Back in December I upgraded to 8.1, not expecting much difference from 8. Wrong. It took a turn for the worse, actually. Let me list some problems here.

d3d9.dll (enb mods for example) is seemingly "blocked" and ENB no longer works

My MIDI software keeps getting unregistered by the computer and I have to manually uninstall it

RadeonPro doesn't work for 8.1, however, I think I've heard of a newer version that had its name changed.

Don't know what Microsoft was thinking of when releasing this. I'm going to see what happens when I completely disable UAC. I'll edit when I see the results.

UAC did nothing for rFactor, but I think RadeonPro just wasn't running with UAC enabled or running w/o admin.

MIDI software will take some time.

Was it a new install or updated?

The only way to make sense out of change is to plunge into it, move with it, and join the dance.

really strange. I've got 8.1 pro installed, and a ton of stuff on the rig (hardware & software), and no issues.

my O/S install was a fresh build, and not an upgrade.

No issues here either. Three different machines.

I also would not call any of those things that you listed a failure on Microsoft's part.

Hibernation is not working for me on 8.1 Upgraded not from 8 disc. I'm mainly using Arch thankfuly, I am keeping Windows because of DCS and some other games. When vcredist 2012 gets implemented in Wine then I might not be back.

Edit.

Major show stopper: Starforce.

Yea the more ive used 8.1 the more issues im running into.

Pretty much every game i have installed should support the Xbox 360 controller but since going from Win 7 to 8.1 about 1/2 of them dont work with the controller anymore.

Im also running into an issue with some installers or background services that make the pc grind to a halt while thrashing the hard drive. Even making the mouse and desktop hang for minutes at a time before bursting back into life, ive sen this happen a few times on this machine and on my gf new laptop that came with 8.1.

Ive pretty much returned to using Win 7 in dual boot for most games and serious apps as 8.1 seems a bit 'rigged and rough around the edges. Just waiting for free weekend so can get this 8.1 turd off the system altogether.

I also dont like the fact that a load of services like the Metro Store service, Windows Defender or other major services cant be controlled by any acct on the computer now and theres no way to disable them even using reg hacks.

You cannot disable UAC in 8.1

The closest thing to it is the silenced-mode. It's still active, though.

I had some troubles myself and I hate that power-safeing BS that disables my Cougar MFDs, because there is no input coming from them and what sends no input is switched off.

Nice thinking.

At least there should be an option to disable it other than hacking your registry.

Anyway, most problem are negated by activation the option to run the program as admin. That solved 9 of 10 issues for me.

Ive been using this since i installed 8.1 and its made the whole system more responsive. Gone is the micro delay for things to respond to clicks that appeared after every Os after Xp and i dont run into issues of installers failing due to UAC trying to virtualize important registry keys.

You dont need UAC at all if you have a decent antivirus/IDS and all it does is bloat/lag the Os trying to virtualize everything which is pointless since 99% of malware bypasses uac anyways.

I dont trust any MS supposed security improvements at a cost of a much more bloated Os when things like this:http://www.theregister.co.uk/2014/03/11/microsoft_adobe_patch_tuesday/

https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/security/bulletin/ms14-013

Can still ruin pc's all the way from Xp to 8.1 with just a picture file...

Don't have much of a problem here either except for a few minor issues that are mostly visual like the UAC overlay on some icons (not all) although i am the only admin and the only user. There's a workaround to get rid of these overlays so no big deal.

The only thing that i can't get to work for now is my Logitech MK520 keyboard/mouse combo and Win8.1 sleep mode.

When one or both has the option ticked that they can wake the computer they will do so on an irregular interval without me touching either mouse or keyboard.

I have always, in every version since the '90s, disabled every sleep, hibernate or 'energy efficient' function in Windows. It eliminates a lot of weird behavior.

Didn't use any sleep function before Windows 8 either (and no powersavings, just like now) but i did like the sleep mode in Windows 8. Tap op the keyboard and 2 secs later you where good to go. But it does not work under Win8.1 (at least not with the Logitech MK520).

No solution from Logitech and non from M$ either, the only one they have is saying... do not use it... LOL.

Doesn't work, then there is still the keyboard. If one of them is active, the computer comes out of sleep randomly.

I could use the both the power buttons and set them to off everytime but then i could as good do what i do now, make the mouse and keyboard not wake up the computer and use the case powerbutton instead to wake it.

The one thing i do like on 8.1 is Hibernate. Gets from power button press to login screen in about 5 seconds on a 7200rpm hard drive.

I was also having issues with my Logitech mouse restarting computer 2 minutes after turning off. All i did was disable keyboard from waking pc in System Properties and just turning off mouse quickly before Windows turned off.

Pc turns back on now when turning the mouse back on.

Try to run in compatible mode and they said this program is not compatible . So I reinstall the windows 8 back again and all work normal again .I know there is a lot of download to-do but solve the problem.

About my problems with hibernation and sleep mode.

It turned out to be update from 8 to 8.1. After clean install of 8.1 it's working flawlessly, and since I had this problem not only on my PC then it means that upgrade process has major issues.

I have upgraded all six of my machines from Windows 8.0 to Windows 8.1. Not a problem to be found. All went perfectly smoothly. It turns out that this Operating System is also working just fine in multiple domain environments which I mange as well.

Most of the perceived problems with this OS can be explained by people's natural resistance to change combined with not understanding that you can easily set up Windows 8/8.1. to look feel and function much the same as it's predecessor Windows 7. Boot directly to the desktop, use a start menu etc.

I have found that 99% of the complaints about this OS overblown and unfounded. It is a very reliable and feature rich Operating system which has clearly improved upon Windows 7 in many areas. Heard much the same noise when people were first transitioning from XP to Windows 7 as well.

"Keep your hands of my Windows XP" they cried! Look at us now eh?

Here we go again.........:megalol:
