheers
  20. I didn't see it in this changelog. Does anyone know when it's coming or is it not until next patch?
  21. +1 Love the new sound with my logitech surround headphones. I like the new cannon sounds too I sat there just firing all my ammo :)
  22. Hi, Are you doing a new checklist for 1108? Thanks!
  23. Keep us updated on the NZ action, I'll subscribe to this thread. We mostly fly Rise of Flight, but some of our Aussie and Kiwi members are getting A-10C but they're waiting for the compatibility patch to come out. Mainly because some of us only have FC2 or Black Shark and not all the titles. I have A-10C but I haven't done multiplayer yet. Will come online more after the titles get linked up again.
  24. We host a dedicated box for Rise of Flight, with Hypernia. It's $160 per month, and we get quad core cpu, 100mbit bandwidth etc. However, we split the bill between guys in the squad and donations. It's not a cheap undertaking so it's best to band together with some friends who want to host the same sort of missions and form a squad.
