Both would be a better option IMHO. I prefer the button solution, as I can then choose if I want to pull the 40kg or not, as in reality. Holding the stick back for an arbitrary time to activate it seems like it would be a little bit of a pain and activate when you don't want it to. Maybe have a special options tickbox for the "hold for X seconds" option so everyone is happy?

I also prefer the timed option. Something like, when stick held at full extension for 0.5 s, you get the extra control authority for 2 s, or shorter if you let go.

But, obviously, giving us the choice between that and a hotkey in the Special options menu would be the best possible solution.

ED supposedly does this with the Su-27, where the hard stops can be reached by holding down the wheelbrake button/key while inflight.

I prefer the button option and this solution would be preferable(e.g. HOTAS Autopilot Off button also works for this)

In this case no need to assign that function to another joystick button:D

Why is it your worst enemy? Because a misconfiguration can be deadly. Flying with air to ground ordnance under the wings and with the G-Limiter in A/A can put you in a situation in which you will lose the wings due to overstress. The switch is there for a reason so do not forget setting it to its correct position.

Lose the wings ? Certainly not on the 2000, on which the wings are particularily strong. The bolts of the wing pylons will fail once they reach their mechanical load limit long before the wings start to fall off.

Care with the hard stop, it can allow very high loads (12 G). Some (in the HAF) mentionned an emergency recovery at 14 G (not harmless for both the aircraft and pilot, that goes without saying). :D

Azrayen : are you certain about the 290°/s roll rate ? I thought it was 270

That is all correct and modeled as such :)

The only thing not incorporated is the 40kg pull allowing that extra emergency performance. We have not figured out a slick way of introducing it as it is something that shouldn't be part of normal flight and it's hard to simulate the effect of having to pull back 40kg (which is a hell of a lot) on a desktop joystick.

We have thought of the following possiblities: 1. An emergency button/key that while pressed and at full stick deflection will engage the extra performance. 2. When pulled back all the way for some period of time it kicks in

Would love to hear thoughts on the issue.

Beyond that, everything Azrayen mentioned is how it operates currently.

I would prefer a button as opposed to a time delay. I don't think it's a good idea to have the result of your input change without making any changes to your actual input. By that I mean, I don't want to be at the maximum normal performance and then get forced into "emergency performance." Sure, I could relax the stick for a moment, but that problem could simply be avoided through the implementation of a button, like you suggested as a possibility.

My main issue with a time delay is it wouldn't be possible to pull the stick all the way back to it's maximum normal position for any length of time before you get forced into pulling harder. I don't want to bleed off any more airspeed than I intend to in a dogfight.

I think the autopilot disconnect paddle is a nice choice to use as a button to go to the max input on the stick (as it's not used during that part of the flight)

Is it possible to implement that ?

I hope the ordnance will fall off before the wings. :-)

Zeus, would you guys consider a refueling video? I know it's a dry topic to say the least, but it would be easy and help satiate my appetite for a few days :)
