Guys just wondering how to go about uploading audio files to DCS mission editor? Is there a special recording program you guys use, and anything I need to be aware of when doing this or should I just simply record, and then upload the file in the mission editor as I would a photo? Reason I ask is because I think I recall hearing you have to do something like compress the files before uploading them but am not reeally sure what this means I have to do.

Many thanks

Audio files are automatically attached to the mission when you select it for a sound related trigger.

The audio codec used can have an impact by increasing the mission file size substantially. I downloaded a 10mb mission recently where most of that space was taken up in a single audio file that was hardly compressed. For the sake of testing I compressed that one file down to 700 kb. Like Paganus suggested Audacity is a great tool to create and save audio files. I prefer the codec GSM 6.10 in the .wav format. It tends to be just a little bit smaller overall for audio files, but ogg is also ok.

The right man in the wrong place makes all the difference in the world.

I got Audacity so I should just record them, convert them 'Ogg vorbis' files and then upload them to DCS from there right?

Yup. Once I had a mission that played "background music". The .miz file was 20 mb lol... It took some courage to download that mission in mp :-)

Ensure you follow the advice of Grimes :-)

Really I just want in game messages to have voice audio as well as text to bring the missions alive more.

You can get away with very low audio exporting quality, especially if you're simulating a radio effect-- 3 or 4 on the Audacity .ogg quality slider made the files nice and small, without excessive compression artifacts.

Yeah true the quality neednt be great because I will include text. The main thing is added realism and atmosphere. How do you guys do your own voice acting?

I'm flying as the russians you see, and not really that keen on the idea of a silly russian impersonation. I might just have to go camp and corny and wear the fact I am not taking myself seriously on my sleeve.

I was thinking about having my controller announce he was speaking English to confuse any listeners 'and with your English experience studing at Oxford Ivan we'll' ...but quickly dismissed the idea as ridiculous!

Still linguistically inaccurate voice acting is better than no voice acting!

Hey guys, I'm having an issue changing audio files within the mission editor. I initally threw in come audio files for radio messages on certain triggers. They all worked fine, but later I went back and made some custom audio files using audacity, in wav format. I went into mission editor and changed the sound files for these triggers, but they wont change in the mission, it still uses the original files. I tried deleting the "play sound to coalition" trigger, saving, exiting DCS, then coming back in and adding the new sound, but it still plays the old sound. I even tried changing the trigger to "play sound to country" but it still plays that original sound. I went into the miz file, and the sound I'm trying to use is correct, and file names all look fine.

Do I have to delete the entire trigger event when I change the sound file?

Any suggestions?

I actually did just that. I recorded a whole new file, as an ogg. Went into the mission editor, and deleted the old sound trigger, saved mission, then added the new sound trigger using the ogg file. Still plays a completely unrelated sound file on trigger. This is so frustrating!

Just use a free text to speech software from the internet.

You have to change all the file name to a new file name too.

Hi moespeeds you can either delete the existing audio file trigger, then close the mission editor, and re-open and reload the mission in order to "clear" the existing file, or as hoochiekoo has suggested use a different filename.

Depending on what kind of quantity you're dealing with, one may be less time consuming than the other.

I did get it working by changing the file names. Thank you guys. For future reference, what is the audio file trigger? I'm a noob here.

Also, any suggestions for a good radio voice sound editor? My radio messages are super cheesy.

Audio file trigger can be used any event that occur any time such as when unit dead, unit speed higher than ..., group damage or use flag to trigger a sound file and much more even set time to play sound after mission start by any minute you want.

So I've been messing with the Mission Editor for a while and all of a sudden, I can't upload any files for sounds. Like, I click "Open" and it just doesn't do anything. Any idea how I can fix that?

Thanks in advance,

Sorry, I should have prefaced this with saying I've tried the DCS repair and still, the window will not populate for me to navigate to any files on my computer. I've read through the manual and I can't seem to find anything about troubleshooting that issue. Has anyone else had this issue?

Hey @M4tteo170!  This issue comes up every now and then, happened to me in the past.   For me it turned out that one of the sounds I had added was corrupt in some way.

What I ended up doing (and I don't know WHY this worked) was going through the mission and deleting the last few add sound triggers I had put into the mission.

Save the mission as a different file name, and then close the editor and then close DCS.

I then opened up the sounds that I had edited in a sound editor, and re-saved them as a different file name.

Restart DCS, open your new mission and start adding the re-saved sounds in.

I'm not saying this will work for you, or that all the above steps are necessary, but it worked for me in my situation.
