I've been a trackIR user for many years and always hated the way very small head movements were handled so I added a small "dead zone" to the center of all my trackIR axis' so I'd be able to scratch my nose without the view changing. I thought this would be a more natural look as the screen wasn't jumping around with very small head movements. Lately I've seen many videos created with VR headsets and I can see the rapid and small view changes with small head movements, something I really dislike.

So, my question is: Is there a way to add a small center null zone to the VR headset experience?

You dont notice it, cause you are following the image. Its those that are watching that image outside VR, that get fast paced movement. I was nervous about that too, and when I tried a VR headset the first time, I didnt notice anything of the kind.

So scratch away :)

It feels natural, it is like asking for adding dead zone to your head in real life :)

VR is nothing like TrackIR. The movement is 100% natural as it's your own head movement 1:1. This is like saying you're annoyed by your head moving in real life and you want a deadzone for that :D

Like the others have said, it's not an issue.

Believe us, with a VR HMD you'll never have the wish of adding a "dead zone". The amazing thing of todays low latency VR HDMs is exactly, that the cockpit struts SEEM so absolutely rock steady, whether you move or turn your head fast or slow, or keep it steady. The first thing that I noticed and wrote about when I got my DK1 (how long is that ago?) was, that its head tracking was WAY BETTER than the IR5. The button on my HOTAS which I had used to recentre the IR had probably been the most pressed button! Now I recentre right after game start and seldom need to repeat, even in very long sessions! The IR is as much rubbish as it is overpriced. I didn't dare to resell it and just threw it into tech recycling!

Agree with the others, you won't notice it. Just like RL your eyes will act as natural shock absorbers for small movement

Thanks guys! Your comments are much appreciated! I won't worry about this issue now, when it comes time to make the change to VR.

I'm just not ready to go VR yet. There's still the problem of using my button boxes, Thrustmaster MFD's, Saitek levers, desktop cheatsheets, etc. not to mention the infancy of the technology and the currently available resolutions. I've too much invested in these touchable/visual devices and too much software that is not fully mouse clickable. I'm enjoying my ultra wide monitor and it will have to get me by until VR evolves enough for me to jump in.

I will say this, if you have your controls in the same place every time you fly, muscle memory kicks in and I can use my mfds, wth hotas, g13, attached mouse even kb all without looking at them, my hands knows where they are. Granted for kb a sneak peek is needed occasionally. but really with VA and same location controllers it is no prob in VR. Sure taking/reading notes might be an issue.

Actually I am investing for some boxes with knobs and switches currently, they work like a charm in vr by muscle memory and touching and especially for left panel you can operate them without having to release the stick for the mouse.

Reading and writing is not an issue, there is a gap for yoir nose and you can peak trough it just enough so you can read something. I commonly write jtac 9 lines in a notebook.

Anyway if you want to wait wait but don't try vr then or I doubt you will be able to wait :) whatever monitor just doesn't compare.

Once you go VR, You will not go back to a 2D screen or start a game that isn't VR. I got my Vive over a month ago and have yet to run ROF, BOS CLOD or '46. I just stay with DCS for the VR. Its that good.

Agreed, I am doing the same with the Rift. VR only for me now.

As everyone has indicated your head movements seem very natural so don't worry about that aspect. I guess when the technology matures not only will VR track your head (view) movements it will also track your hands and fingers so you can actuate virtual switches and dials. And then maybe even tactile feedback.

Control is an illusion which usually shatters at the least expected moment.

Gazelle Mini-gun version is endorphins with rotors. See above.

Currently rolling with a Asus Z390 Prime, 9600K, 32GB RAM, SSD, 2080Ti and Windows 10Pro, Rift CV1. bu0836x and Scratch Built Pedals, Collective and Cyclic.

I can't wait for this. Though I'm certain this will take a few more years. I hope that down the road you will actually see the pilot body moving like it's your own, each finger moving individually and the hands gripping the controls when you grip them.

Winston 60 ,

I am a 70 year old flight bum – I used to think that my(2D) 3-screen + Track IR5 set up, was as close as I could ever come to flying in reality. I was dead wrong! A great technology change has ocurred with the introduction of VR headsets.

I hesitated to buy my Rift CV1 for quite some time, but 2 months ago I could not hold back anymore. I did not know what to expect, but already during the installation of the Oculus soft, I understood that this is going to be something else, when, during the last part of the set-up, I was overrun by a T-Rex!(A demo)

My first impression: This is a marvelous 360 degr. 3D experience!

My first flight sim experience: I am in the cockpit! and I want to repeat- You are in the cockpit!

I started my quick mission M2000C on the runway for a free flight. Involontarily my hands let go off my TM Warthog Hotas trying to reach the ”real” throttle and stick – That is how much I believed I was in the cockpit. This behaviour also was repeated during the flight(almost crashed as a consequence). The flight experience is so damned realistic, it can only meet competition by RL-flying.

Sure you can complain about the resolution, but it is good enough to have an extraordinary experience in virtual real life flying. It is hard to describe with words how good the VR headsets are, but I sincerely think that you are not doing yourself a favour by waiting to invest in one.

My experience exactly, the immersion of actually being in that cockpit looking at life size instruments and a whole world around you, far outweigh the graphics limitations.

I had initially planned on waiting for the next generation, and now am so glad I did not.

B I N G O ! ! Right now DCS is leading the charge with VR in all Combat flight Sims,I'm hoping to see more of our favorite titles coming to VR this Spring, but they're far behind.

Very true, it is hard/impossible to play others now. I so wish that RoF was in VR, it is just a prefect title for it. I love the WW1 perioid. And current VR capabilities would not be a hindrance at all due to the close combat required. BoS and CLoD will be getting VR in a few months so that is gonna be a nice alt to go to once out.
