I read the link. If you are referring to the Oculus moderators as the unofficial team response, well, it seems 2 of them had already scratched their lenses and were as confused as many about cleaning. Oculus doesn't recommend using any liquid or chemical cleaners on the lenses https://support.oculus.com/help/oculus/483957785140290/ There may well be good poly-carb friendly cleaners that one can get away with but if they contain any alcohol, I personally would avoid them. I think their concern with liquid cleaners goes to concern for the electronics, as well. Chivas Posted July 31, 2016 Posted July 31, 2016 Oculus uses a custom combination of regular and Fresnel lenses, that may have been made from a completely different material than the Vive Fresnel lenses, so using the same technic for cleaning, could be a mistake.

hansangb Posted July 31, 2016 Posted July 31, 2016 I'd chalk it up to overly cautious advice. Or super-Secret-double-probation formula for the lens and you can't use cleaning solution. Maybe they coated it with a material they don't want you to rub off. No matter the material of the lenses, they could also have chemical coatings as well which could be the cause of the 'no liquid cleaner' recommendations. Either way, going against the manufacturers advice, on a $600 piece of equipment seems like a poor choice and a good way to void any warranty as well. TomCatMucDe Posted August 4, 2016 Posted August 4, 2016 (edited) hello fellow simmers, I wanted to give my feedback about Rift vs Vive to those who are about to purchase one. I am writing from work and I was really keen to give you my opinion about both VR headset. I will keep it very short: First I am not a fan boy of any. In fact if I sit on the computer to play I fly only DCS, before DCS I was never interested in VR and I am a late adopter. I bought a Vive back in June, in germany it costs around 950€, that's more than 1100$. I didn't care about space usage but I still went for it as I don't want to wait to be delivered when I order. I was slightly disappointed by the DCS experience. I have a very good setup: i7 6700K, GTX 1080, 32 Gb RAM. I had without VR very solid 120 FPS and even more. With the Vive I was getting at best 45 FPS at high altitude only. But that wasn't the worst, I was very disappointed by the resolution. I simply couldnt read the gauges. I assumed that it was simply the VR technology as of today so I decided to live with it. What made me lose it, was the weight of the headset. I simply couldnt play as long as I used to with TrackIR. I quickly got uncomfortable with the weight and of the thick cable coming out of it, add to it audio headset. Once the Oculus became available and because I ONLY play sitting I decided to sell my Vive with a loss at 750€ and bought the Oculus for roughly the same price. Jumping from one to the other was in DCS was like day and night for me. The headset is a lot more comfortable after 30 min flying, I was getting more than 60 FPS most of the time, in cities 45! And most importantly I could read all the gauges! I believe that the lenses and software support in DCS are better in the Rift, but this doesnt matter to me. I just care about the user experience and the Rift I have a true VR experience in DCS. I wont fly without it anymore, and I dont regret a second exchanging the Vive for the Rift. These are my 2 cents, I hope it will help any potential buyer who would mainly use the headset in DCS. have a nice day. PS: I posted the same in the Vive thread. Edited August 4, 2016 by TomCatMucDe
Johnny Dioxin Posted August 4, 2016 Posted August 4, 2016 Last night I flew an op in the Su-25, mostly just to see if my new VAC voice command profile was working okay. It was - and the experience was just so fantastic, I was reluctant to take the headset off and finish flying - the reason I did so was, as always, the heat. We're going through an extended warm and sticky (humid) spell in the UK, and wearing the Rift is often made very uncomfortable purely due to the extra heat it puts on my head. Such a shame, because watching those rockets fly from their life-like pods under the wings, and indeed the whole targeting and blowing-up-stuff experience was jaw-dropping. NeilWillis Posted August 5, 2016 Posted August 5, 2016 Yes, I too have taken to using a fan. One question though - is there a way to rig the fan so it only comes on when the cockpit is open? I think it'd add another layer of reality to the sim. Of course, it'd need to be able to blow air past my ears at 100 MPH or more, so it might be a bit of a tall order! I guess we'd also need it to come on when we turn on the fan in the cockpit of the Mi-8 too. :music_whistling: :music_whistling:

j0nx Posted August 5, 2016 Posted August 5, 2016 Haven't tried updating myself. Every release lately gets worse as far as performance and bugs so I stopped updating about a month ago once I got the one build that integrated the new VR features into 1.5 into something where most things were working again. He used MSI Afterburner (or similar) to lock the speed. And as I recall, it was the home screen of Oculus that was causing it.
