Gimme hope :)

So, I just installed a clean DCS World installation. My USER\Saved Games\DCS is empty, but the .\config\autoexec.cfg with my render3D=false. No successful launch. I'll try with VNC, and tell you.

In C:\Users\<user>\Saved Games\DCS\Config\autoexec.cfg I have:

options.graphics.render3D = false

Do you have it exactly the same? No just "render3D=false", but with full variable path!

BTW, for remote connection I personally use TightVNC with DemoForge Mirage Driver...

Exactly like that... make sure the autoexec is an actual cfg file.

Being in the autoexec will prevent it from being repaired every time that you load a new version or run a repair.

I run it through teamviewer 9 and it is easy as it can be...

Wierd - I didn't even get that far, I was having the same problem as the op. There were some settings in the "RDP-tcp" dialogue that looked promising, but never worked for me.

I (incorrectly it would seem) assumed that 3D stuff wouldn't work over an RDP connection full stop. The OS is Win 2k8. Interesting to see the differences in setups!:D

As far as I know, remotefx only works with virtualised windows 7 running under Server 2012, although I think win 8.1 enterprise might work as well now.

Well, back from the battle.....:)

I reinstalled the OS (win server 2008 R1SP2), applied WinUpdates, installed motherboard and i5 drivers: Intel 4600 detected, dxdiag ouput is Direct3D enabled, but neither DirectDraw nor AGP texture. DCS still crashing through both RDP ans UltraVNC.

I decided to use TightVNC.... no other change... good !!!! I can launch DCS !!! Yeehaaa !!:v:

I still have to validate that autoIT script is working fine from a TightVNC-detached session, and I would become more optimistic.... :P

To understand, I am quite sure that Win server 2012 through RDP is OK (I read on msdn that they rewrote remoteFX and enlarge RDP abilities), but 2008 may need TightVNC with no remoteFX (that requires hyper-v features).

So, for guys who said that RDP let them launch DCS, could you confirm that it was with 2012 server and not 2008 and not inside VM under hyper-v server ?

Anyway, I think that I will try to build up some Virtualbox vdi with DCS powered by win7. I will do my setup.... then convert the .vdi to .vhd and run it on server.

Glad you made it :thumbup: I also use TightVNC

To get the AutoIT scripts to work for restarting server you need the same resolution on the server as on the VNC session. Anything different will not do.

@HiJack: why ?

Is the only issue the difference of screen coordinates to emulate mouse clicks at the right location ? Because you can use softwares to get true screen locations and modify your script to work on another display.... Unless you think about another limitation.

None of the 2008 or 2012 will work via RDP. The correct solution is as described earlier by doveman:

RemoteFX is working as a service on newest windows servers and needs some special preparations and roles to be installed. Is not just point and click. However, this service will allow virtualized machines to use directly some accelerated hardware.

To be honest, is not worth anymore to have such complex solutions.... let's wait a bit for EDGE. Hopefully it will have that long promised dedicated server.

Actually you can't run DCS without a directx capable display adapter.

It does not mean that you need a dedicated GPU, but you need at least a software emulated adapter, VMWare and other virtualization software provide this feature, but you need access to the host configuration.

Kicking around the idea of repurposing my old Dell workstation as a DCS server... Just to be clear, it does help to have a gpu even of 3d rendering is turned off, right?

I have a choice of slapping an r9 290 in there, a pair of 290x's, an RX 470 or I might buy an old Quadro if there would be an advantage of using Nvidia and 2gb of vram would be enough .. kinda leaning toward the 290, wouldn't be my first choice for rendering but that sucker will compute... Thoughts? Am I on the right track?

So that'll be prob e5-2653, 16Gb, win7, 120Gb SSD, and whatever GPU I slap in there
