Most Realistic Online Combat Flight Sim?

Recommended Posts

Posted

I used to play Air Warrior back in the day - it was incredibly fun. I swear I played that game probably 10 hours straight at times.

I'm looking for something like that to play online again. I noticed there are a few options out there to choose from including War Thunder, Aces High II, Wings of Prey, Warbirds, etc...

Any recommendations here?

War Thunder looks hella unrealistic to me but graphically quite nice.

I'm looking for the most realistic option here but one that also has enough players at all times of the day.

I'm sure once DCS Europe comes out - there will be tons of players on there but until then - any recommendations would be awesome!

IL-2: Cliffs of Dover might be your best bet. War Thunder is free to play, so you might check to see if the "realistic" action is for you. Who cares... do what is more fun!

DoW and BS are both excellent for relatively quick PvP style engagements with full realism, there is nothing else more real, but yes I agree it's usually 2v2 and that's a shame, i've been looking for the same but populated and ideally in the UK for a v long time. I'm waiting for some other developments in DCS, i hope by the end of the year I could get a dedicated server going from home and fill this missing joy!

Try Rise of Flight - not as popular as War Thunder, but much more realistic, there are usually enough players on "Aces Falling" P2P server, there are also nice coop servers as well.

Besides very soon there would be release of IL-2 Battle of Stalingrad. Current beta is usually full of people all the time, and it is fairly realistic sim.

For variety and general combat I prefer Il-2 1946. No click pits, no advanced flight model, but it has all areas of combat and carrier ops. With modded maps in my opinion the scenery is every bit as good (if not better) than Clod or Bos/Rof.

CloD with TF has FPS problem online, at least for me and a couple of other people. As for IL-2 1946, for someone coming from Air Warrior and such, this should be the best option - FMs are ok, not up to today's standards, but better than Aces High 2. Same goes for gunnery and CEM. People still play this online, so there should be no problem finding folks to fly with.

IL-2 Battle of Stalingrad has not as many players as 1946, but much nicer graphically and no need to spend hours getting mods set up. BOS has very good damage model, sounds, and flight model if that is what you are looking for.

Thanks for the help.

I actually already have Il-2 1946 but I've never been successful in getting it to run on Windows 8.1 I'll try it again.

I got on DCS multiplayer and found it pretty fun. However there aren't a lot of players on there. The dogs of war server was actually empty.

I guess my dream would be the amount of people who used to be in Air Warrior but on DCS multiplayer.

It would be pretty sweet to have a DCS arena filled with 100+ World War 2 birds.

I've looked into this but isn't it only World War 1 aircraft? Not that it wouldn't be fun if it were.

I think I was gonna buy Rise of Flight at one point but the prices looked excessive to me.

Il-2 Stalingrad is probably next on my purchase list - especially if the multiplayer fills up.

IL2 BoS is a blast. I bought in to it a while ago but just messed around for a little bit and didn't care for the flight model. But I just gave it another go over the week end and had a great time. The flight model has been improved. The immersion with the ground units and the damage model make it so much fun to play. Coming in for a straffing run on ground targets and accidentally clipping a tree and seeing the trail in the snow where my plane slid across the ground!

Actually you guys are right - IL-2 BOS looks quite nice.

How much action is there multiplayer? Lots of people on or not yet?

If you were to choose - which would you pick between IL-2 and Rise of flight? Kinda twisted on the purchase and buying both would be pointless do to available time to play them.

MP= is still being vetted, on their test servers. average amount to players is 33/33 on 6 servers

when it gets released officially, it will be on DS and will have more verities.

I know this isn't the best place to discus this, but anyone wanting invest in BOS might want to hold their horses. The FMs, Graphics and ground handling is awesome, but at the same time the devs seem to be rushing things and are acting like they want to get this out the door and that is it. These at least are some concerns that're floating around - but hey, what else do you expect when you post that the campaign is almost ready and you have spent the whole week working on it?

Anyway, again I am not trying to start a discussion about this or that sim or discourage anyone from anything, but just be warned, that BOS might come out stillborn - meaning not much development after release. Considering the price, you might want to wait and see how the situation develops. Whatever is said, at least go around their forum and spend some time reading the dev updates and user's comments to make up your own mind before purchase.

I can fully agree with this. If I could get a refund I would. Its fine for what it is, but in all honesty, I dont see it making it long term. I wont go into the all the issues, but I think a fair warning is justified.

Check out the DoW server in the daytime (usually around lunch for you). I've noticed much more action at those times (I'm guessing the European community) than in the evenings. Also the weekends seem to pick up quite a bit sometimes hitting full servers. If your just wanting constant action you may want to check out something free and simple like War Thunder to keep you busy.

In my mind:

DCS : best accurate FM and full real clickable cockpit. but worst DM effects and not full server abbilities and no WWII object map and immersion, no bombers to shout down. A study Sim.

the one I play most at this time, but waiting for Edge 2, a WWII Map, and full server with +100 wwii warbirds ....

IL2 CLIFF OF DOVER + Team Fusion patch : Best Eyecandy photoreal cockpit and best DM engine. ( no predictable or never the same issue, detailleds effects on fuel tanks, on flaps, rudders etc ... )

nice immersion and Full server abbilities up to 120 players on real size Channel Map ... with no lag for me and 60 fps...

FM quite good in flight ( predictable aircraft when you know them) , not as good, in ground effect / landing / take off.

IL2 BOS : very sensitiv (over sensitiv ?) FM in ground landing. not Accurate FM in flight, but quite good (some needs to be upgraded). Cockpits, colours and graphics looks sometimes In my mind, "old school" or cartonish. except for Zeus user made map wich is nice. DM are not so good (the game seems to only counts the number of hit before the wing fall ...) . Multi player looks like In my mind to much arcade or WT. You must love snow white landscape ... / Unlocking system of Bonus and skins with the SP Campaign can be a problem for MP fans.

No Sim is perfect at this time. But all have some good features. So .... grab them all as I did !

I would stick to DCS. In few months from now on all that missing features will be overcame by the new modules, new maps, new engine...

DCS FM engine is the most important in my acceptance... nothing else (other simulator) came even close!

Flanker52 if you really looking for something like AirWarrior, then do not expect anything close from il21946, il2CLOD, il2BOS, ROF etc. They just provide online dedicated servers with not many ongoing campaigns/wars (you need to search deep the net to find something like). Even if younger (graphically particularly) they suffer from very poor online gameplay design as they were designed not as online sims in the first place.

Go and have a look on these examples

AcesHighII (monthly subscription) - massive online sim with ongoing dynamic war with capturing territory, supply etc. Historical scenarios taking place on regular basis

Battleground Europe (Free2Play) - massive online world war II (ETO theater) with possibility to fly (planes), drive (ground vehicles), swim (ships), run (soldiers)

Lets say also (Free2Play) - but only small arenas up to 32v32 players (or 16v16 max? not sure) and no online dynamic campaign yet.

The thing in question can be the expression 'Most Realistic'. It can be in relation to FM/DM, or in relation to Combat Environment, or in relation to something else. Everyone have his oven preferences.

I totally agree, no one sim does it all, need multiple ones for when you wanna do different things
