Was F-5E capable of deploying AGM-65?

depends on the F-5E

early factory standard was not AGM-65 capable but many nations upgraded there F-5s to be able to use it (either alone or with help from northrop)

so it very much depend what Tiger II they are modeling.

Since many of them are indeed able to carry the AGM-65 and other guided air-ground munitions but not all.

Thanks for the link to the manual. I can see that the E-1 variant is somewhat different and has perhaps a newer equipment fit (or it's some downgraded equipment set for export?).

In any case, I'm really excited by having this module as it hits the right avionics and weapons set for me - e.g. not too primitive like the F-86 and not too modern and advanced either.

Wondering How they use it. AFAIK no MFD there, maybe moving the gunsight on the HUD? Cause the E it uses a simple gunsight, right?

I don't understand anything in russian except Davai Davai!

IIRC Radar screen was modified to be able to show the maverick seeker picture

I'm inclined to think the F-5 we're getting will not be Mav capable, based purely by the fact that they emphasize unguided weapons when they talk about ground attack.

Agreed.

Happy to see this one is finally official. I'm really looking forward to some aggressor training... And some of that fictional F-14 Vs Mig-28 action. Good times ahead, just need that F-16 now.

I love how Belsimtek clearly states this is Leatherneck's Mig-21Bis nemesis. Wouldn't it be great if both studios kept releasing rivals for the other's modules?

It would be phenomenal! I think that generally this has been done by ED. For example, the counter to the F-15C is clearly Su-27. When they release the F/A-18C, I wonder what Russian aircraft would be consider it's counter? Be interesting to see.

Mi-24 is coming, maybe we'll get lucky and they'll work on an Apache A version? Who knows...let's hope.

The primary decision base is always the availability of data on the aircraft, declassified systems and weapons to go along with it and so on... Up to the point where you need a license to use the plane and systems they want to model.

The "game balance" or "worthy adversary" aspect is secondary, at best.

If there is a choice between a handful of planes to model, it might be a factor, but you can assume, nobody is "choosing" a plane what plane he WANTS to model and build in DCS. More like "what plane he CAN model". ;)

Indeed, that's one big drawback of the exquisite level of detail in these modules, no module is possible without data and licenses. However, when we get lucky and end up with a matching pair, I think most people enjoy it better. Take the Sabre and Mig-15, such duels are the best for MP.

I'm delighted about the Mig-21Bis (my favorite module so far) getting a friend to play with. The opposite is true, for example, with the upcoming Typhoon. We all know it's going to be the most lethal fighter in DCS for a long time, without anything else coming close. Great to have it, i'll fly the wings off it when it's available, but knowing the only worthy opponent it's going to get is itself makes it somewhat less enjoyable for me.

Do not underestimate the Mig-21 if flown by an experienced Pilot and using GCI plus larger numbers as intended.

Also, the SU-27/33 and the F-15C are considerable opponents, though not DCS level. But the F/A-18C in the pipeline is definitely a worthy and lethal opponent.

The thing about warfare is, it never was intended to be fair or balanced.

In fact you should only fight if you have a considerable advantage...

Yet, it is of course cool to have two opposing platforms, that historically actually fought one another, but I will also enjoy, unbalanced fights with modern age fighter jets.

SWEET! It has hips.

Also how about a T-38 variant and some NASA missions to accompany. That'd be a totally new mission experience for DCS. Not combat, but I don't really care.

I don't see how flying around an unarmed 2-seater F-5 with downgraded engines would be a new experience over the F-5E or the trainers already available. NASA does have a pretty paint job for it though, I'll give you that.

In any case, the F-5E is a perfect match for the MiG-21Bis. I'm glad BST has extended their pairing of aircraft to include LNS's MiG-21. I would have preferred the Mi-24 and AH-1 as I mostly fly choppers in DCS, but as far as fixed wing goes, the F-5E is the best possible pick for DCS at this time.

Just poppin' in to say that I would really want the BST F-5E to be equipped with AN/APQ-159-1 model which had TV screen support for AGM-65s. Then we'll have a really cool and capable multirole.

I too would prefer a model that supports early AGM-65's. I had been under the impression that maverick capability was a standard feature from day 1 on the F-5E. It appears that isn't the case but it was very common regardless. Given that BST has officially announced it though, it's probably in the final stages of development. So it is likely too late for any significant changes like that.

Day One Purchase

BST is knocking it out the park IMHO. The F-5E is a day one buy for me and after the awesome job this crew did on the Sabre, I think its safe to say this bird is gonna be an wonderful addition to the DCS hanger.
